Virtual Revolution

Much fuss is being made about Prince's reunion with former Revolution members Wendy & Lisa for his "Planet Earth" CD, due July 24.

But Wendy Melvoin told I.W. that she wasn't even in the studio with Prince; he e-mailed files to her, and she and Lisa Coleman added their parts on five songs and e-mailed them back.

Planet Earth is the twenty-fifth studio album by American musician Prince, first released July 15, 2007 in the UK as a free covermount with The Mail on Sunday national newspaper. This was followed by the album's worldwide distribution. It features contributions from his newest protegée Bria Valente and former New Power Generation members Marva King, Sonny T, and Michael Bland, as well as Sheila E. and former Revolution members Wendy & Lisa. The album debuted at number 3 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, selling 96,000 in its first week. Upon its release, Planet Earth received generally positive reviews from most music critics, based on an aggregate score of 65/100 from Metacritic.

The track features past bandmembers Michael B. on drums and Sonny T. on bass guitar. The album's credits do not indicate who else played on the track, however.

Planet Earth

Imagine holding Planet Earth in the palm of your hand
With no regard 4 your place of birth or claim 2 any land
The only thing between us now is the truth we understand
If Planet Earth was in the palm of your hand

50 years from now what will they say about us here?
Did we care 4 the water and the fragile atmosphere?
There are only 2 kind of folk and the difference they make
The ones that give and the ones that take

CHORUS:
Just like the countless bodies that revolve around the sun
Planet Earth must now come in2 balance with the one
That caused it all 2 be and then we'll see His kingdom come
So shall it be written, shall be sung

Imagine U could rid the earth of anyone U choose
Which ones would U need the most and which ones would U lose?
Do we wanna judge another lest we be judged 2?
Careful now... the next one might be U

CHORUS:
(All around)
(Right now! The one, the one, the one)
(We will see His kingdom come)

Imagine sending your first born off 2 fight a war
With no good reason how it started or what they're fighting 4
(No good reason, what are we fighting 4?)
And if they're blessed 2 make it home, will they still be poor?
Pray 4 peace right now and 4ever more

CHORUS
(Ooh, wee!)
(All around the sun, yeah)
(Say we got 2, with the one, the one, the one)
(We will see His kingdom come)

Oh, say it one more time

CHORUS
(Jehovah)
(See His kingdom come)
(Shall be sung)

So shall it be written, shall be sung

Album notes
Additional personnel: Shelia E, Wendy & Lisa.
The Purple One's PLANET EARTH arrived amid controversy, as Prince's label refused to release it in the U.K. after he made it a free giveaway with copies of a British newspaper. Despite the unconventional promotional tactics, the album proved to be one of Prince's most straightforward releases in some time. The uptempo pop-rockers "Guitar" and "Resolution" hark back to his mid-'80s heyday, and the slow-jam R&B of "Future Baby Mama" finds him turning up the romantic heat in no uncertain terms. There's no lack of danceability either, as evidenced by the funk workout "Chelsea Rodgers."
For all the unfettered energy and libidinous inspiration, though, PLANET EARTH represents a more mature Prince. Pushing 50, he has more on his mind than partying. The elegantly unfurled title track and the aforementioned "Resolution" bespeak a strong sociopolitical awareness, as he addresses the global concerns of climate and war, respectively. Ultimately, the album serves as both a pure slice of sonic pleasure and a potentially consciousness-raising platform for Purple positivity.

ROLLING STONE

Prince Planet Earth (Sony)

"I love you, baby, but not like I love my guitar," Prince leers in Guitar, between blasts of heroically pointless Edge-style soloing. It's his most slamming summer jam since "P Control" in the summer of '94, or "Alphabet St." in the summer of '88, or maybe "Delirious" in the summer of '83.

What did people do for fun in the summer before Prince? Planet Earth is one of those albums he makes when he's trying a little harder than usual, if not hard enough to alienate his core audience, which loves him for indulging himself.

" Planet Earth" and "Lion of Judah" continue the hard-rock groove, while "Future Baby Mama" and "Somewhere Here on Earth" revisit his smooth R&B side. As for "Guitar," he's decided to jack the post-punk revival, so he swipes a guitar riff from U2 ("I Will Follow") and a bass line from Duran Duran (the same song that provides his album title). Wily bastard

Prince also said that after the shows he was going to take time off to travel and study The Bible. He also revealed he’s been house-hunting in London, and added: “I really like Earl's Court , but I can’t live there!

