Initial tracking took place between 14-25 June, 1992 at Olympic Studios, London, during the Diamonds And Pearls Tour dates in London. The song loops a sampled moan by actress Kim Basinger from The Scandalous Sex Suite. The live version played in 1993 added a guitar and drum coda following the song's ending - this coda was used for the song Chaos And Disorder in October, 1993; only performances containing the coda after that date are considered here to include musical portions from Chaos And Disorder, therefore.

  • Prince - all vocals and instruments, except where noted
  • Michael B. - drums
  • Sonny T. - bass guitar
  • Mayte - background vocals
  • Kim Basinger - sampled moan (uncredited)

We've had this discussion on here before, this line makes no sense like that - 'gay preacher'

"Turn a gay [man], preacher to a sinner" - As in turn a gay man straight and turn a preacher into a sinner.

Just sayin' wink

Somebody said he used a different guitar for each of the three solos. Is this true? And if so, which guitars did he use for which solos?

Gay in this instance (IMO) means joyfully content (with being a preacher), then he lusts for peach ("her") therefore is a sinner?

Turn a joyful (or gay) preacher to a sinner.

Turn a joyful (or gay) preacher to a sinner.

That makes sense, but I'll have to respectfully disagree.

*pulls big drag queen hell no face*

Edit - Stuck me like lightning just now - you could hear "Preacher to a sinner" like said in the OP or Preach HER to a sinner." I always went with the latter just like kewlschool.

Never even gave that lyric two thoughts before I saw it picked over on here have to admit.

I do not understand this debate. What the person above said is the truth. Debate over. Another song he has floating.around capitalizes on this as well. C&D. Gay preacher here is referring to a preach who is happy with is life and changes him to a sinful fan of fornication. He should have used priest cuz I'm under the impression preachers get married and have sex. Priest wudda made the line more effective.

Uh-oh, here she come
She got them gold hot pants on again
Yeah man
I wanna talk, but I don't know her
She's a peach

She was dark - she was tan
She made me glad 2 be a man
She was young - she was smart
Just one glance and she stole my heart
The kinda girl U wanna teach
She's a peach

Summertime, feelin' fine
Gettin' wild all that's on my mind
Here she come dressed in red
Get her done is all that's in my head
Her hot pants can't hide her cheeks
She's a peach

Hey

She was pure, every ounce
I was sure when her titties bounced
Every way she's a winner
Turn a gay preacher 2 a sinner
No one U want your mama meet
She's a peach

(Look at that girl playin' hard 2 get)

I would die if I kissed her
I would try, but I'm last on her list
She's so cool and I'm so ugly
I'd be a fool 2 think she could love me
This kinda girl's always outta reach
She's a peach

Hey
She's a peach
Hey

Fuck with that

Peach" was a failure Stateside. It peaked at #7 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart, which roughly equals #107, however, it did peak at #14 in the UK, its b-side "Nothing Compares 2 U" charted at #62 on the U.S. R&B/Hip-Hop chart.

If you watch The Hits Videos and turn on the subtitles for Peach, it looks like one line...

"Turn a gay preacher to a sinner"

Is what you see on the screen at the time.

While watching I thought, "needs a coma".

Peach
Three chord rock with all the frills of a master musician! A playful romp with an irresistible pounding, he revs up and tears this apart with some snarling fuzz and attitude of plenty. There’s the bass that threatens to spring through the speakers, drums so bright that it sounds like someone pounding on coffee cans, but the guitar solo alone is enough to have you longing to see it live. Heck, the whole guitar track is flawless.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY

THAT #@?% 0{+>!
HE MAY NOW BE KNOWN AS 0{+> , BUT BACK WHEN PRINCE HAD A PRONOUNCEABLE NAME, HE PUT THE FUNK BACK INTO ROCK AND ROLL. TWO NEW HITS ALBUMS CHRONICLE HIS REIGN.

Review by David Browne

...while a weak song like 1992's "Sexy M.F." sounds like a marvel of big-band arranging. (And of the inevitable previously unreleased tracks laced through the two albums, the best is the fuzz-blast rocker "Peach.")

Maybe the gay part is irrelevant to the power of the peach? Could have been a short preacher, a proud preacher, a loud preacher?

maybe it's an inside joke.

On April 10th 1993, Prince told journalist Alan Light: “We have a new album finished, but Warner Brothers doesn’t know it. From now on, Warners only gets old songs out of the vault. New songs we’ll play at shows. Music should be free anyway.”

Prince announced his retirement from recording on April 27th 1993. He would turn his creative talents to “live theatre, interactive media, nightclubs and motion pictures” instead. His contract with Warner Brothers would be fulfilled with songs from the vault.

Henry Hwang (who would become co-writer of Solo) was contacted by Prince’s people in April and then met with Prince in New York in May 1993: “
He gave me a cassette of new songs. Then he told me a story about the relationship between a rock star and a fan – an intense erotic affair conducted through letters, spinning off into exercises of fantasy and dominance – sex between lovers who never met in the flesh. From this premise I wrote the libretto for a musical, Come, which incorporated the songs on his cassette.”

Prince recorded new one word-titled songs and refined previous recordings throughout May 1993 and by the end of the month, he made [a new] configuration of the Come album as evidenced by the fax to Controversy.

Prince: Papa EP (April 1993) intended 4 release on Prince's birthday 7 June 1993 - reported in Uptown #9 & by MTV News

Prince sees UGTL as his Robert Palmer song...according to Prince at least.
Mr. palmer also saw himself some writing credits on Chaka's Come to my House.

It seems he assumes most preachers/priests r relatively asexual and content.

The word gay means more than one thing. At least Prince thinks so. "u're gay....used to mean U're happy." - Chaos & Disorder.

This needs to be put in FAQ so that this pointless discussion has a reason to not come up again.
