What happened?

This thread about

Prince being nice to his fans by thanking them

and he is enthusiastic to let his fanbase know he is working on someting,

turned into orgers venting negativity of the past.

I don't want to argue that Prince has been a great guy troughout his career. That just is not the case, he's done pretty low things.

But, my mom always told me to forgive others, because you also want to be forgiven for your mistakes. And then she would say:

"He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her."

And that still is my adagium.

It seems as if people here get their life fuel by bitching about Prince.

Why spend so much energy in something that makes you feel so negative?

Well, around 2004-2008, a lot of numb nutz found their way here. And were never put in checks by the elders who resided here as guardians of the purple..

Financially, for me this year, he may aswell play on the moon. But I could stretch to a boxset of remasters. More chance of him playing on the moon than seeing that though.

2013 might be big, but probably not for Prince...

I think his songwriting, as demonstrated on RnR Love Affair, is more lacklustre than ever (and the number of mixes of this song suggests that he truly believes this is a great tune - where's the quality control or a sense of objectivity?). He really needs to check out artists like Coldplay, Lana del Rey and others who seem far superior at the songwriting game. Like them or not, their best songs are full of drama, emotion, twists and turns. And in the end, it's about the songs and melodies, not the "technical skills" or musicianship. Prince probably considers himself superior to my two examples here, but they don't aim at being multiinstrumentalists or becoming experts at any instrument - you don't need that to be a great songwriter (no better example than McCartney/Lennon). Their focus is on the songs. Prince lost that focus or dedication somewhere along the line. And that's why 2013 won't be so great for him...

Well Per, you know music consumption is all just a matter of taste and subjectivity. I can't sit through even one song by Coldplay or Lana, much less an entire album, as they bore me to tears. Just like there are certain Prince songs I can't bring myself to listen to (Temptation, Annie Christian, Jughead, Arrogance/The Flow, Another Like Me, Cause & Effect, etc). The list goes on.

However, I can't really make a blanket statement about his talent because certain songs don't move me. Prince has always been inconsistent to my particular musical taste. There are things that grab me, there are things I detest, and there are things that just plain bore me. But he has always been his own quality control for better and for worse, which is something one just has to accept to be a Prince fan.

It is horrible to say maybe, but I yawn at this whole "2013 will be big" thing. I am afraid we'll just get another "trying to please 'em all" release like we've had so many before. A few ballads, a few rock songs, an "experimental" cut, and one or two funky tunes that don't really hit hard.

So the new album better be raw, wild, experimental and very funky. And/Or have extreme interesting production techniques. Otherwise I am not interested anymore, I'm afraid. Prince's albums have been too safe/MOR for my taste for a long time now, bar one or two songs on each album maybe. And the lyrics are mostly horrible or uninteresting these days.

I am starting to get in the camp of the people who think current Prince is just a bad impersonator of the Real Deal we were accustomed to in the eighties. My believe in his abilities are waning, to be honest.

I might cheer up when I actually hear the new album, but I fail to get excited at this point.

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...
