3rdeyegirl music so far, review

I figured I'd put my thoughts on the music together here since I don't see a thread dedicated to the new music as music. Feel free to add your own review or not for that matter. My rankings are out of 5 stars.

Breakfast Can Wait, 4 out of 5 -- This is my favorite of the bunch. It's a fun little funky song. The lyrics hold together really well and fit the music. Only problem with this one is the sound quality -- I guess this is what's called "compression." The drums sound ridiculously clipped, especially if I turn the volume up, which makes it a bit painful on headphones. And the "smurf" voice? I like it, although it is turned up too high (loud) in the mix. The lyrics, "Finally my eyes are open. I dreamed about you all night long. The only thing that I've been hoping is before you go to work, we get it on." are very cool. They go from romantic to naughty. I like that.

Boyfriend, 3 out of 5 -- Reminds me of People Pleaser but a little better. I really like the horns, drums, and bass. The verses are cool. But the chorus is terrible. The falsetto and layering just wreck it.

RnR Love Affair remix 7, 4 out of 5 (and other versions, unrated) -- The remix is my second favorite of the 3rdeyegirl songs. It's a cool combination of creative, interesting music and good storytelling. It's only this remix that makes me actually pay attention to the song all the way through, so I finally pieced together the story. The original version of RnR LA was too boring. I like the Dylan-esque storytelling approach, but there was nothing inspired or interesting about the music. Even Dylan's songs have better music. Remix 7 addressed that shortcoming. It's a cool song now.

Screwdriver, 2 out of 5 -- This song is so so. The "remix" is my favorite -- I mean if you're gonna make a rock song, go ahead and rock out like he does on this remix. The original is too game for me, and I can't stand the effect on the vocal that makes him sound like a teenager. But the problem with this song is the cringe-worthy chorus. C'mon, seriously!? Oh well. There are some cool lyrics "if you don't want to, it's cool" (playful) and "empty car on a fast train, driving rain, I can make you swear that you did some thang" (great imagery).

That Girl Thang, 2 out of 5 -- It's growing on me. But this one and Screwdriver are both a significant step below the other 3 songs. Like I said elsewhere, any of my reasonably talented musician friends could make a song this good or better. It just sounds very unfinished, lyrically & musically. Seems like we got a track destined for the vault, and it was released instead, which is cool. For that, I'm glad to hear it and pay for it, but I doubt I'll give it many more listens.

Random comparisons
20ten (one of my least favorite Prince album) -- All the new songs are either better than or as good as the best songs on 20ten. I'm way more excited about the 3rdeyegirl project.

Musicology (my favorite of the past decade, just ahead of Lotusflow3r single disc) -- Hmm. 3rdeyegirl songs are good enough to make it on this album, but they wouldn't be my favorites. There's nothing as good Call My Name, If Eye Was the Man in Ur Life, or On the Couch yet. But Breakfast Can Wait is as good as Illusion, Coma, etc, and RnR remix 7 is better than A Million Days. And there's more to come, so 3rdeyegirl might be one of my post-2000 favorites.

Overall I like this project, about 3.5 out of 5 so far. The music is pretty interesting, and there are some good lyrics along with the occasional cringeworthy words. The sound quality production/engineering could improve a bit. I look forward to the next piece of puzzle (next song) being released.

Breakfast Can Wait - 4/5 - not stunning but some interesting and fun(ny) directions.

Boyfreind 3/5 - simple fun.

RnR Love Affair (Remix 7) 4/5 better than all the pervious versions (The Stripped Down mix being the only other interesting one)

Screwdriver 3.5/5 - the live version is easily a 4 or higher, I just don't like the heavily (over?) produced polish the single has

Screwdriver (Remix) 3/5 - the Remix doesn't realy add much to the orriginal.

That Girl Thing 4.5/5 - something different and a true acoustic song, something that has been missing from the Prince cannon.

