i bought his latest album and i like it....its not amazing or anything...i just like the vibe he has with the retro sound and his voice is great....he isnt prince or ever will be...he doesnt have the vision that prince has....or had depending on how you view prince's recent work....but lenny is good for what he does...

.

dont think its fair to compare them...its like terence trent d'arby.....he has some great work and has a fantastic voice but you cant compare terence to prince either...

Lenny's recent work overall is better than Prince's. Prince hasn't had good album since 3121

i would disagree with that...lotusflower single disc is better than anything lenny has put out since his first couple of albums...prince has far more variation in his music than lenny...you know what you are getting with lenny..and its good...but...as i said ...lenny doesnt have the musical vision that prince has..you really never know what you are going to get with prince..

I'd say prince's latest good one was long before this. I'm thinking Emancipation, which was only 1/3rd good at that. To be fair, 20Ten was "pretty okay"

I am not a Lenny Kravitz fan. Lenny fails to convince he is a genuine musician. But he is a fucking poseur. His main gift resides in his art of faking himself as a musician. He is to musicianship what Richard Gere is to acting.

You can tell about Prince's Future , but his Past is utterly unpredictable

Well Prince is more creative and unpredictable and I respect that about him, and I don't think Lenny is original, but he really has an ear for writin good hooks and melodies, and I really miss that from Prince now.

Nonsense. Lenny isn't faking anything, he's copying everything. Even he admits this now. He takes all the styles of music he grew up with and mashes them into something that sounds familiar without being an note for note rip-off. Also, as I've said before, Lenny's great gift is being able to hear where every instrument should be in the mix and what it should be doing. He's a great arranger, but he's only a good player. That's why he's kept his lead guitar player around for almost 20 years.

Lyrically though, he's lacking. Sometimes terribly so.

There is no need to compare Prince and Lenny, because they aren't the same thing. Lenny has never tried to be Prince, look like Prince, sound like Prince, etc. Honestly, I always thought that might be part of what Prince liked about him.

cerebus: I thought that was common knowledge, I know critics have said it since the 90's and everytime I heard his stuff, I felt like I had heard it in another lifetime or something lol but he still writes good hooks and makes classic material. I could think of at least 2-3 songs when listening to a lenny song, he soaks up his influences well

bill: YEAHHHH!! It would look like LoveSexy and Baptism lol

I liked Lenny Henry when I was a kid. His ex wife's funnier. In essence, she's the funniest thing he's ever done

Come on, he's not that bad! I think he's really talented...is he gifted like Prince? Not at all but most aren't and that's why most of us here love Prince right? I think he's a genuine musician who sticks to what he knows (as entertaining and/or limiting as this may be). I think part of the reason he appeals to his fans (including myself) is that he's a hippie, rock and roll, genuine rocker and a black rocker at that which is just freaking rare at this stage since crap-hop has ruined/taken over black music.

I'm not a musician so I can't speak about his skills in that area, but I've seen him in concert several times and I was really surprised that he can actually sing, he sounds great live. Gotta also admit that his fanbase is probably mostly women (I'd say about 60/40) so he plays up his sex appeal very well in a way that it never looks like he has to try very hard, I think that is what has given him such longevity in the industry...

IMO: I don't think that their work is comparable.

Lenny has got his own style now, often some notes come back and forth and he's quickly recognisable.

Prince is a kind who's always experimenting new sounds unheard ones,

I like Lenny's new album, but it's not breathtaking!

Prince knows music better than lenny, Lenny needs something, to manage better the notes.

Black Sweat is a really funky song. That was 5-6 years ago. While I will admit I haven't heard new Lenny since Baptism other than the single he puts out at the time, Lenny's albums are like someone said very you know what you're going to get. Prince is Prince. He'll venture into this area and that and you never really know what it's gonna sound like next. Although I do agree with you that EVERY album since Musicology has had WAY too much production and reverb on it for my taste, there's always at least 1 gem lying hidden on his current albums. Black Sweat. Pure Funk.

Y'all need to go to YouTube.

Type in the search window "What Do You Want From Me Lenny Bonus".

Play the first video on the list.

And crank up the volume.
