Oh well that settles it, it must be true.

Yeah, i don't know which book is referred to with that quote, but it's not in this autobiography below

[img:$uid]http://yanko.lib.ru/books/bio/miles.files/image001.jpg[/img:$uid]

Miles describes Prince (especially on the pages 384-386) but not any traceable quote with the exact

words that he and his father are crazy, hence Prince's father isn't mentioned at all in that Miles bio.

So what is his main problem? (current and historic)

Thanks for the Miles bio reference; I'll try to check that when I get home. (yes I do have both bios)

Very interesting article that should shed some light on this...topic, for those who take the time to read and absorb.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/scott-barry-kaufman/creative-people_b_829563.html

Thanks for posting this - very interesting read.

Absolutely I believe that creative people are largely misunderstood, primarily because those that haven't developed that side of themselves are consistently (though usually inadvertently) trying to squish them into boxes that were never designed to contain them, thus resulting in contradictions about introversion/extroversion all the way up to questions as to one's mental health and/or stability.

right. I have always thought that actors, musicians etc who are that gifted that they reach the pinnacle of their art/craft are "special". That can be good and bad. To me the more gifted a person is, the more unusual they are "in real life". That is the very thing that gives them that extra spark, that thing that makes the stand out. There are 2 sides (positive and negative) to that extra spark.... the positive side everyone praises, and the negative side is so bad that behavior disintergrates into Charlie Sheen-like behavior. Successful creative genuises have learned to walk the fine line. They are able to remain special and stand out without becoming self destructing.

wtf... it is quite NORMAL to have health issues, I am told 1 out of 3 has these kind of "troubles" once or more in their lifetime,

I am also told it is quite NORMAL going to see a shrink, (psycologue, spelled?), just to be wiser on the personal level.

I have tried that myself, and I can recommend it.

If Prince had mental issues I wouldn't be too concerned, it is after all quite NORMAL, life goes up and down, and we are all human beings, crisis happens in life for everyone.

Just my 2 cents on "Prince and mental issues" >>> twocents

nothing to worry about IMO..... wink

I do think having issues and going to a shrink every now and then is seen defferently than having issues and needing therapy on a more structural basis (if the patient would recognise the problem).

I do think it's the latter case that we're asking about here.

As a HUGE fan of Prince, and as someone who has many friends that are musicians, the answer is clear and easy.

Yes.

Of course he has mental issues. Anyone who seeks fame and attention at that level is crazy by normal standards. Most people would be terrified of being on stage in front of tens of thousands at a time, or of the scrutiny of being in the public eye.

The "mental health issues" that Prince has are actually why we all like him. He's got something to prove and thankfully we've all been able to witness some of it.

Anyone who knows they're "special" is crazy until they can prove it.

We have many people suffering from this in the org artist community. Think I'm wrong? Take a look and listen. No disrespect on them though. They think they're special and just haven't proven they're right yet. There's a nice mix actually, there are a few talented ones and a boatload of deluded ones too. They all happen to share the same mindset though. They know they're "special" as in they have something that most people don't: the desire to receive attention and recognition for their talents/looks/writing/whatever.

Somewhere there are a few people that have skills that may match what Prince can do, but they're drunk in the street or locked up and medicated. There's a fine line between celebrity and insanity.

you make some great points, which I, as a musician can verify. People that seek that kind of adulation are unbalanced in one way or another. I would say I am too. But I really don't agree that there is not a lot of special talent out here, I see and hear it all the time. Talent though is negligible, it really means nothing, especially in the pop field. Also, as long as I've been doing this, the one thing I know that is hard for everyone is making multiple things work out at the right time, that's just the bitch of the bunch right there. The music business is so unstructured and sloppy and it's so goddamned hard to get anyone to do anything without begging and pleading that a guy like Prince should be thankful that he was surrounded by the early people he was. I mean the enthusiastic musicians as well as the always sheisty but necessary business people. He was given an unprecedented record deal with no track record and although he could play pretty good, no one could guess or know how he would develop in the next 10 years. So, although some in his circle would disagree, yes I think he's a genius but the talent part of the equation is not quite as weighty as most people would think. Like I said, i see some mindblowing shit here in seattle, most likely, they won't get anywhere ever. Only so much room for the talent, it becomes a game of lotto after a point.

