Father's Song is an unreleased song recorded on 29 October, 1983 at Prince's Kiowa Trail Home Studio, Chanhassen, MN, USA. It was included as the ninth track on a 7 November, 1983 configuration of Purple Rain. The song appears in the Purple Rain movie, where Prince's character "The Kid" plays the song on piano after discovering his father's sheet music for the song. The main melody was then included as a section in Computer Blue. The song itself, however, remains unreleased. - PrinceVault

Computer Blue:The song was composed by Prince & the Revolution, with credit to his father, John L. Nelson for the guitar solo based on an untitled piano piece by Nelson. Prince titled the piece "Father's Song" and recorded it on piano for the film, though on screen it was portrayed as being played by Prince's on-screen father, actor Clarence Williams III.

would love for this song to be released on day-like it alot wink

The full version of Computer Blue is one of my fav songs by anyone. Even at over 12 minutes long, it never becomes dull. The feelings of loneliness, despair, desire, confusion, love and hate are all captured perfectly. And it's a stone cold groove to boot!

And the albun version is perfect

the long versions of course are good but the concise edited released version makes the song perfect as it never meanders

I don´t know about that but this song here sounds like it influenced Computer Blue a little bit.

I love the script background information on the songs and scenes

The CLUB is THROBBING. Prince is
onstage, stripped to the waist, SWEAT
seeping from his pores in torrents.
He's deep into the pit of "Computer
Blue, " locked into a provocative,
obscene graphic with Wendy. She's on her
knees in front of him, his crotch moving
directly in front of her lips. She's
made up fiercely, looks like Prince
himself. The total effect is unnerving
-- Prince is going down on himself.

I'm looking for that old q&a from love4oneanother (?) where someone asked him about the meaning of Computer Blue and he said something like "It hasn't revealed itself yet" or something to that effect..... If my memory serves me right. Can't seem to find it. He also talked about the meaning behind Starfish and coffee -again iirc-. Anyone? Thanks.

I've always hated the simulated fellatio stage choreography during Computer Blue in Purple Rain. This and the "toss the woman in the dumpster" scene. shrug That being said, I love the song Computer Blue. Heard the 14 minute long version a couple of years ago. cool Too bad that version didn't make onto the soundtrack.

Cool song. I hadn't heard it before. I hear the similarity to Computer Blue as well. That Ohio Players album cover takes me back too. One of my older sisters had the Fire album and Honey, I think. I used to stare at those pictures all the time as a kid. Maybe I should've spent more time listening to the music.

It used to be my least favorite when I was 12. These days it´s one of my favorites and Baby I´m a Star is my least favorite. Most folks dislike Take Me With U but I still love that song. And among the hardcore fans it seems to have become cool to dislike Purple Rain or prefer some other album over Purple Rain because Purple Rain is regarded as a commercial, pandering to the masses album but it will always be my favorite Prince album followed by Around the World in a Day and 1999.

I love Sign of the Times but I will always consider 1982-1985 my favorite Prince era, and the lyrics were among the most romantic and heartfelt ones.

I love Computer Blue but for various reasons it is one of the few songs that I don´t ever want to hear live these days, or maybe the ONLY favorite song of mine that I never want to hear live.

Why do you dislike Computer Blue?

Shall we begin?

Yes Lisa

Where is my love life?
Where can it be?
There must be something wrong with the machinery

Where is my love life?
Tell me, where has it gone?
Somebody please, please tell me what the hell is wrong

CHORUS:
Till I find the righteous one
Computer blue
Till I find the righteous one
Computer blue

Oh

Where is my baby?
Where can she be?
Somebody please, please tell me what is wrong with me

Where is my baby?
Where has she gone?
Somebody please, please tell me what the hell is wrong

CHORUS

Yeah

The computer’s on the verge of breakdown!

Come on
Oh baby, don’t make me

Poor lonely computer
It’s time someone programmed U
It’s time U learned love and lust
They both have 4 letters
But they’re entirely different words
Poor lonely computer
Poor, poor lonely computer
Do U really know what love is?

(Na, na, na, na, na)
Wave your hands in the air!
Now everybody sing it! (Na, na, na, na, na)
Everybody work out
Work out, work out (Na, na, na, na, na)
Everybody work out
Work out, work out (Na, na, na, na, na)
Everybody work out

He didn’t like living alone
The house where he lived had many hallways
It was a long walk 2 his bedroom
Because 2 him each hallway represented an emotion
Every one vastly different from the next
One day while she was with him
He decided 2 name each one
She walked by his side, one hand on his thigh
No – she was sort of half a step behind him
Yeah, the grip on his thigh intensified
As they walked slowly through the corridor
He named the hallway “Lust”
And as they passed through the next one
He named it “Fear”
The grip she now loosened
So he walked faster
Her hands now trembling
She let dropped 2 her side as he wrote the word “Insecurity”
He looked into her eyes and smiled a demon smile
And quickly walked onto the next
Corridor after corridor
He named almost all when suddenly… he stopped
He picked up the word “Hate”
She was gone
So he picked up another – “Pain”

On the verge of a breakdown
What is life without love?
It’s hell, Computer Blue!

Father, Father, the sun is gone
(Father, Father) The Dawn, the Dawn
Father, Father, where is the Dawn?
(Where is the Dawn, Father?)
(Na, na, na, na, na)
Na, na, na, na, na

Shall I go 2 church on Sundays?
Shall I stay home and pray?
Shall I try 2 make her happy?
Shall I try 2 make her stay?

Where is my love life?
Tell me, where can it be?

Narrow-minded computer
(Somebody please, please tell me…)
It’s time someone programmed U
(Somebody please, please tell me what’s wrong with me)
It’s time U learned women are not butterflies
They’re computers 2
Just like U Computer Blue
(Where is my baby?)
Chauvinistic computer
It’s time someone programmed U (Na, na, na, na, na)
U fall in love 2 fast and hate 2 soon
And take 4 granted the feeling’s mutual
(The feeling’s mutual!)
We’re computers 2
Just like U, Computer Blue

Review of Purple Rain by Prince and the Revolution
Music from the Motion Picture “Purple

Computer Blue” is another Purple Rain highlight. With a solo from Prince and an unobtrusive rhythm section, we get to hear the intricacies of his guitar skills.

Every Prince and protege album, back then, had at least 1 standout track that felt like Prince was about to break into something new, definately a defining moment in Purple Music, that I just never heard on anyone elses album. Sometimes it's a simple song, sometimes complex

a few examples: I Don't Want 2 Leave U(the Time), Dear Michaelangelo(Romance 1600) Screams of Passion(the Family) Computer Blue(Purple Rain) Sexuality(Controversy) Power Fantastic* just to name a few...

I'm glad you mentioned Dear Michaelangelo. I don't hear it being discussed a lot, but I always loved it. I didn't hear it until some time in the 90's, but it quickly became my favorite on that album along with Toy Box and A Love Bizarre, of course. Parts of it sound as if it would've fit nicely on either Batman or Lovesexy.

Purple Rain IS Prince's masterwork. He did not pander to the masses at all with that record. The masses just caught up to what he was doing .

I've met a few people in the last year, who aren't hardcore fans but fans of the 1999/Purple Rain music who have said some wonderful things about Computer Blue, and almost pissed themselves when i told them about longer versions released.
