When's the last time Prince played a full version of Computer Blue?

When's the last time Prince played a full version of Computer Blue?

Why doesn't he play it? I don't think you can call it obscure. No tracks from Purple Rain album are obscure since so many people know that album beginning to end... Like Thriller...

So, back to my question when did he play it last? and properly? Who was on guitar with him?

I need me some Computer Blue live...

Wendy?
Yes Lisa
Is the water warm enough?
Yes Lisa
Shall we begin?
Yes Lisa

Where is my love life?
Where can it be?
There must be something wrong with the machinery

Where is my love life?
Tell me, tell me
Where has it gone?
Somebody please please tell me what the hell is wrong

Until I find the righteous one
Computer blue
Until I find the righteous one
Computer blue

Oh
Yeah

1985?

In 1998 in Stuttgart he did a bit of that song. Not a ull version and with a 'are you gonna go my way' twist.

I think he's trying to avoid having Chaka Khan or Larry Graham felating him on stage.

By 'full version' we're talking about 4 minutes, I'm still waiting for him to give the hallway speech. That would be unbelievable

No hallway in Stuttgart in 1998.

The idea that he doesn't play that song while playing all the '84 materials to death is surreal.

People would kill for a say 7+ minute CB in 2012.

What about Witness -> Dreamer?

Incredible missed opportunities not playing CB and other 'fan classics' such as this isn't it! And i think that's what some of us get frustrated about - the reliance on a a very narrow hits setlist over quite a few years not -

i.e. there are many tracks that are well known 'classics' within Prince's catalogue that just didn't happen to be singles. Such a shame they don't get heard.

Oh well......

Prince would rather have Shelby shouting "Put Your Hands Up," over a drum beat for an hour than play Computer Blue. He'd rather play Play That Funky Music where he's going through the motions. Sad that the best live performer in the history of pop music is coasting like this. If he brought it every night, it would be amazing. Of course this is the guy who releases Jughead and Daddy Pop, but Old Friends 4 Sale(original) and Moonbeam Levels gather dust in the vault.

Sometimes I'm glad he doesn't play it, I would hate to hear it butchered and made into a soul song

OF4S was remixed and then released like In A Large Room with No Lights and ExtraLovable

It's only logical to be jaded being a fan of a man with a whimsical approach to what is hip. His definition of this is obviously totally different than what his critical fans consider cool (I am not talking about people that shout YEAH PRINCE, even if he's on stage farting a song).

I have stopped trying to come up with answers why he makes all these curious choices when it comes to his music. It's his, so he can do with it whatever he wants, it's just not any less puzzling why he makes the choices he does. People that love great music from the man, like "Computer Blue" will always be puzzled why he instead plays "Play That Funky Music" or Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy".

To each their own, I suppose, it's just that all these great songs, released or unreleased ARE out there and making us yearn for a sonic proper version of songs like "Wonderful Ass" in THIS lifetime. Or "Computer Blue" played live, just some dirty guitar and that wonderful extended LP part (the Father's Song-part).

Oh well...

Perhaps the Computer Blue longer versions were very special and sentimental to him and that's why he doesn't play them anymore. Not some ridiculous assumption that he would turn it into a "soul song", which there is nothing wrong with in the first place, but it may bring back bad memories to him. You know that he has written many songs about a certain lady in those days that he may feel odd singing again. Just because we want to hear it, being stuck in a time period, doesn't mean that Prince is. If you no longer feel that anything he does is cool, why suffer by reading and responding to threads in a Prince.org site? I guess some people don't want to grow with Prince even though that time after time Prince has changed his image, sound, etc. and continues to do so... he is an artist that is not bound by the chains of what others think are "cool" or "hip". He is Prince. You either get on the ryde or gett off! smile

Perhaps.

not ridiculous assumption at all,

I'm making ref to the changing of songs that don't need changing

You don't appreciate the song if you say there is nothing wrong with turning it into a soul song

That certain lady which bad memories may come back whom he's had on stage with him during 3121 with Wendy backing him on Love Bizarre and a few others,

Hmmmm he plays the Beautiful Ones(totally created 4 that woman) he's performed the Ballad of Dorothy Park co-written with that woman, Strange Relationships, Empty Room, etc etc

I'm not arguing personally why he doesn't play it, I don't really want him too.