Well, just various things I've read on here and in different publications; like, if he DID lock Sinead O'Conner in a closet- I've had beef with people but I've never locked another in a closet- I think I also read that he threatened to beat her up- Not normal behavior for a man to a woman-

In the song Papa, Prince discusses being locked in a closet. This song came out after the above incident was reported.

"One day, the budding musician told Erickson that his home life was troubled, and that his stepdad had sometimes locked him in a room for hours. There was a piano in the room, and Prince taught himself to play, said Erickson."

from here:
http://www.startribune.co...27586.html

I think there are a lot of Prince songs that point to someone dealing wtih an issue. Of course in his early days we can attribute some ideas to his youth.

I know someone who was once held hostage by Prince at Paisly Park because Prince thought they took something. Later the police were called and the police officer told this person they could file a civil suit against Prince for kidnapping. So the above story is not suprising if true. Prince does not seem to believe the law applies to him at times.

Other strange things I have witnessed:

Singing while laying down on the stage in mid 90's. Maybe he gets really shy because of some issue and this is how he overcomes it. I heard when he recorded his first album he did this as well (with the lights down).

Inviting everyone to Paisly Park for a late night gig then only allowing women in.

And I am sure with more thought I can recall other things.

I mean, this is the guy who wrote "Pussy Control" and "Bob George" (which is crazy violent) and talked about f&%$ing his sister. And then the paranoid stuff, Chemtrails, and just his behavior in general, sometimes he seems a little nuts. I will research that article I'm referring to and try to post it.

Charlie Sheen's behavior is that of bi polar. And perhaps thats what Prince may have. I am no Dr. But I know bi polar people and they have similiarities. Maybe that's what his ex wife was refering to. His bi polar tendencies. He could seek help, maybe he is to stubborn to do so. But it is treatable.

It was interesting hearing about a woman who a few years ago accused Prince of playing sex games and different rooms they would visit. Then you listen to the long version of Computer Blue and he talks about rooms. Lots of these things people have said about him in public, can be traced back to his music. Released or not.

Also the mental telethapy rumor has existed since Kim Basinger and it keeps coming up over and over with ex girlfriends.

As far as chemtrails, the jury is still out on this. I don't believe, nor do I disbelieve. They actually use to do this in the area I live as part of a forest managment program back in the 50's to control or improve deer population. Has this expanded to other methods? Like I said, I am not sure so I remain neurtal until more information is obtained.

Prince has common sense, and ANY person that comes from nothing to being a multi-millionaire is driven, not crazy. Being a successful artist would make him savvy and talented, not crazy. Crazy people end up a hot mess in time, Prince has held hit shit together for years... even conned many dumbasses here out of 77 bucks to sign up for a website. lol

I wouldn't consider Prince crazy at all. Heck he usually was fucking several women at one time and made them all do his bidding. That's a damned pimp... he isn't crazy, he knows exactly what he wants to do.

I hope Mani does talk more about her time with Prince. Maybe she can elaborate on what she meant.

Mani is not the only ex girllfriend that has spoken of Prince's bizarre behavior.

People can be sucessful with mental issues. Charlie Sheen is rich and scuessful. Your telling me he doesn't have issues? And thus, from Mani's post came the existence of this thread. And she has lived with Prince and knows him better than any of us that have not.

Food for thought: This thread was started yesterday and already has 2500 views. If people were not thinking this, then why are they viewing it?

[Edited 3/7/11 9:37am]

Did I say Charlie Sheen didn't have issues or that rich people can't?

I understand why some people want to find out from Mani about their relationship but I don't necessarily agree with it. Compared to many celebrities Prince has a clean record and Mani, if she had been mature enough at the time (and Prince, wiser in decision making) she would have realised, that a rebound relationship, particularly after all that was going down with Mayte and Warner, at the time, was not really a good idea.

After all these years, and being in love and engaged to be married , I still find it surprising that she would want to take a dig. Then? Sure, but now? Suspect. What are the motivating factors?

As for the thread view. People view it because they are by nature attracted to sensation and Prince having mental issues would be quite a sensation don't you think?