Chinawhite Nightclub

6 Air Street, W1B 5AA, Central London, UK

Chinawhite is one the most prestigious clubs in Central London. The nightclub is famous for the VIP guests and celebrities including Prince Harry and many others. Special parties, a glamorous atmosphere, shows and many surprises for one of the sexiest crowds in town.

Taking a break from his 21 day London tour, Prince visited the infamous China White nightclub. Word on the street is that Prince refused to leave the nightclub until he was covered from London's torrential rain by TWO umbrella's. Apparently his security was overheard saying that not one drop of rain was to land on him or else! You have to laugh, but hey it's Prince,

On paper this doesn't look like such a bad album, but it has proven so far to be perhaps my least favorite.

I liked the direction, and I feel like it had potential, but it felt very slight, all things considered.

I knew it had to be Planet Earth, I have been listining to this CD for the last 3 or 4 days now & love it more now than I did before. That happens a lot w/P's albums. I always thought Controversy wasn't as good as Dirty Mind & 1999 but again, I found myself loving it more now than back then. But Planet Earth does have a Revolution-type vibe to it. I've always loved P's solo work more than The Revolution stuff. But The Revolution stuff is the shit, too!!!

when i heard Somewhere here on earth for the first time

(it was on the radio, some jazz station i think)

i initially thought it was Smokey Robinson singing,

it had that Here i go again feel about it,

so i took it as a little tribute to Smokey smile

This all lead to the most heavy CD sleeve I ever obtained (Indigo Nights).

Which is a bit funny as it contradicts the theme of the song Planet Earth.

It's worth noting that the only added instruments, no backing vocals (because at one point people were pointing to this song or that song as sounding like W&L doing vox).

As a taster for his 21 dates at the O2 arena in August, Prince played a two-hour, late-night secret show at the 1,500-capacity Koko in London last night.

Superbly backed by a new line-up for the New Power Generation, which included two Beyoncés-lookalike dancing twins, singer Shelby Johnson and a horn section featuring Maceo Parker, it was a performance few of the people lucky enough to squeeze into the Camden venue will forget.

Coming on stage at midnight, he teased us with "So many hits, so little time". Punctuated by solo turns by Parker and Johnson, the 20-number set included Kiss, Nothing Compares to U, Girls and Boys, Musicology, and ripped-up versions of U Got the Look and the Hendrix-inspired Let's Go Crazy. As well as a broad sweep of his back catalogue, including tracks from last year's 3121 album, there were covers of Play that Funky Music, Amy Winehouse's Love is a Losin' Game and Gnarls Barkley's Crazy.

During one extended jam, Prince disappeared from view and emerged in the middle of the audience on the first floor balcony, grabbing a handful of fans to join him on stage. It all proved too much for one girl, who leapt on the singer and attempted to straddle him as he lay on the stage before being hauled away by security.

Doubtless she was carried away by the sheer hedonistic euphoria, generated not only by the man himself, who even at the age of 48 did nothing to belie his status as music's supreme performer, but also by an ecstatic audience.

"You give me the energy to do this", he told us. "At the O2 we're gonna turn that thang out. They're gonna be the best shows you've ever seen." You better believe it.

Prince Attacked by Woman During London Concert?! : Rolling Stone ... It seems that reports that Prince may have been attacked at a show in London last night ... one over-excited fan reportedly gave Prince a kiss on the cheek ...

www.rollingstone.com/rock...n-concert/

It seems that reports that Prince may have been attacked at a show in London last night were not entirely accurate. During the concert several of the Purple One’s fans were pulled on stage to dance. In the throws of the insta-party moment, one over-excited fan reportedly gave Prince a kiss on the cheek inspiring the pop star to fall to the floor in a mock swoon. A bouncer didn’t get the apparent joke and removed the fan from the stage. Prince then reportedly appeared with his head wrapped in a towel. Funny guy!

I agree with you 100% with that. not Cohesive at all. The album felt much more like a compilation of songs rather that a album with a unified vibe to it.

But with that being said it is a good testament to his musical versatility. The only song I realy did not care fore was "All the midnights in the world". To me The album is in the top 5 of his efforts of the 2000's.
