Who was making him the breakfast....grits and gravy, cheese eggs and jam then? That's straight soul food, Southern breakfast. lol

What's wrong with Prince saying he's black, when he IS black? Seriously?

What were Nona Gaye, Robin Power, and some of these others then, hmm? Sheila in her Unsung said she identified as black while growing up. There is such a thing as black Latinas you know. Yep, she is a sista, and identifies as one. If the women are, or were mixed with black, then what?

In my opinion, Prince dated a lot of women who looked like versions of him. shrug

Blacks come in all colors, from passing for white to the deepest mahogany. We all know this, or should know this.

Now, as for Prince's mom, where is she multi racial? Just because they said she doesn't know the race of her father does not mean he wasn't black either. Prince and his fam look like a LOT of American blacks. Especially the ones in certain regions of Louisiana, and the South. His mom looked like my aunts. I bet his family could throw down on some gumbo, jambalaya, and etoufee'. That's why Prince pays homage to the N.O., and had the band jamming to When The Saints Go Marching In. They came in second lining. I see U Prince wink *waving my hanky*

"On the back cover of the book, it says, "Prince, son of a black father and a white mother." Then in the actual text of the book, it says Prince's father is black and mother is multiracial. I think they lied on the back cover to get those who wish Prince was at least 50% white to buy their product.
Many may remember in "Under a Cherry Moon" when Prince called Jerome "chocolate," but himself "butterscotch." However, that's because Prince is LIGHT-SKIN'DED. Prince ain't Mariah or Halle or Obama. He is plain, ol' Black just like me and most Black folk!
What this book doesn't cover is that Prince LIED about this multiraciality. Some say Prince claims to be part Italian. However, many magazines and documentaries have shown photos of his parents and stress that Prince has two Black parents who wouldn't be deemed anything besides Black in the United States. I know some Filipino Americans who said Prince was part Filipino and that's hogwash too. Prince may chant about "I wish there was no Black or white," but that doesn't mean he's neither. The book could have touched on something that it didn't: Prince has a romantic preference for mixed-race women.
To be fair, the book doesn't say "biracial this" and "biracial that" on every other page. It speaks about his childhood, start in music, hits, and misses. Surprisingly, there's only one page at most about "Purple Rain," the soundtrack or the film.
Like the Beyonce book in this series, these bookmakers have reversed things and somehow deemed that any Black person with one drop of white blood is biracial. On "African American Lives 2," dark-complected Don Cheadle learned that he's 20% white. Is this Biracial Achievers series gonna include him too one day?! Gimme a break!"

^^^^a review posted on the book from amazon. com.......this guy was just trying to sell books obviously FOH. boxing bored

Prince's mother is mixed with creole.....She is from New Orleans....But that still doesn't change anything. Like Beyonce. They both are considered & are black. Like it or not PRINCE IS A BLACK AMERICAN. He claims it now. Even in his recent hit single. "Breakfast Can Wait".

It may be just a racial code to you but being black in the US is also a cultural identity that NEEDS to be acknowledged & embraced, especially for someone who's achieved as much as Prince and if you don't understand why you might want to study American history a bit.

I know it's fun to joke around and he can be purple all you want but saying he is not black is a bit much. neutral

Veered Off Topic:
I understand African-American cultural diversity in America

Black & White are still social contructions.

What defines that? What if a 'black' person doesn't have those cultural connections? Are they then just American? who defines who and what is black culture. Do we do a disservice by saying black culture since there is no 1 specific black culture nor 1 community. Should we find specifics of culture to identify say the culture of African descendant people in Missippi vs in California. Do people outside of the states view americans by race or nationality.

The thing that is different from 'African-Americans' vs say Jamaicans, is that Jamaican is the 'nationality' as well as culture, it's not necessarily 'black' but Jamaican.

If a 'white' person is everything culturally 'black' are they Black too?

Prince has the freedom, just like you and anyone else to exist, without having to label himself or be labelled. He doesn't belong to you me or anyone. The same with you.

I think it was VioletBlue, that created a thread on the ups and downs of tradition culture etc

I've studied American history in general from many different avenues, as well as the descendants of African slaves from the transAtlantic slave trade till now. So I did much more than a BIT

My saying Prince is Prince, that he's Purple, means certain people especially celebrities tend to go beyond people viewing them racially. hell Prince created his own sub culture. MJ was also one (and not because he changed his look)

Prince is American of Midwestern cultural influences, including those that translate from his fathers background(creole) and his mothers(multiracial)

When Prince & the Revolution won Favorite BLACK album:Purple Rain. Was it really?

When they also in the same night won Favorite POP album:Purple Rain. Was it really,

Prince won Favorite Black single:When Doves Cry was it really (because I haven't heard anything like that from anyone) Purple Music!!

