That's why he don't listen to Thriller. It's interesting to note PR is the only Prince album to do over 10 million and it's one of the few albums he DON'T listen to...yet he DOES listen to... good God... this guy confuses me!

It doesn't make any difference if an album in general has sold ten copies or ten million -- it has nothing at all to do with the quality .. and the music alone from the Purple Rain era is fucking fantastic in my opinion

I agree with this assessment because Nikki and Computer Blue are def not mainstream and you hit the nail on the head with D&P. Talk about a most high sell out FOR the mainstream. Yes he somewhat changed his sound and content with Rain but his vision was still there, as well as the out there-ness of it that was Prince. D&P could have been made by David Foster and Friends inho.

Your thread title alludes to the music not that it "brought" him to the mainstream. Especially since even if it was one of the most experiemntal pieces of music ala' lest's say Capt Beefheart, what difference would it make if the masses woke up and jumped on as a fan? However, since you just explained it more thoroughly and differently, I see what you mean. Its like after PR, everybody knew who he was/was into him. Although I think that began with 1999, Purple Rain it really brought folks on board.

I don't see how that's contradictory. You can absolutely recognize that "Purple Rain" is well-crafted and feel it's the better disc even if it isn't your own first choice as far as Prince music goes. To be honest I somewhat agree with Tyler on this. I think that out of Thriller and Purple Rain, PR is the better one by far, but I personally don't listen to it because I'm bored by it, I've heard it way too many times, and it's essentially "Prince-Lite", or Prince watered down for the masses.

I'm guessing because I was born in that year and I loved the era surrounding it, I can't say it's "Prince-lite". I just don't see it that way.

Admittedly "Billie Jean is a fucking amazing song, but hearing it constantly over the years killed off any appreciation I had for it, and I actually think "Beat It" is overrated and was never really that good to begin with, although I can appreciate and respect the positive message in the song itself.

We have to admit (for those that were there) "1999" opened the floodgates for what was about to happen. MTV, radio and the media started to question and jump on the 'purple jockstrap'. Everything happened at the right time. P had a winning formula & he couldn't lose.

P has even said it himself in countless interviews. He saw some people in the 1984-85 audience that he had never seen before..and he knew he would never see again once the hype died down.

As much as I love the soundtrack, I can't listen to it. Never bought it on CD or cassette either.

I think the last time I listened to it was the day "A.T.W.I.A.D" came out. It's been packed away

since (WITH the poster).
