I admit the mix is bad but I think some are going way overboard here saying this is the worst ever. Hell listen to the end of Let's Go Crazy, Cybersingle, even Screwdriver. (Screwdriver from the Purple Music site sounded far better imo) Don't even get me going on Live Out Loud which has got to be the absolute worst mixed/mastered song of his I've heard to this day. Shit probably sounds fine on whatever he's playing it through though. lol

Where's good old Bernie Grundman when you need him? I think Lovesexy was the last Prince project Bernie was a part of.

People like Grundman are not needed when the only engineering skill needed today is to be able to turn a knob or sound level button as far as it will go.

V10LETBLUES

It's a nice song, but mastering is the least of it's troubles. Prince really does need a producer to bounce ideas off of. The song itself is nice, but the execution could be far better, and like I said, mastering is wayyyyyy down on the list of it's recording deficiencies.

I'm convinced nothing is wrong with the track. I played it through some high end stereo systems, mp3 players and with headphones. It is bass heavy but with headphones it sounds ace. I don't believe its the demo version.
With all these gadgets with tiny speakers you need to get compression right. This track sounds huge with headphones.
It likely will sound good on radio, they use heavy multi band compression so nothing sounds wonky, so DJs do very little mix on fly. Good and bad. I've seen indie bands compress the hell out of recordings knowing they will be mainly played on laptop and tablets, but I don't think that's the case here.
What are you outraged about today? CNN has not told you yet?

That's why I'm not into remasters, most are just louder and tricks your mind into thinking you are hearing things that were not there. But the unreleased and new music should be fun.

Oh Prince fans can be so anal retentive, it's like being with a bunch of virgin nuns in Tijuana. Like there's never been a good Prince song with a bit of a compression problem.

This song is great -- so is Fallinginlovetonite by the way. It's not the best he ever wrote? Wake up, it's competing against hundreds of songs he wrote, some of the most sonically iconic of our era. It's like if people had been waiting for Picasso to top Guernica or Michelangelo the Sistine Chapel murals. Prince is custodian of his vision of many of our musical idioms, and his recent output shows him to be in full control of his talents.

He's been pedestrian and phoning it in for too long, no question, but he's also been in an extreme musical purgatory, a contractual alien to his own seminal creations. He did make many mistakes, but you have to acknowledge its painful for any artist to find oneself divorced from one's own higly original and personal art.

You can find flaws as a fan and feel he could have done a little better with this and that, but in the end, as an artist, he's creating what he wants to create just fine with the assistance he wants to get, and he's positioned to be remembered by history as one of the greatest musical prodigy that ever lived.

This is especially true following yesterday's Warner deal, which opens the door to a renewed appreciation for Prince's talent and contribution, given that there is a possibility of documenting almost superhuman feats of creativity and mastery, solely focusing on his golden period.

The rest, what has been issued since he left the label, will in time be rediscovered -- at least the best of it.

[Edited 4/19/14 18:25pm]

You can accuse us of being analy retentive but it doesn't change facts. Yes The Breakdown is a great song, but so is everything on Purple Rain. If PR gets a remaster in the manner of The Breakdown, (or any recent release), it will end up sounding worse than the original release.

Prince once claimed that digital music hurt his ears, saying it was all numbers. Maybe if he looked into what those numbers represented then he would get the music released properly and it wouldn't hurt the ears of anyone.

The fact is, we shouldn't even be having the opportunity to be discussing the mastering, it should just be done properly then we wouldn't have to tarnish a thread about a great song.

If there is anyway we can get .pr to sound as crisp clear as crystal ball did Im there for it

Yeah...to someone like me who still has all her original (great sounding) vinyl, it's hard to imagine a re-master bringing anything new to the table.

Really??? Empty Room is a bonafide classic in my humble opinion, The Breakdown is mediocre at best for me.

If there has been a classic released since 2010, this would be it. I love it.

Lots of remasters bring out stuff it's hard to hear in he originals. The remastered hits for Prince sound definitely better than even my vinyl. Really depends on who handles doing it.

Although the song is STILL not available overseas,

i just heard it on the german radio station HR1 and the DJ credited to "Prince & 3rdeyegirl".

So, the push is there.

They never played any other newer music from Prince in a loooooooong time.

Prost!

As far as i can tell from their online playlist, it was played from cd as they only list songs from their digital library.

Promos are out! (and i can't really be a judge, but the radio transmission sounded better than the stream)

i'm curious, for those people who say this is, for them, the best prince song in 5 years

or even 10 years - what did you think of "Future Soul Song"?

/

i'm asking because the one reminds me a bit of the other, and i like both of them lots.

but "Future Soul Song" has the edge for me, there's just so much going on.

/

perhaps that's why there's no guitar solo at the end of The Breakdown, because it'd

be too much like Future Soul Song with a guitar thrown in there.