And that Prince has displayed bizarre behaviour at times? Well who hasn't? Does that make his bizaare behaviour more important or worse than someone elses, just because he's famous and people report on it? I don't think so.

I have to agree, compared to most people in the business, Prince is actually quite sane! He's kept himself out of trouble and that's obviously hard for celebs. I think Prince has done good to keep himself and his private life out of the news for the most part. Most of what's out there is pure speculation on fans parts.

Now THERE is the answer to the OP question. Prince is a smart, genius man, he knows exactly what he is doing. And if intelligence and wisdom equals insanity, then I'll be insane! The only people that call Prince and others crazy, are the ones suffereing themselves and they somehow want others to be in the same category. Misery loves company!

There is a big difference in nurture vs. nature. What Prince is suffereing from is nurturing, not anything nature has bestowed on him. The man is a genius, he has created a successful career for himself, and he is acting just the way the entertainment industry wants him to act.

So he is "arrogant." Who wouldn't be if they had millions of fans and even other celebs falling all over themselves for you?

So he's "private." What sane celeb wouldn't be if they wanted to live a private life and not have the ridiculous papparazzi in their business all the time?

So he is "shy." Since when was shyness a mental illness? People are shy, some aren't, that has nothing to do with anything except different personalities.

So he writes "weird lyrics." Since when was a creative imagination a sign of mental illness (they encourage this kind of stuff in school)?

So I see NOTHING that points to Prince having a mental illness. If we point to certain events like the Sunday interview or the chemtrails talk, we can attribute that to being silly (during the interview Mayte was giggling the entire time!) which is not a sign of mental illness, and "thinking out of the box" (chemtrails, which are theorized by MANY people, not just Prince) which is how theories start and are very vital to our society and moving forward.

Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

Not to be negative, but did he donate to charity because it's tax time and it's coming out in the end either way?

I remember once seeing Shelia E on Larry King talking about one of her charity's (I'm sure you guys saw this at least some of you- it was around 2006) it was for abused children or something and she was mentioning all of her celebrity friends who she was so proud of for stepping up and helping her with this charity and donating money- she mentioned alot of "Prince associated people" and I kept waiting to see if she mentioned Prince, but she never did.

I just don't see it as Mani's "insight." I see it as her immaturely taking a stab at Prince to get some attention. She hasn't been with him in years and now, after all this time, thinks she can talk about him like she knows him? Please! Had she said it back in the day, then it would have been thought provoking. But now, she just looks like a jealous ex. I mean, wouldn't it be the same thing if Prince had said this about her?

Afterall, Prince has a lovely new GF, is making quite a mark with his recent W2A tour, and is just all over the place right now. Not to mention, there could be some truth to Prince uninviting her and EB from some event or however it went. Charlie Sheen isn't suffering from a mental breakdown, he is a drug addict, 2 different things! Mani knows alot of her FB friends are Prince fans, she just wanted to get some attention on her and EB and off of Prince and Misty.

Of course Mani could have just been making a joke at Prince's expense and not meant anything by it. Who knows, I just think it was poor taste and not to be taken seriously at all. Especially if that is what people are basing their opinion on.

LOL I commend him too, its great he's giving to charity. I guess he's pulling a "robin hood." Giving the money the lawyer's claim he owes them to needy children. Clever move on his part, will it work to make him look like "a saint?" IDK!!

Many said that Miles was an ill-tempered man. I think not. People would have you believe anything negative about an artist... especially if he is a successful African American man.

They talked shit about Miles, James Brown, Micheal, Berry Gordy, Lionel... the list goes on and on.

America has a fond tradition of demonizing its own... even killing its own. Not just a race thing either, many behave like crabs in a barrel when it comes to success and wealth. Sometimes a black man isn't accepted unless he's mixed race or wearing a dress.

Things are changing, but the change is long over due and can't come fast enough.

So...This thread idea was gotten from a woman who went from Prince to Eric Benet and just happens to post jabs at Prince on her FB page and you ask if Prince has the mental health issues lol

Ahh, have you been reading the posts here and in the news? I think this thread was inpired by Mani and she was inspired by recent Charlie Sheen events to post it (I guess). But it's only icying on the cake.
