So what's the ideal fantasy track list for Purple Rain 2014 re-issue?

Anybody got any fantasy tracklistings in their heads? Besides me.

I feel like it needs to be 3 discs to do it full justice. The sountrack should have included the songs by The Time and Dez and Appolinia 6, as well as the God instrumental. Those are the most obvious inclusions for a deluxe reissue. Then there are the B-Sides and extended versions from the era, like 17 Days and Another Lonely Christmas....

But we know there are longer versions of Computer Blue, The Beautiful Ones, Take Me With U. There's the fantastic raw First Ave performances of some of these tracks that ended up being overdubbed and used for the Purple Rain vocal, and I think Baby I'm A Star and I Would Die 4 U. That whole performance (Wendy's 1st with the Revolution) would be an AWESOME addition, with remastered sound. (I wonder if a 30th Anniversary DVD set is also coming... with unreleased footage...the barn scene )

Right there would be a full alternate Purple Rain album. (There's no way we will get all the different versions of Computer Blue...)

Of course the fantasy is that there could be any real surprises! A song or two that none of us, nor any bootlegger, has ever heard of.

i'd like to get some of the side-project tracks w/ his vocals from around this time period. And there are undoubtedly tons of things we know nothing about that have never circulated.

While I love the suggested triple I very much doubt there will be any tracks not written by Prince... so Modernaire by Dez will definitely not be on there.

Apollonia 6 and The Time *could* be on there as Prince wrote them BUT he would likely need to pay them performance royalties so again not sure they will be.

I would think it more likely we get 2 discs, first Purple Rain (original 9 track album remastered) and disk 2 with b sides and (hopefully) original/long versions such as Computer Blue.

'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.

A truly comprehensive deluxe box-set with a satisfactory level of previously unreleased material would need 8 CD's and 2 DVD's and would have to include the following, but unfortunaletly I don't think it's gonna be THAT comprehensive (more like 2/3 CD's).

Everything related to Ice Cream Castles and Apollonia 6 would need to be released alongside these albums' own remasters, not here (including Prince's vocal versions of the songs), and as for Modernaire neither Prince nor WB own the masters for that one and it has little business being here anyway, but a licencing deal with Dez could certainly be done and the song could be added here on on Ice Cream Castle as a special gift to the fans.

No.

What they COULD do, though, since it's unlikely they'll release all the edits and shit on physical format, is make a 2/3 CD set with the main maxis/b-sides/outtakes and a DVD of Syracuse sold separately, and offer a much more comprehensive digital (lossless) version with all the tracks and videos on my list above.

I'd be surprised if associated artists made an appearance anywhere on this package. There'll probably be two or three different releases though. That's pretty typical on this type of release. Outtakes, demos, extended versions and possibly video being only on the limited deluxe box set.

.

The bog standard release will probably just be the normal album with a few era-related unreleased tracks on disc 2 or even just tacked on to the end of the solitary CD. Which is possible.

Prince being Prince I'm pretty sure the deal covers the side-projects as well: he won't let go of them so easily, but I wonder whether the remaqters of those will be released much later or alongside the corresponding P albums. I'm quite sure remasters of ICC, A6 and TGL would benefit from the hype generated by a PR remaster if released at the same time.

Am I the only one not horrified by the idea of having a longer version of "Computer Blue" just included on the remastered album itself? Doesn't have to be the 12-minute version, but the additional verse and some of the guitar parts from the latter half would be nice.

It WILL be there (most likely the "short" long version from the pre-final PR config but if we get lucky maybe even a longer one)

Sorry Databank, what you propse will never ever see the light of day.
No one will be interested in such a big 8 or ten cd/dvd package. And certainly not the majority of the buyers/public, will ever pay so much for a package so big.

Don't forget, the package will be a perfect deal between the ones who still remember Prince and Purple Rain (older people/fgans with money), and some extras for the fans (old time fool fans like me, with money wink). Not too much, but just enough.

I hope the artwork will get some extra attention, and won't be fucked up too much up to Prince's contemporary likenings. Since I think the one we know for 30 years is timeless.

And I do hope there will be a vinyl rerelease, of which I'm pretty sure will be pruple vinyl again, including a poster. wink))

So two more months, right ? Well, they have the time, and Warners have the skills and machines to get everthing printed and ready for shipping worldwide. biggrin

I'm looking forward to the first commercials and ads in big magazines worldwide. I hope they will put up a great campaigne for this one. It's Prince's very last chance. smile

What I meant is that I would be fine with the already released version of "Computer Blue" on the original PR album being replaced with a longer version on the PR remastered version. Not just a longer version included as a bonus track on CD2, or something like that.

The WB deal also means that Prince can also now release ANYTHING that's in the vault from the WB years, studio or live, as he wishes. So now a question remains: should/will these remasters contain only the album and one or 2 CD's of b-sides/ext mixes with a few outtakes and will Prince keep the vast majority of his outtakes for compilations or thematic archive albums à la Crystal Ball/The Vault... Old Friends 4 Sale, or will the remasters be associated with at least one, or maybe 2 full CD's of unreleased alternates and outtakes?

We also don't know what him and WB have in mind: each remaster being only a 2-CD set with the strict minimum of extra material or the general consumer getting a 1 CD remaster of the album as it was with maybe a couple extras at the end of the CD, and fans and music afficionados getting a limited edition boxset that's as comprehensive as can be?

that's what i'm thinking too. perhaps 1 track we've never heard before.

and that's fine with me. it doesn't have to be a 6 disc package for me,

which seems highly unlikely anyway. 2 discs is probably right with at

the utmost a special deluxe edition with a dvd of a concert.

Well, the original PR album is out there and still available in the stores. Some re-releases have differed greatly from the originals. Given that the length of the PR album was edited down simply due to the limitations of the physical format then I'm not so horrified by the thought of some of the orignal tracks being included as longer versions. "Computer Blue" suffers the most from that and I think its length on the record was quite likely a compromise. The unedited version of "The Beautiful Ones" I can live without as it really benefits from the edit.