Prince in 1981 said "Am I black or white... Controversy"

Prince in 2011 said to an interviewer when commented on as being a black artist(?) stretches out his arm, puts it next to hers and asks "Am I" and she responds how he was whiter than she was.

Prince has always challenged labels or race

1999 just came on the radio

The reality is that black aka African American musicians couldn't get as much airplay never mind TV appearances as white folks back in the day. And that's only one of the reasons why who he is racially and culturally deserves to be mentioned and celebrated, and why you shouldn't deny who he is, because of all the contributions he made as a BLACK American. And no when I say he's black I am not claiming Prince only belongs to black people. I simply don't understand how anyone could even "go there".

You do know Prince calls himself black in his own songs right? He NEVER said he's neither black nor white and he's just purple like you said. This is starting to get ridiculous. lol

Know that m&m who has experienced racism himself, claims to be a hardcore rapper from urban culture is still a WHITE rapper. No matter what he does who he is doesn't change and as a matter of fact he seems to be proud of his own race and the fact that he was able to do what he did with that. It's rather simple.

"Controversy" lyrics, really now? lol You know the lyric right before that goes "I just can't believe all the things people say" right? And one more thing, whether his complexion is fair or dark he's a black American. Whoever said Prince is "whiter" or "lighter" than them is only speaking only in terms of complexion. I know that you know "black person" does NOT literally mean their skin has to be black or even brown. wink

Once again I am crucified for quoting biological science. Maybe its racist in the sense that it was white people who formulated the science of biology, but hey I will probably be labelled racist for saying that.

But get used to it, yes we are all humans, but we do all look different from each other, because humans are unique individuals but one species.

Why is it that so many orgers are opposed to science and reason? There is also reams of recent evidece and studies pointing out massive differences between various ethnic groups and races, such as chromosonal differences.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Ok, true, on the food, lol, but Soul Food and Southern food can have a different taste, and make up, (to me). Certain foods and recipes have been passed down from generation to generation. Just like Creole food, and Cajun food are not the same, *to me anyway*. I do realize anyone can make it according to recipe, eat it, and enjoy it. wink

Sheila's mom is a black creole OF4S. Her mom is black. I saw Peter Michael's band, she was sitting near me. I have creole roots on one side of my fam. We are black, lol

I am starting to think people who question Prince's racial background aren't around too many American blacks. Maybe I'm wrong? Just wondering. hmmm Is this the reason?

Prince is a lightskinned brotha. I know that cancels out the myth of him being mixed, other people trying to claim him, lol. He IS black though. It is, what it is.

I don't know what Jill or Andy identify as. When they get their own Unsung episode they can tell you, just as Sheila did, lol. I am going by what Sheila has said. lol wink

Wow and you're a moderator on this site? To say Prince isn't black when he is is disrespectful and to say that he's "purple" just because he has refrenced the color in the past is...damn. I know it may pain you and some other folks on here but deal with it, P is black. Just like Andre Cymone and Morris Day who in Morris's case, is actually naurally "lighter" than Prince is but A.C. and Morris never claimed this mixed thing either. Why? Because they weren't. And neither is Prince. He's a lil color struck perhaps but he's not bi-racial. Sorry to burst the purple ballons up in here...lol

Since I'm the original poster, let me state the premise of this thread and where I wanted to focus the discussion.

1. How can a publication get the facts so terribly wrong.

2. How can anything in the book be legit if a fundemental premise of the book is wrong.

3. Have any of you ass-licking fams actually bought the book despite? Was it any good? lol

I understand race is a hot topic, and people come into the thread with various intentions or

points of view. For example, OFFS stated that Prince 'is' Purple. Obviously he meant this

to be interpretted as how we shouldn't be judging him based on his skin color but towards

the higher ideals that he inspires---in otherwords, we owe it to him to look past his background

and embrace his vision, etc. Lawd, that some real hippy lovin' tree hugging cray cray right there,

but that was the spirit of his post--not to trivialize what being a black man is like in America.

There are serios discussions to be had, but I never wanted that on my thread. I truly apologize

to anyone who thought this thread aspired towards great heights or deserved a serious discussion

about anything at all.

I would like to do a very serious discussion about Prince being a homosexual, and I am currently

working on a very large thread topic to cover this very important issue--but until that thread

surfaces, let's keep it light and fun. I love you guys.

Quite an interesting topic, I can honestly say that Prince's race has never interested me, he is human therefore the same race as all of us.

Not wishing to anger any members of the community, just my opinion.

If Prince himself cleared up the topic of what race HE considers himself, does it actually matter??

The answer is no.

In some recent interview (there was a post linking to it over on the associated artists forum) Jill says something about people not knowing she was black, so I guess she identifies as black. In was in the context of talking about Teena Marie, and people's assumptions about her race, if I remember correctly. At least I think the link was from this site.
