But I can hum it so it must be memorable. It has a pattern that ebbs and flows. All solos should do that. Hence why I love Flying in a Blue Dream so much.

I believe the song "Batdance" is a ridiculous piece of crap that was a clear cashgrab. I can't even think of the solo you're referring to; "Batdance" is probably my least-listened to track of his entire catalog.

So there's that.

The solo is cut from the shortened version of the song, so that probably explains it.

You're so glam, every time I see you I wanna slam!

Doesn't go together....Prince & a bad guitar solo? That is his main instrument.

Actually, his "main" instrument is piano.

Agree. His musicianship is more evident on piano.

He can be great on guitar, but he's overrated as improviser and can be prone to clumsily stringing blues cliches together. Always passionate though and amazing use of effects.

But he does have terrible solos ,Fly Away from Rave dvd is beyond terrible

"Fly Away" is not a Prince song so it doesn't count. Its A Lenny song(who I just saw @ The Image Awards)

Oh good, glad someone's said this. Perhaps now we can put that overated peformance of While My Guitar Gently Weeps to bed and let it never be mentioned again. After all it doesn't count as it's a cover.

Plz! that was the RRHOF. That is different because he slayed all the guitarist on stage with him, 2 the point where it was obvious they were ignoring him. Except 4 Tom Petty's son who was in awe of him..

I think you mean George Harrison's son, who the tribute was for. And from what I understand all the musicians liked Prince, there wasn't any ignoring. They gave him a spotlight and the climactic solo. That's not ignoring. People seem to mistake Tom Petty's guitar face as a reaction to Prince.

Yeah I don't see where this "ignoring Prince" basis came from...

Well the worst as in stupid....

When Prince had everyone in the business watching with his Emanicpation Promotion when BET,MTV & Vh1 all had him LIVE

What does Prince do... He "Lip Syncs" the fuckin guitar!?!?eek mad

He pretended to play live from a pre-recorded track

Dumb!

yeah, i'm pretty sure the computer blue solo was the same deal during live performances... even in the movie, who's supposed to be playing the fast part? It's certainly not Prince... but it's not clear that wendy's playing it either because her hands are mostly obscured by the simulated bij...

Man what are you talking about? The fast part is played in unis live by Prince and Wendy. You can hear 2 guitars playing it after that part Prince plays even faster guitar part before seguing into Fathers Song portion of the song.

Well, the performances in Purple Rain are of course overdubbed with the polished studio tracks. On computer blue it's most obvious because during the fast part where Wendy is going down on Prince, Prince's fretboard fingers are hardly moving. And at one point he even takes his strumming hand off the guitar to touch Wendy's cheek, during the solo. Wendy's fingers are moving enough to MAYBE be playing the part, but it's not clear.

Then on the one live performance bootleg vid I saw from the Purple Rain tour, they played computer blue with the same simulated blow job routine. I remember the guitar part sounding suspiciously similar to the studio recording, and both Prince's and Wendy's hands were conveniently obscured by the stage antics. It's been a while, so I could be wrong, but that's what I remember.

EDIT
So i watched the live video again and the solo doesn't sound like the recording, but i still think something weird is going on there...

Umm can someone please explain to a guitarist why the RAVE She's Always In My Hair and FlyAway guitar solos from Prince were bad? I'd really like to know as I thought they were decent.

I personally like the RAVE concert....the only issue I have with it is the constant camera switches that spoil the whole thing IMO.

I am in awe everytime Prince plays his guitar....and his RRHOF solo was amazing. Dhani was amazed by Prince....I really Hope Dhani includes Prince's guitars in his new app.

Cheers

I hate when Junior Vasquez touched any of the Prince stuff. Completely boring remixes there. Vasquez is a bore! I HATE house music.

I hate to be mean, but I agree with you 100%. I hate what Vasquez did to Prince's songs because I hate house music also.

As for good and bad solos, I can't think of any that I dislike, and I am shocked by some of the ones listed. "She's Always in My Hair" studio or live solos still make the hair on the back of neck stand. As with any artist sometimes the phrasings will sound quite similar, and I'll think, "That kinda sounds like _________," but I can't think of any that I just don't like. Sorry to be so off topic, but I just had to "amen" the Junior Vasquez comment above.

They're not "bad", by any stetch - they're perhaps a little safe and not the most jaw-dropping thing that Prince has ever played, but some don't understand that sometimes less is more. It wouldn't be musically interesting if every single solo was a fret-shredding loon fest, but that's what some people want. And, anyway, just listen to what Kravitz does in those songs - its nowhere near as good as what Prince does, Lenny even looks to be struggling (although, I'm sure he's just trying to push himself in front of Prince). And they're HIS songs! I don't think Prince does it deliberately, but he completely upstages him on the guitar-playing front, but its just that P's playing is so much more natural - it just flows.

Even when Prince's playing is not that technical (or, dare I say it, even simple), Prince's note-choice, spacing and intonation is always damn-near spot on for me. He communicates with the guitar like very few other players (and is why he gets so much respect from all the other top guitarists in the game).

The solo in "Blues Medley" (specifically in Purple House), is fantastic.

It is not true that we want shread fast to consider it a legitimite guitar solo. I just wanna hear class and suptity. On Rave 2000dvd something was off with Prince's guitar playing,he even did 4 or 5 mistakes during Purple Rain. Check She"s Always in My Hair Paisley Park celebration. He nails that solo In a much better fashion compared to Attrocius Rave version.Red House rave version is very weak.Guitar intro is nice but after that everything goes wrong.it clearly shows Prince don't have idea where to go with the solo.if you want to hear a kick ass version of Red House check the Paris New Morning 1986 version.it's amazing .

Thanks for your reply mate agree 100%. I don't know why people on here are saying those solos are bad.

My personal opinion on Prince's guitar solos are that he plays with alot of soul and passion and he changes it up a bit and always trys something new.

Guitarists like Eric Clapton and Santana who I both love seem very predictable and boring to me. When you hear one of their songs you can basically predict what they are going to play in their solos...even their new songs solos sound basically the same.

Prince changes it up quite a bit. Just my opinion.

Not sure why some people bagged The Rainbow Children album...to me that album is my favorite Prince album...the musicianship and production is top notch....I think some people let the religious nature of the album cloud their judgement on how awesome that album is.