I wouldnt say its the best anything in 10 years, its a good ballad, heavy theme,etc...but i dont feel to attached to it, I liked "Future Soul Song" much better, this reminds me too much of "The Dance" at times. I know people feel its nitpicking at the "mixing" or sound, and its not even that, if this was anyone i would be saying it was not a great mix, its beginning is very "Bootleg" sounding, its not even the distortion because nowadays everyone is too loud in the mix, thats a known fact, and the compression these tracks go through makes them sound worse, but thats my overall opinion on digital and mp3s, which all are a step down in sound majorly. But again, its a song, plain and simple, i cant really get amped on singles, i'm not a "singles" type person, i hate this "dropping" 4-5 singles before an album is even out, i have singles i bought i just totally forgot i had, (another downfall of digital) its very forgettable. When there is a FULL album i can get anxious

future soul song was a great idea ruined by a dumb chorus .. the breakdown at very least has nothing dumb about it .. well maybe the lazers and brickwalling .. but lyrically .. it is relatable .. future soul song has some ok lyrics but mostly cartoonish and a chorus that means absolutely nothing and simply states "this is the future soul song" .. it's about as relatable as "if i came back as a dolphin" .. the listener is just left with empty words that mean nothing .. dolphin has great verses and a poop chorus .. future soul song has ok lyrics great oo ee oos and a shit chorus .. the breakdown could be better but it has no pure stinky parts like these other 2 songs mentioned

i agree with you completely on the 'singles' thing. that's what i'm so glad about with this new

relationship between him and warners, finally we'll get a whole album.

last year was cool enough and there was a lot of music, but it's just songs, eventhough you

can compile your own album from them, it's not the same experience.

nothing beats putting a new prince album in your stereo and just listening to it beginning to

end and soak it all in.

i've only listened to "The Breakdown" 4 times and now i'm not going to touch it anymore up

until the album is released. knowing too many songs or knowing 1 or 2 songs far too well

before you hear the album as a whole is not enjoyable for me.

and these days it gets worse and worse with some people having more than half their album

out there before it's finally released.

there's pre-releases, pre-singles, singles, promotional clips, teasers etc etc. it's all too much lol

hmm, interesting. and i do understand exactly what you mean, but i'm the opposite i guess,

as soon as songs become too relatable or totally non-abstract all the way through, i sort of

lose interest. unless you're joni mitchell biggrin

for example, the chorus of Dolphin sounds great to me and it's in my top 5 prince songs of

all time. it's a bit of a clunky metaphor, but i really like the sentiment.

but the chorus of Future Soul Song is indeed rather simplistic. i like the harmonies but the

chorus in this case really doesn't make any sense, you're right. but somehow, i like the

song and it's sound enough not to care in this case.

Some of the newer remasters I've heard I like and have some hope, technology is on our side at this point, thats why unlike Bart - I'm glad this is the first go round. But like people are saying though with the "loudness war" a lot of them turn out to be a disappointment. What I find is they crank everything to 11 and music is not as dynamic. Sure your ears are hearing things that you haven't heard before but likely if they were in the original mix and you took time to train ear to listen you would hear them.

Of course with the deluxe editions, I hope for plently of studio material from the Vault. Can't go wrong with new music. Look more forward to that then remaster of his old music.

You see I have little faith in WB when it comes to remasters. The idea that Prince controls his masters, I hope like hell he farms them out to MFSL at some point. I would be interested to hear what MFSL would do with some remastering. HdTracks - more interested in hearing things in better quality as originally intended.

I would also be interested in hearing all these rerecordings that Prince did when he was angry at WB. Some may be enjoyable but from a historical standpoint I hope they see light of day if not for just hardcores.

'The Breakdown': Not feeling this one. 'Groovy Potential' remains my favorite 'most recent release'. I can't listen to this one consistently; the bridge, where he speaks of "every book I read....." just doesn't work for me.

The org is weird.

.

Before I even heard this song but learned about it through all the hype, I KNEW it had to be a ballad. I knew it wasn't funky. i knew it did not rock. I was not wrong. Ballads are the only songs orgers seem to get fired up about.

.

I listened to it. It's no great shakes, but then again, I don't care much for the slow stuff.

.

It sounds like the spiritual extension of "Empty Room" (which I'm also nuetral about and never understood the hype/love).

Orgers are being to critical of this stuff! If you enjoy it (I certainly do!), then enjoy it! If you want to bash it as crap with "horrible" mastering, learn how to mix, drive yo ass up to Paisley and you tell Prince that you can master it better than anyone else! I mean, sure, we all must have better song-writing credentials than PRince himself, whose career has spanned decades! Some of the stuff he has put out hasn't been entirely good, but give the guy a break! Pessimism is incurable on here sometimes, I swear XD

-PS, sorry for my pessimisn wink
