just a simple basic website, no frills. offer the album as a download with the option

of a physical copy for those who want it.

normal price, say between $10 and $15.

very limited overhead and almost all of the profit goes straight into his pocket.

and with 'no frills site' i mean, no promises, no months of hyping something,

no subscribtion fee, no distractions.

just a simple 'store' type of site, like radiohead, nine inch nails and so many

others have done before.

just open up the site, show people the product (tracklist, costs, snippets, etc)

and have a releasedate firmly set. like, two weeks from now, max.

it should be a quick, 'in and out' type of situation, where you immediately see

the album or albums or whatever, just click through and pay and download it

straight to your own pc.

he could later add more product to that same site and just build on trust and

service from there. something he should have concentrated on from the very

first site he ever had.

if he'd handled all his sites properly, he would have at the very least 50,000

people ready to snap up anything he'd throw online.

but perhaps it's too late by now. i'm not sure if people would be willing to do

online transactions with prince anymore. although, with a transparant site,

like the one i described above, i'm sure people would be willing.

I totally with all your points for this sales model.

And I don't think it's too late either, I prefer to buy physical CD's (or Vinyl, or both) and given the choice of buying it from Amazon or a musician's own website, I'll go for the musician's site every time. I know I'm far from alone there too.

The overheads would be so low that he wouldn't even need to give it any thought, it would just be another (modest) income stream and would certainly provide him with more income than his current non-existent sales model does.

As far as downloads are concerned though, it's got to be wav (or I might consider flac), but I'm not interested in paying for shitty bitrate mp3's or iTunes crap.

The last incarnation of the npg music club with the music store that anybody could buy stuff from was a good model (perhaps even a bit too frilly with its fancy graphics and stuff) - except without the pointless DRM (that anyone with half a brain could get around) this time.

Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

Physical & lossless - It's not hard, every mom and pop operation does it, but somehow it eludes one of the biggest established musical stars on the planet.

He should create a new album.

Then he should name a website after that album, specifically.

But just to be fun and whimsical, he should add a riddle that only

diehard fans can figure out in order to get to the point on the website

where they can subscribe for...say, $77 bucks?

He must advertise by promising rare footage of things though..Say,

every concert he's ever performed? Or the promise of several more

albums to be available on the site--maybe a forthcoming really

really good jazz album?

He should probably write the website in Flash technology so that

it has a retro 1997 feel to it, complete with non-standard menus

and navigation...Maybe have a pointer resembling his symbol

flying around a screen...Something that will give all intersted customers

hours and hours of fun trying to solve and figure out.

He should, just to throw in some humor, not make the album download

work correctly for about 24 hours just to show them his humorous side.

Also, the available videos can't be downloaded, so that it stirs interest

in visiting the site more often, and he should place videos that die-hard

fans have already obtained by other means, just to teach them about

the importance of honoring singer-fan trust.

But h should totally give the customer options too. After they've signed up,

he should make the album available at a major retailer...say Target for

11 bucks or so....If they don't buy it then, they can wait a year or so and

it'll be around 3 bucks in the bargain bin.

Seriously, LET'S DO THIS!

.

But I'd happily pay and I can't! Doesn't sound like he gets his worth at all confused

Wouldn't it be better to do the concert, then put it on a web site somewhere for everyone to buy if they want, rather than restricting sales to people that go to the show?

RIP sad
