Princey has some 'splainin' to do.

this is some bullshit right here...

'dirty'? F*ck that!

you know whats dirty? being a brainwashed religious fool.

im done with this asshole. .im done.. 30 years of being a complete and utter DIE HARD.

but i just cannot give him any more excuses.. i cant do it..

i wouldnt do it for any other artist/politician.. but i made excuses for Prince... he is just pushing buttons, he doesnt really mean that, its a double-meaning can be interpreted differently.. blah blah..

too exhausting.. he doesnt like gay people.. FINE..

i dont like religious idiots who think its OK to condemn other people.

People pointing out the negative lesbian jabs have a point...The word "dirty" is the issue....

But as far as folks saying that this a horrible lyrical job, needs to get a clue...

This is a funk jam people...It's obvious that Prince was going for a humorous Bootsy like workout...

And yeah, the "dirty" knock aside there are some funny ass lines here....

I never thought I'd see the day when Prince fans lacked a sense of humor...

But other than that...Yeah, I can understand the more reasonable gripes...

This I kinda agree with, I like the funk and on the spot nature of the performance kinda like a softer cloreen bacon skin loose funk, the issue is some nasty judgmental lyrics that just ain't funny

I think it's prince that's having the humor failure here

It sounds like a demo. The lyrics are in free association form. The off the cuff adlibs is enough for me to believe it's a jam. For what it is, there's some funny lines and the G Major bridge is the best Bootsy Collins impression I've heard of Prince.

.

Great post, and I just found out that it is just a demo... another throw-away breezy nice little jam.

I have no problem with his story of being dissed by a Woman for another Woman, but these lyrics are just terrible... I don't think I've ever said that about P. I can dig simplicity when used creatively and/or intentionally, but these lyrics feel like jumbled combined lines thrown together... confused, with no cohesion.

.

Sorry, P. I usually champion your ideas as songs, and feel what you say/sing/play, but lately you just seem bored... or are you intentionally lowering everyone's expectations before releasing something you actually believe in?

it's funk.. Did James Brown have amazing lyrics?

Hwaaaiyy!!

But, yeah, the lyrics to this song definitely sound judgemental towards lesbians. I don't mind at all the free-flowing feel to the lyrics...as others have said, this is more of a free form jam a la Cloreen Baconskin. Musically it's pretty cool (you can't help but hear the Bootsy influence), vocally it's pretty interesting. Lyrically, it's a head scratcher. He'd have to come out and explain the lyrics to wash away the "I don't like women who like women" vibe emitting from them.

aplogizzzzerzzzz in full effect! Those lyrics are something I'd expect out of a 17 year old. Same with the concept as a whole.

Maybe it's his tribute to closet lesbian Whitney Houston?

"I saw you undercover like the CIA" sounds like he's calling out a closet case... If an out lesbian sang this song, it woud sound like someone calling out a hypocrite. A "beard" is when someone has a sham boyfriend or girlfriend to cover their true preference.

I don't know. it sounds like someone that spurned his affection, someone named Charles?

Didn't Peppermint Patty always call Charlie Brown "Charles"? Ok, I'm done trying to make sense of these lyrics.

"So fierce U look 2night, the brightest star pales 2 Ur sex..."

The trac is reminiscent, to me, of My Medallion. One of my closet faves. Silly, funny, funky. This one seems a bit better tho...and only a demo...nice.

Homophobia is slowly being relegated the way of other prejudices before it particularly in more cecular countries but even in the U.S, state after state is recognising people's rights to love who they want.

An international star should understand what's happening and realise that history will judge harshly those who aired such views just as surely as we now judge someone who felt validated in the 40s for banning Jews from country clubs, Irish from bars or blacks from just about anywhere.

I'm all for the belief that political correctness has gone too far but Prince crossed a line today for me. This ain't polite society. Grow with it and be part of human betterment or be consigned to "relic" who's views require excuses to be made. "It was a different time!"

These views are all the more distasteful to me when they come from someone who is of a community who has suffered such prejudice.

I still love you Prince but I think I'll stay uptown and shan't be joining you in the suburbs.

A woman having sex with another woman = Dirty World.

rolleyes

Prince can, and has, done better with his lyrics. I like the sound but I could do without his
woman on woman commentary. Especially since so many same sex couples are fighting for equality
in the states.

So a woman who is with another woman is a "bearded lady" who's apart of a "dirty world?" What an ugly thing to say, not to mention homophobic. At least he can blame his Bambi lyrics on being young and naive. There's no excuse for someone in their 50's.

Also, has this guy completely forgotten how to turn a phrase, or were these lyrics made up on the spot? I refuse to believe he actually sat down to write this dreck.

Musically, it sounds like Prince in a hamster wheel listening to Mr. Big Stuff on repeat. Fail.

Is it possible that by "bearded lady," he meant that the lady was using him as her beard?

That's the way I read it. shrug

I have also heard of lesbians being called "bearded" as an insult. A woman eating a hairy pussy
gives her a stash/beard. I am not saying that is how Prince is using it, but that is another
way that I have heard it used.

It's like something is missing...his soul (inner feelings) is gone. When Prince use to sing it made me happy /I actually felt something. With each new song he releases that element is missing. It's like he's just releasing it just to shut his fans up-when he sings he's not even into it eek

Hmmm...

Haven't heard it yet because I'm not at home. Hopefully he won't pull it before I get a chance. Definitely agree that the lyrics are appalling. That last tweet said something about the title not being anything prejudicial... But the lyrics still are. Especially the part about the "dirty world." As for the bearded woman line... I dunno, a "beard" is a well known term meaning a man or woman that a gay/lesbian person uses to pretend they're straight. As in Nicole Kidman was Tom Cruise's beard. But it becomes more and more apparent that Prince feels my entire life is sinful and worth making fun of. I wouldn't put up with this from any other artist, so why him? Especially since his music of late is less than stellar. Oh yeah, it's because his once openly flamboyant fuck you attitude was part of what taught me to be okay with myself when I was a scared teenager. It's a shame he's now undoing all of that. sad
No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

When I first read about the song this morning I knew that by the time I got home and listened to it this evening the initially positive comments would be replaced by a series of negative ones. What I did not expect was that it would be to do with homophobic lyrics. How can he justify this? How can we justify this? Even if it is a demo, even if the lyrics are improvised, has he listened to them? And what's with the spitting noise? Even if he wasn't trying to be offensive, he should know better. And what about his people? Didn't anyone have the guts to tell him?

The good news is, as somebody said earlier, that we are bound to have some good music soon to compensate for the backlash that this is going to bring about, as I expect it to be on the main media channels in the next few hours.

Massive screw-up, mate...