P.S. loving this style of release (and the regularity - long may it last!) although I prefer a real release, this is something diferent. also WAV is the best quality that I CAN put in to the format I want, rather than a shitty itunes release that I can't use on much other than apple stuff! or low quality mp3 (yuck!)

EDIT - on further listens, I'm gonna up Screwdriver (Remix) to 4 and drop Screwdriver to 3!

Screwdriver Remix is the most rockin thing he's done in awhile and its far and away my fave of the new tracks.

RnR Remix is next...perfect to work out to.

Screwdriver single...I love it almost as much as the remix. That hook grabs me and doesn't let go all day.

RNR original version...I have been playing this regularly since it became available on iTunes. Love the lyrics...and just KNOW this tune is going to be totally my new summer tune...sitting on the boat in the sun...I don't know why but this song screams summer to me.

Breakfast Can Wait...I really like this. The jury is still out on that sped up chipmunk voice. I think its a distracts from an otherwise steller tune. But it also brings something totally original to the tune. this one keeps getting better with each listen

Boyfriend...A good tune. Fits well with the other new stuff. I consider it a great "album track".

That Girl Thing...I wasn't crazy about it at first, but its definitely growing on me. I listened to it on the way to work this morning its becoming a cool little track to my ears. I love how it sounds like he JUST recorded it and threw it to us...not sure if that is really the case, but I am liking that unique demo quality to it. A lot of us complain that sometimes he over-produces tracks that we've heard when they were skeletons (Endorphinmachine?)...we definitely can't say that about this track.

i enjoy the fun and spontaneity of the new project. for me, it's perfect. the music pops into our world like unexpected flowers and every day is a new adventure. i think prince really has something here. i could see polishing the new websites a bit but the idea works as it is.

The way he is releasing this really makes listeners pay attention to each song.

The material is ok.

It's essentially vault-quality material that's made available right away instead of being shelved in the vault, isn't it?

Nothing new or really all that interesting, but it's nice that he's putting something out.

I guess I should clarrify what I mean by vault-quality since some of the stuff in the vault is probably finished and ready-to-go.

I mean demo-quality material. Some of it is like listening to a first-draft, and not completeled product.

^ for me, the raw quality, the demo-like content, is what i love about this kind of fresh. i find it interesting to hear the different mixes, versions. we get a peek into his creative process.

i'm not looking for the 'perfect' song, or finished product. i enjoy a diamond in the rough. i love that a wild card is there in the unprocessed versions we're getting.

Agreed, another of my favorite bands, Therapy? (Heavy-ish metal), did exactly that a few years ago, releasing a variety of progressions (initial jam, rehearsal, demo) of each song online after the album dropped

I think the site offers the oppertunity to buy the songs you really like.

So, nobody needs to be hating or being negative over here. I you don't like the song, don't buy it. If you like it, buy it.

I really like the songs and the way they progress.

And I have great respect for the issues that Prince sings about.

Same page, different book is about Palestine and Isreal.

Live out Loud is about encoureging Gay and Lesbian people to be open about their sexuality.

Screwdriver, to me is such a sexy, wild, funny and heartfelt song.

I haven't heard That Girl Thang yet. But the reviews are good.

I really like all the developments in Purple land.

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

I think That Girl Thing makes it onto my i-pod but the rest belongs on either 2010 or Planet Earth and neither one of those made it to my i-pod.

Bring on the live shows.

This stuff is NPGMC quality, not album worthy. Screwdriver will make it on an album, imo. And the sound on lol is horrid. wtf?

Nothing staying on my current playlist...except That girl thang.

Well that might be true if the site had a preview function but, seeing as it doesn't, you often have to buy before you try.

Some of the troll type negativity you see on this forum (i.e. "Prince hasn't done anything decent in the past 15 years" or "I'd rather poor shit into my ears") gets on my nerves, but if you buy a track and don't really like it you've got as much right to say so as someone who likes it.
