Is Prince basically "The Washed Up Singer" he talked about in "Face Down" because generally nobody gives a darn(damn) no more about Prince but the few straggly people he has left on prince.org

i think all of that is comparative. even at the hight of his fame prince only

had one album that sold stellar numbers. and even then he was regarded

by a whole bunch of people as a weird freak with horrible songs.

if anything prince's public image has changed somewhat for the better in

the last 10 years or so. he's toned down the theatrics and is more about

accessible music. sure, we on the org would love it more if he was still on

a streak of totally weird tripped out funk n rock, but those days seem to

be over.

that were prior only shared by people who did not like prince. his image

is more in tune with the common folk but his music is now regarded as a

years. there's a new generation out there who doesn't know or doesn't

still releasing albums off and on and only sometimes does one of those

albums get a lot of critical and consumer attention and then it's still at a

level nowhere near the numbers they shipped in the 80s.

that's hardly the profile of a 'washed up singer'. that's the profile of a true

artist who survived most of the pitfalls of fame and superstardom and who

carved out a niche for himself in the poprock pantheon where he seems to

be going strong and actually enjoying himself. even if some of the stuff he

is doing these days doesn't agree with us hardcore fans, it's at least nice

to see him still going after all this time and changing things up all the time.

and once in a while, we all know, half an album of stellar tracks come our

way.

Um not at your commercial peak does not mean washed up

When you can fill a stadium for 21 nights in one city (something he was unable to do in the same city in 1995 after a number 1 single), When you can still get the front cover of Rolling Stone and any number of magazines, When you can then you are far from washed up.

Now if your saying he's not as big as he was in 1984 - 92 then yeah sure he's records don't sell the same but washed up come on.

He's probably made more money out of the independent projects since 1996 than he did with WB

yes..he is a bit of a joke with the general public...but most of the general public think the x factor and rihanna are great music...ask fellow musicians or people who know a bit about music and he is one of the ten greatest acts of all time..

Well, hopefully not. I didn't like 20ten and, with some -but not many- exceptions, I don't like what I've heard in this "huge" 2013. But I still have hopes of listening to a great Prince album.

Washed up singer or stone washed fan?

I don't think Prince is looking at success the same way he used to do. Even as late as Rave, that was still his definition, but I guess in the meantime, he settled down on what makes him happy : playing live, having a good band and crying all the way to the bank.

I'm sure he cares more about his legacy than he lets on, but maybe not as much as the typical longtime fan. For him, it's probably not his problem if you're dying for a boxset. He wants you to come to his shows, and if you feel like buying his new music, go ahead... but dude/girl, come to the show.

Everyone has done their career-spanning boxsets, he has not and that makes me sad but that's not Prince's problem. For all I know, he could have decided he'll get to the vault when playing live gets too demanding, something to do in his retirement years.

I am very disappointed but does he have to be? Not really.

Okay so Prince's last few albums all were in the top 5, Playing sold out world tours and tons of festivals. Let me make an example. Alice cooper is no longer in the mainstream yet nobody calls him washed up. He's still touring and releasing albums he's just not as big as he used to be. Prince is the same way. Madonna, MJ, George Michale all those guys are no longer as popular as they used to be and so is Prince. Nobody stays at the top forever. Almost everyone knows who Prince is. He still sells out and is still the best. Washed Up not really. Maybe around 1997-2001 id agree. but now he's back. And he's been relavent ever since 2004.

Not really, but his productivity has fallen off in the past 3 years. The anticipated album keeps falling behind schedule and its obvious we are clutching at straws for fresh new material. I think also its highly unlikely he will give us a Purple Rain quality album or song again. The best we will get is a polite and well received song.

I mean he's 55 and he is not getting any younger, still we should be grateful for the musical legacy he has given us. Prince deserves to retire if he wants and lay down on his laurels.

Those "lot of people" are probably only a small number of members within your social circle.

The rest of the country has no problem whatsoever taking Prince seriously and singing Prince's praises.

Kind of reminds me of when Prince did the guitar solo on While My Guitar Gently Weeps at the RRHOF ceremony...you had a certain small segment of the audience who dismissed the solo as "not that great" and criticized Prince for "showing off" during his solo..."Everyone I've talked to agrees with me" was usually accompanied with the criticism lol.

Meanwhile, 98% of the rest of us were giving Prince a standing ovation and watching a video of his solo over and over again online.

Prince is insanely talented and his live shows pretty much knock people the fuck out. He reminded the general music audience of this with his Grammy performance with Beyonce, with his RRHOF guitar wizardry, with his performance of Fury on SNL, and with his Super Bowl halftime performance. Nobody had to go to an arena, listen to the radio or buy a CD...they just had to watch the little guy on TV. And those performances went over so well and left such a lasting impression with pretty much everyone, that last year at the Grammys all he had to do was pimp-walk out on stage with a cane and the crowd went nuts ...

Taylor Swift looking like an obsessed fan girl, Gotye and Kimbra spending the first part of their exceptance speech for Record of the Year gushing over Prince and what an honor it was simply to receive an award from him, and how inspirational he was to their art. Hell, even Halle Berry gushed about the same thing at the NAACP Image awards, finding it unbelievable that Prince was the one who handed her the award. And actually, when he just walked out to freakin' present the nominations he got a long, LOUD standing ovation, even louder than at the Grammys.
