I looked at the wavefile for the UK Google Play Music version that I just downloaded (which incidentally was kinda a bitch to get working, it doesn't seem like an MP3 version is stored on my phone, and I had to download a copy on to Windows to actually see the file in a folder), it does seem to be an improvement on the American Itunes version, but it's still pretty loud, and there was some distortion during the last chorus. Would post an image but I'm having trouble getting that to work atm. Anybody have a Wavefile of the UK Itunes version for comparison?

SuperC: It's wonderful that you 'love' this song. But let me ask: if there any Prince songs that you do not like, please name 1 and a brief reason 'why'.

.

In doing so, you will understand how some of us may genuinely not dig 'The Breakdown' but are not egg suckers or compulsive fan-boys/girls, engaged in a war of negativity. Just sayin'....

[Edited 4/22/14 18:46pm]

First up, you make the wrong assumption that I don't understand how some people can dislike this song. That is not true. I have no problem whatsoever with you or anyone else not liking this song or any other song and explaining your reasons.

Secondly, I was making a general observation in response to the comment about the negativity on this site and my theory about where that could possibly be coming from.

In regards to your question: a song I deeply dislike is Chocolate Box, the chanting at the start, the overall sound is cold and annoying to my ears. BUT I would never say Prince should change this to that in the song or he should do this and that with the song. Or verbally abuse people who love it or say the song is shit and Prince has lost it.

Get it?

Do I 'get it'? Well hail yeah, I got it! We all deserve the chance to be heard and understood, thanks for the clarifier....

I really like this song. The beginning of the song reminds me of a song from Barry White's, 70s female group 'Love Unlimited' .I think the song I am referring to is 'Walking in the Rain'. The Breakdown has a Delfonics/Stylistics' vibe in parts of the song, especially with the high falsetto voice and the screams. Was very easy to purchase off of Amazon.

This one is surprisingly deep.

_

(My interpretation)

_

Prince is telling a story about a guy going through the motions of self-realization through breaking himself down.

_

"I keep breaking me down"

_

This continues until the final line of the second verse where the true issue appears "Give me back the time, U can keep the memories" The fear of death. The guy doesn't care about what he's learned as long as he can keep on living.

_

"U keep breaking me down"

_

God is literally breaking the man down with age and the man resents Him for it. The man doesn't want (and arguely never wanted) a relationship with God but it's the easy way out so he takes it. The man no longer has to learn from his past because God has it covered.

_

(I don't wanna, wanna, wanna go ... no, no, no, no, no!)

_

But the fear of death still lingers because he doesn't truly believe. And even when he's told that there's a door in the wall (death) he can walk through, he still refuses to learn.

_

"I don't care, it's cool as long as U catch me, baby
Catch me when I fall (If there's ever a fall)"

_

So the guy's in denial about the inevitability of his death and he doesn't have a true relationship with God.

_

Saddest story that's ever been told ya'll razz

tonight the stars are out
there's music in the air
the sounds of joy and celebration
are drowning out despair

Potential lyric fixes from page 1??

Listen 2 me closely as the story unfolds
This could be the saddest story ever been told
eye used 2 want the house with the biggest pool
Reminiscing now, eye just feel like a fool

U keep breaking me down, down, down
U keep breaking me down, down, down
Keep breaking me down, down, down
U keep breaking me down, down, down

eye used 2 throw the party every New Year's Eve
1st 1 intoxicated, last 1 2 leave
Waking up in places that U would never believe
Give me back the time, U can keep the memories

U keep breaking me down, down, down
U keep breaking me down, down, down
U keep breaking me down, down, down
U keep breaking me down, down, down

Every book eye read said that eye would meet somebody like U
Whenever eye was sorry, so sorry 4 the things eye used 2 do
A journal full of notes eye used 2 go thru ... 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
All behind me now all because of U!

U keep breaking me down, down, down
(U keep breaking me, U keep breaking me down!)
U keep breaking me down, down, down
(eye don't wanna, wanna, wanna go ... no, no, no, no, no!)
U keep breaking me down, down, down
(Don't wanna go down, down, down, down, down)

(Down, down, down) (repeat)

Baby, baby
See, there's a door that U can walk through where there used 2 be a wall
eye don't care, it's cool as long as U catch me, baby
Catch me when eye fall (If there's ever a fall)

Closer 2 the breakdown
Closer we get 2
Closer we get 2
Closer we get 2
Closer we get 2 the breakdown

"That's when stars collide. When there's space for what u want, and ur heart is open wide."

meh....I'm not feeling this song at all! I am digging his sound (hard rock/grunge) music he's making with 3rdeyegirl, but this whinny sounding ballet, just don't cut it. At least in my humble opinion.

Further confirmation of why I don't ever read lyrics. Prince, you're 53/4, is this really all you can manage? Not exactly bringing me inspiration or challenging the way I see the world. Thank god you can wail wink

I do like the song and agree with some others that the lyrics are actually depper than you think if you actually listen to them in the context of regret and not wanting to lose valuable time in your life doing things that have no real meaning.

The only objection I have is this song really needs a soaring guitar solo to put it over the top and make it a true classic. Not sure what the thinking was in keeping the music somewhat sparse through the whole song.

Oh well - it is still a good song smile

Hey, dunno if anyone saw but this has been posted by 3rdeye - saying its the 'official' video, but tagged with FAN GENERATED - 3rdeye link to here, but obviously mods please snip me if this isn't allowed here.

http://www.soulhead.com/2014/04/25/prince-breakdown-official-video-3rdeyegirl/

Looks like a longer version of the snippet of de niro that was earlier up with other films too. Actually, looking again looks like its been on 3rdeye twitter for over 12 hours now and I've only just noticed. Feel free to sue the messenger!

Believe me I get the lyrics. A good lyricist he is not. Anyone thinking otherwise is easily pleased. And I happen to think omitting 'another' searing guitar solo is to the benefit of the song. I mean, how many has he already done like that. Enough already. It's good though and I'd be happy with this on an album. Prefer to see a 3EG album though. Hurry up WB!

This "video": It's just a compilation of clips (not edited creatively) from movies with the lyrics stuck very roughly on top here and there... it's not very crafted. With shots with Robert Deniro, Barbara Streisand, Robert Redford... and shots from "The Notebook"????

lol

It's might get copyright slammed offline for those clips, since it's selling something and not art (selling the single).

Really? lol I love the 'one-click' process of buying music from Amazon. It's so easy. Downloading the music to my computer after the purchase takes less than 3 seconds. Works for me.

Itunes gave me a headache when I tried to purchase it from there first, so I gave up and waited to see if the song would show up on Amazon. Amazon works for me for buying music anytime. I didn't realize I had a $1.00 credit on Amazon for purchasing something else at an earlier date, so I was only charged .31 for the song. I like the song. Has a Delfonics/Stylistics/Love Unlimited ballad vibe. The screams are awesome, as it adds more emotion to the song and works perfectly with the humble vibe of the song. Prince's falsetto voice is on the money on this track. Good job I say. smile thumbs up!

I hope Prince isn't gonna have a bunch of songs like this on his new album. He was on to a real good thing with his Rock/Grunge style music, he was making with 3rdEyeGirl. I tried my best to like this song..but I can't stand it! That whole star wars lazer sound effects in the background sounds ridiculous. I give "The Breakdown" the Thumbs Down!
