Lovesexy or the Black Album?

Paired together for this question for obvious reasons. Which one do you actually prefer?

I vote Black Album. I suppose Lovesexy is much much more interesting, but Black Album is just a funk as hell fun album.

Honestly, I think they BOTH are a bit overrated. They do indeed need to be judged together and I think a double album would have been the best way to experience them. I don't find myself "going to" either album frequently at all, (a tracked version of Lovesexy would help) but if I had to vote, I think i'd pick Lovesexy because of Anna Stesia. It's the most CLASSIC, transcendent track from either album to me. My favorite tracks are I Wish U Heaven, Dance On, Glam Slam and A.S. On the black album, Bob George, Le Grind, and Rock Hard...

Black album destroys Lovesexy. Lovesexy is very weak other than Anna, and ALphabet. Black album is good with rock hard, le grind and 2 nigs are okay, cindy c, superfunky, bob george . The dance overates both albums. Lovesexy as far as prince goes 5.5/10, and overall music 6.0. Black album 7.5 on prince scale. and 8.00 on music scale. Black album is good and has some tracks u can listen to alot but isn't prince's greatest and far from it. However, it was new ground, mysterious, and the music itself is decent. Lovesexy was probably made very quickly.

my theory about fans and "Lovesexy":

"New fans" / Newbies: these fans dislikes Lovesexy, they can't appreciate it because of the complexity.

"Old fans from back then" / those oldtimes who were around back then in '88 just loves Lovesexy, this fine masterpiece with all those layers in the sound and those wonderful screaming guitars. Excellent music videos too, and also, the extended versions of:

Alphabet Street: This Is Not Music This Is A Trip,

the Glam Slam Remix,

and of course Part 1 + 2 + 3 of I Wish U Heaven.

wow, those were the days. I really appreciate this excellent album, the videos and the ext versions.

I guess the "new fans" prefer Prince albums like 3121 or even Planet Earth. question

LoveSexy.

I just wish he'd cut Cat's rap out of Alphabet Street. It makes a perfectly charming little song sound so jeering and out of place.

Overall, LoveSexy is a great album, though it pales in comparison to SOTT which came before it--so it took me a while to get into it.

Lovesexy is one of the only prince albums that on first listen i listened to the whole thing in one sitting. It doesn't suck. But after listening to it all in one setting not many of the tracts completely stand out. Ur right, it is pretty complex at times but complexity isn't always a good thing. And duh alot of newer fans are gonna like 3121 or musicology however disagree with planet earth. It's an album that everyone is supposed to be neautral too which isn't necessarly good or bad.

Yeah this!

Black Album: lots of fun(k)

LoveSexy: lots of overproduction and heavy handed

I prefer Lovesexy, it's such a spiritual album with crazy arrangements and strange lyrics. I think that it's a bit hard to pick a few tracks from this album to listen to outside of the album's context, it has to be listened to whole! I can see why some wouldn't like it but I think it's fantastic from beginning to end. I also love The Black Album just for how funky it is. Both of them are essential Prince albums though.

Oh and thedance's theory, it might be true in general but I became a Prince fan in 2011 when I was just 14 and I love this album FOR it's complexity, the arrangements, the lyrics, the message, and even the crazy production that fits this album's theme IMO. It never fails to make me feel better when I'm down!

The Black Album.

I "like" Lovesexy. It's ok. But The Black Album is in a whole other level. It's another peek at an artist at the top of his game.

lovesexy is the most idiosyncratic prince album there is. it's strength lies in the fact it was recorded so quickly. it's the most honest representation of prince's spirit/sexuality there is. it's his pandora's box well and truly smashed open.

how anyone can not rate tracks such as dance on is beyond me. the complexity of the drum track is mind blowing. like jimi's "fire" set in the 21st century.

i have zero interest in owning a tracked version, i follow prince's vision of it being a complete spiritual, soul cleansing journey.it starts with the crackle of fire and ends with the sound of water, the journey of redemption. thats fucking genius folks.

i love the black album but for me it's always been and always will be lovesexy...new power, new power, lay it on me, i need some bottom in here.

I'm gonna have 2 go with LoveSexy. Glam Slam, Anna Stesia, I Wish U Heaven, & Positivity are my favorites. Only if the cd wasn't one long track.

4 the record... The Black Album is very funky. Can't deny that at all.

Yep. Bang on.

I can't answer the question though. It'd be like picking one from a pair of triplets. SOTT, The Black Album and Lovesexy are far too conjoined for me. Come to think of it, SOTT is connected in the same way to Crystal ball but that's another thread. It all went a bit like that after The Dream Factory/Parade/Charade, oh shit, I'm digging holes for myself.

Black was raw. Superfunkin in faces and I funkin love it. Lovesexy was an explosion. Like he'd been charged up overnight on some ethereal sexual charger. He'd overdosed on it too. Gone to the park and played with it and come back with Lovesexy in what, eight weeks? Better produced, cleaner sounding with some brilliantly put together tunes. I still remember hearing the 12" bits of I Wish U heaven for the first time. Hot hot, shit hot... Lovesexy.

I'd happily listen to an instrumental of Dance on and I still want the extended Lovesexy thang. Positivity y'all. Hold on, 2 ya soul, we gotta long way, 2 go. yes

I'm keeping em both and if there's any shit from anyone I'll call in their brother/sister, SOTT.

Big Ben says the B side to the "Ooh Matron" mix is nothing short of sublime.

Now we're talking spiritual trinities. Charlton, Best and Law. SOTT, TBA and Lovesexy. I love em all.

I'll raise ya.

Lovesexy music it's just such a magical album to me.Prince once described it as "a mindtrip....like a psychedelic movie" and he's absolutely right. It wasn't just an album,it was a vibe,a journey that Prince was taking us on.

I'm one of the few fans who thinks that The Black Album is overrated boxed lol Sure,it is funky but there are no outstanding lyrics or a classic song like "Anna Stesia".It's just a fun party record, nothing more, nothing less.

If your body needs water
Keep dancing cuz u oughta
Keep the blood flowing down 2 your feet
Brother ... 'll be around in a minute

But the aftertaste just lasts and lasts
If u kiss somebody, u wanna party all night
All right.

If u do 2 much, your skin'll be sensitive 2 the touch
The first person 2 touch u, you'll wanna fuck.
U take them 2 your crib and u tie them 2 a chair
And u make funny faces and they get real scared
and u turn on the neon, and u play with yourself,
Til u turn em on.

Cuz I'm stripped down, It's all fun and games
Til the very next day, til, damn, u don't remember my name
Maybe I'll see u next Thursday night, maybe I won't?
But that's alright, cuz in my possession, there's a signed confession
that says, "I was the best you'd ever had" ...

They belong together somehow..the best would have been one album with them combined..just like the lovesexy tour...but it didnt happen..

ofcourse the lovesexy album has the most magical jewels...''glam slam'', ''anna stesia'' and ''lovesexy''....so that album tops them easily...
