Has Prince lost his mojo?

It just seems like he doesnt care anymore. The song sounds lazy and kinda boring.

The track is a demo. Prince sounding lazy is another matter. I'm guessing the lyrics were in free form and the music was impromptu. There is no way a 7 time Grammy Award, Academy Award and Golden Globe winner "forgot how to write a song".

I like the song. Feels very Prince as Prince.

Lyrics puzzles always are my favorite

And I did not interpret as having a go at lesbians at all.

hmmm hmmm

Does he really mean a girl, or a guy who looks like a girl???

And bearded girl reminded me of a girl who pretends to be girlfriend in order to cover up that mister is afraid to come out of the closet as gay.

Doe he mean dirty in a good way, like getting all sweaty and licking eachother everywhere and satisfying every body part that exist?

Or does he mean something ordain as the dirty world of mordern politics?

The bourgeoisie is the upper class being all content with themselves whilst leeching of the poor and middle class.

And yes he feels betrayed, but is it a romantic betrayel of is it the governmental betrayel that is dissapointing?

You know, the democrats or the republicans are all the samen, politicians getting rich at the cost of the people's health. It's just another puppet with a different wig in the administration.

Who is this song about?

For who did he write this song?

hmmm ...yeah i dont know. Interesting interpretation.

wasnt crazy about this at first but a few spins has me feeling it..

as for the lifestyle/dirty world i just had a thought: prince's shit has always been about veiled meanings..how can i present this sly enough that you can read me more than one way? the man gets his rocks off watching people figure him out.. (like really, whats new about this?)

at first i heard it as a lesbian dig (like most i guess) but then again, we're primed to take offense at damn near anything these days - especially when it comes to the LGBT community..and yet..prince may, still, be more clever than we give him credit for

the "a man is only good for a rainy day" bit does seem like a nod in one direction, but he could also be using "a man" in the same sense as your man or "a partner in a monogamous relationship" (which would have to be a man in this context cuz the betrayed party is prince.)

ie: a man(see: official partner) is only good in the mean time-inbetween time >>> what does having a man to you mean if you stay steppin out (bisexual or not)?

it's about loyalty if you ask me but..however you cut it we'll never know and prince likes it that way..its really standard fare

that being said..prince needs a band that pushes him again...hearing this i think of the kiss demo - this is far more interesting in my opinion (especially the turn around at G) but imagine what would happen if it were punched up by the right team (or if he was forced to punch it up after hearing it through anothers ears - ala mazarati).. at its root its a solid prince song..skilled, deceptively simple, funky, and a bit odd...with the right production value the naysaying would be drowned out...

if you or one of your team reads this P, we get it bruh..the girls are good at taking orders..but you need someone to challange that ass...bootsy took james to another level if you ask me brother.

It would seem reasonable to give him the benefit of the doubt, so to speak, except for the fact that this is not the first time that he has made homophobic remarks. True, last time he sort of explained them away without apologizing or taking them back, but still.

During my morning commute today on 97.3 here in the Bay Area they have a segment called new music tuesday where they play a snippet of tunes & one of them was this joint.

They all loved it & called it really funky. One of the DJ's Vinne said after a a few bass lines "That's it, I'm all in."

too exhausting.. he doesnt like gay people.. FINE..

i dont like religious idiots who think its OK to condemn other people.

He's DEFINATELY pushin' buttons!

This is exactly the kind of response i was waiting for after pages of reading this thread.

It's controversy.

He did it with the masses before, they just weren't necessarily hardcore fans...

Homophobia is slowly being relegated the way of other prejudices before it particularly in more cecular countries but even in the U.S, state after state is recognising people's rights to love who they want. An international star should understand what's happening and realise that history will judge harshly those who aired such views just as surely as we now judge someone who felt validated in the 40s for banning Jews from country clubs, Irish from bars or blacks from just about anywhere. I'm all for the belief that political correctness has gone too far but Prince crossed a line today for me. This ain't polite society. Grow with it and be part of human betterment or be consigned to "relic" who's views require excuses to be made. "It was a different time!" These views are all the more distasteful to me when they come from someone who is of a community who has suffered such prejudice. I still love you Prince but I think I'll stay uptown and shan't be joining you in the suburbs. [Edited 11/18/13 9:59am]

Prince has earned the right to say whatever the fuck he wants. Let him abuse people in his lyrics, let him be ignorant, let him be sarcastic, let him have a dark sense of humour, let him be bitter, let him make fun of the weak! Boo-hoo.

If he were to talk like this in a serious discussion, we could get our panties in a twist. But the fact is, he's not a politician, he's a musician. And the great thing about being a musician is, you don't have to give a single fuck about what people think about you and about how people react to what you say.

The jam is funky, and I like it when Prince does a Clarkson and stirs up a bit of controversy. Brings a bit of colour into our boring, politically correct lives.

I hate that. He takes away the only thing left enjoyable about music. Theft. He's supposed to charge so that we can feel good about having got a way with something when we steal it. Its a major part of today's listening experience.

I can't see what's all the fuss about. It's a demo, so it has a rough sound, which I don't dislike, but anyway.

The story is simple: a man is angry to a girl who made him believe she wanted him, and instead is cheating on him with other girl/s.

If she cheated with another guy, nobody would complain (and it would be nothing new, too).

What's interesting is I never heard a song in which Prince speaks about male homosexuality explicitly, while it's at least the second song about lesbians (Bambi being n.1).

Still it doesn't seem homophobic to me, a cheater is a cheater and yes lesbian sex can be dirty as much as eterosexual sex. Especially if you're cheating on someone. If he's calling his ex a "bearded woman" it's surely quite offensive, but he called someone "sexy motherfucker" and another one "irresistible bitch" so I can't say I'm surprised. razz

The title seems to hint we should think about it as metaphorical, though. WHich at the moment I'm absolutely unable to do, due to ill kids and sleepless nights, so I'll just enjoy the funk.

That's good shit!

Oh, shit! Am i allowed to say "shit"?

I think people have a problem with supposed homophobia based on his supposed problems with Wendy and Lisa over it. After he became a JW he has a history of trying impose his beliefs on others. If that didn't loom over his head, then I would say people were taking this too seriously too, but that is not the case. Like with anything, there is context.

New track, finally dancing jig. Saw this thread earlier before work and was like doh!. Busy day, so it flew by as I salivated. It's been on repeat for over an hour. Makes no sense. Love it. That guitar line is da spit. Dah neh, neh neh. Lyrics are high-larious. Fake as a christmas tree, bearded lady, fuck he is going on about? Had to have made this as a follow-up to Bambi in '82 nuts. Not feeling a homophobic vibe from it. That's not his style. He's just playing dirty, naive old man instead of young man like it's cousin. Fun as fuck! CHARLES! Not even worried about an album, if he drops more kooky stuff like this and Breakfast... by the time I get sick of this one lol. You go, sir!

I agree . Look at the amount of bitching here for a song that is free. You would think they did pay for it. And less than a dollar for a song is a great deal. I should know I keep going to Amazon & buy songs late at nite when I'm high.

Really dig this song. The lyrics are unique for Prince world. It reminds me a bit of how Bon Iver writes lyrics. Whatever words come out, come out....as long as the "sense" of the words carry the meaning and fits the music, then perfect!

-------

The song is free form without being too loose with a cool "Prince attitude". Listened to it about 7x today and LOVING IT.

-------

As far as any lesbophobic whatever....whatever. This song sounds much more about the PERSON who happens to be a lesbian, opposed to hating on lesbians.