The arguement of people wanting to hear it being stuck in a time period, is a weak statement. So if someone wants to hear something from the 1st album he's never played that is being stuck in a time period? The originator of this post just wanted to know when was the last time he played the song live, there are many songs he's only played during the promo of that album/year. How many songs from Lovesexy has he not played since the Lovesexy tour?? MOST and if a fan wants him to play it, your response is "Don't be stuck in a time period grow with Prince and let it go"

Prince performs every song from that album (except for Computer Blue & no longer Darling Nikki) and the fans are stuck. He plays Let's Go Crazy, Take Me with U, the Beautiful Ones, When Doves Cry, Purple Rain, I Would Die 4 U, Baby I'm A Star. most every set, year after year...

You made an bloated arguement based on a few opinions about any recent live renditions of this song. You seemed to be taking this way to personal.

This is a high pressure post! Should I go with 1, 2 or 3? hmmm..

I meant thats true, he could butcher it. Its possible but I don't think he would, or at least I hope he wouldn't. I would be happy to see him play it during a guitar heavy set like Endorphinemachine/Dreamer/Computer Blue...

It might be more to do with the band he has right now... Maybe he needs a Wendy for guitar dueling... Not really sure... Of course could be many reasons but the idea that he might fuck it up didn't really occur to me. I mean, he's a muscial genius and one of the greatest performers ever. I would be just happy to see him play it. I am not expecting it to sound like 1985. I would just love to see what he would do with it now.

Just because he plays older tracks now (or releases updated versions of older tracks) doesn't mean we don't still get to enjoy the originals. We can all go back and listen our fave versions or watch our fave performances. I am just happy to see him celebrating these older tracks and Computer Blue is such an awesome track, it's absence is noticeable and I for one, would love to see him play it again in full.

So far as some people being jaded... well I think we should all be happy he is still performing at all. There are many many artists who don't still play with the ferocity that Prince does. I am very very happy that my fave artist loves touring and playing live club shows etc. He has given us all so much already. I couldn't fault him for anything. Be thankful for what you have.

[Edited 8/2/12 6:26am]

lol you probably picked #3 overall, but I'm none of those, everyone has opinions about music (and art) that's what happens, just because it's Prince doesn't mean we can't have an opinion.

Everything he does isn't good because he's a genius in some areas. People put up pieces in museums and art shows to get a reaction and an opinion. Music is art too, just because Prince made it doesn't mean I should just be thankful and love it anyway right? I don't have to like Purple & Gold and as a real fan if Prince asked me what I thought of it and I say "Oh Prince your a musical genius and I'm just thankful that at your age your still alive and performing etc" that wouldn't be a constructive answer, nor an honest answer, that answer would not make him a better person, would not challenge him.

I usually create my own "mothers day cards 4 example" and one year I gave my mother a store bought card. She didn't accept it, she told me "That's not you, that's not the quality you usually give" she wasn't putting me down or not being thankful, she was telling me don't go settle for easy and simple, if you're going to give something give your best or don't do it"

I'll be honest, when he played the Beautiful Ones with the ballet dancer, the music was so uneventful, no build none of those waves of sound like it had. the interraction between Prince and Misty was beautiful though.

Alphabet St I don't think I ever(not saying he hasn't) but I've never heard it in it's sharpness as the album, he always seems to play it like a folkish honky tonk song, it's fun but

Its possible for him to fuck up Computer Blue

Now if he did a dark piano Hallway Speach rendition that would be cool

I know I can't go back and play what I have. I personally have stated that I really don't care to hear him play Computer Blue, so not being rude or anything.. the "we can all go back and..."

Again, not having an opinion or having yeah or nay comments about something doesn't mean a person isn't thankful. I mean I'm a big Prince fan who still would love to hear him do a show of his 20Ten album, I'm not telling him go back and play computer blue. Fans give their money for music and shows big money at that

Funny, I really like and partially love 20Ten. I absolutely love Lotus Flow3r. I like some of MPLSsound, but not all, and I like the original versions of all the songs you mentioned tons better. I actually like the new Large Room and Extra Lovable, but not even half as much as the originals.

Yeah I was disappointed with MinnSound, it just didn't do what the title said

yeah the originals of all 3 just give me so much feeling

These days, I'd be afraid it would get the same treatment as I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man did live. Interesting as a novelty, but I vastly prefer the original.

Just to clear things up, the three "newer" versions of the songs you mentioned aren't "remixes". A "remix" means taking a finished song and its pool of overdubs and alternative tracks and rearranging the mix using all the material (from that session). Those three songs were re-recorded, with almost everything (especially in the case of IALRWNL and Extralovable) recorded on a seperate day, in a seperate session, with an entirely new idea in mind, than the first version was recorded!
