Canceled show a super mess

Last Updated: 2:16 AM, February 5, 2011

Posted: 2:03 AM, February 5, 2011

Brutal weather in Dallas battered the Super Bowl festivities, but the biggest fiasco was the Prince concert scheduled for last night and canceled at the last minute.

The superstar was due to perform at the Hotel Intercontinental along with Erykah Badu and others, with tickets selling for $1,500 each. But organizers called it off just an hour before it was to start, climaxing a flurry of conflicting statements about the show being canceled, resurrected and canceled again.

"We are extremely disappointed that the organizers, the Meridian Entertainment Group and the River Alexander Group . . . were unable to bring Prince and his band to Dallas on Feb. 4," said Prince's manager, Kiran Sharma, in a statement last night.

"Our understanding is that they lost their investors and were not able to adequately fund and produce the event. Prince was looking forward to performing in support of the Goss-Michael Foundation."

According to sources, the problem started when the River group didn't cover Prince or his band's travel costs or the rental of concert equipment. "They kept saying they'd cover the costs after they had the money from ticket sales, but they never could come up with the cash," said one source.

The foundation, which benefits art education, put out a press release yesterday afternoon saying the concert was canceled, and blamed River Alexander Group for being "unable to fund and produce the evening." A few minutes later, the charity reversed itself, saying, "Circumstances have changed and the event featuring Prince WILL take place . . . Prince has arrived in Dallas and will perform this evening." But at 6:30 last night, a fed-up Prince personally canceled.

A source at concert promoter Black Book told us yesterday the show might have been initially canceled because Prince and his group's flight was delayed by bad weather, but that they made it in time for a sound check. But Prince's rep told us he never made it to Dallas at all.

what a swirl of conflicting statements!!!!!1falloff

Again, if he had business people handling his affairs, it wouldn't have gotten to this point. Someone would have made sure this was handled before the day of the event.

What does Prince's business people have to do with an organization that couldn't pay it's employees? Again, taking such a simplistic take on this is silly...In the past, Prince has indeed fucked up in some of these instances (Croake Parks *sp* comes to mind)....But this one aint the case...By a long shot..

What you don't seem to understand is Prince, just like security, Badu, the union workers, and the light people, was hired by the organization to be a part of the show...And when the money became shakey, there was no show....This is business 101...

Some people seem to be going at Prince because of his past issues...I'm sorry...But I don't care about such things...I just look at the facts that are presented to me...

[Edited 2/6/11 7:05am]

If you were looking at facts, you'd acknowledge that something like this wouldn't happen to a Bruce Springsteen or a Janet Jackson, because they would have a staff of people making sure everything was on the up & up and everyone was paid.

It would definitely not have been a last minute cancellation. It should have been cancelled much sooner, if it was really a matter of people not getting paid or the location not being up to standards.

That all should have been checked out the day the location was changed.

I can keep repeating myself, and you can too, but it doesn't change the fact that a Prince show for 'charity' was cancelled at the last minute and it reflects badly on him no matter who we choose to blame. The slant the local news has taken on it is that Prince didn't let anyone know he was cancelling or why, and some 'poor students' who were supposed to get a chance to perform were just left waiting for hours with no word.

I'm not making this shit up.

It would have never gotten to this point if people were checking and double checking everything prior to the day of the show.

In the words of Billy Sparks 'This is a business, you ain't too far gone to see that.'

Good point Babynoz. But the event organizers should have cancelled the event, since they knew ahead of time, that tix sales were low and they didn't have the money to cover expenses for the artist and his band, that they made an agreement to pay. This would have saved a lot of trouble for everyone, including the customers that paid to attend the event.

Okay. I've changed my mind. Once again POOR PRINCE was victimized.

I see your point.

That poor guy can't get a break.

He's right to wait until the last possible minute and cancel a gig that was poorly organized from the outset.

The media ISN'T blaming him, I imagined all that.

He's so organized and everything he does is so well thought out, this incident is completely isolated and out of character where he's concerned.

He's an amazing businessman and did just what any other mega-star would have done in his position.

Bravo Prince.

You win.

Happy now?

Yank it out of rotation as soon as they bumped up their listeners? lol The sad thing is they had to pretend the song they were given was a jewel to promote. sad

Yeah, that's why I said "in the future".

The organizers were clearly out of their league as I explained in my other post. The bottom line is that they failed to raise the funds to cover the event itself, much less having anything left over to donate. It also appears that they were not truthful up to the last minute and are still not being entirely truthful about what happened.

This debacle is not on Prince IMO, but I still think that going forward, it makes sense to do some research on any group he enters into a business arrangement with, especially when his name is the main draw.

Haterina, I think Joyce must have mis-spoken or was mis-quoted on that quote because she said in the original cancellation on Friday that the PROMOTER River Alexander Group approached them to be the beneficiary.

In a nutshell:

1. This was NOT a charity event. It was primarily a FOR PROFIT concert by an organizer who USED the charity's name as a FRONT promising to give them a SMALL portion of the proceeds from the show. The foundation had nothing to do with the planning and neither did Prince.

2. The River Alexander Group is a fly by night production company that was ONLY incorporated in the state of Texas a few days AFTER the concert was announced. The "manager" of the company is a rooty poot muhhfucka named Chris Arnold who was the sports reporter for the local hip-hop radio station and is currently the sideline reporter at the local Mavericks basketball game. Chris is a huge Prince fan but has ZERO experience doing this type of thing.

3. Prince was at the hotel, sitting in his limo, waiting for word that they had his money and that the place was ready to go. Of course, neither occurred so no show. Chris Arnold himself said Prince was there after announcing the cancellation. My peeps saw the two white limos, one of which EB came out of, and the other that Prince was in.

4. Another reason there was no show was because the hotel was ALSO not paid for the facilities, food, alcohol, equipment, etc. Hotel reps told the organizers that if they didn't get paid they were pulling the plug on it, which is I think the REAL reason there was no performance. Even if EB and Prince were willing to perform, the hotel was not having it because they had not been paid. They apparently stationed employees to block people's access into the ballroom.

5. Performers almost NEVER peform for free at ANY charity event even when it's really for charity. They also commonly charge their OWN organizations back for their expenses. Furthermore, I don't think George has anything to do with this foundation. This is really Kenny and his mother's deal and they continue to use George's name. I attend most of the Goss-Michael gallery events and it's been a long time since I've seen George at anything.

Prince's Super Bowl conce...rescinded

The high-dollar soiree featuring Prince scheduled for Friday night was been canceed.

A statement released by Joyce Goss, Executive Director, The Goss-Michael Foundation stated: "We are extremely disappointed that theEvent featuring Prince, scheduled for Friday, February 4, at the Intercontinental Hotel, has been canceled. It is our understanding that River Alexander Group, the event organizer, was unable to fund and produce the evening. The organizer came to The Goss-Michael Foundation, invited us to be the beneficiary and receive some of the proceeds which would have gone to our high school scholarship program."

A few hours later, the foundation released this.

"Circumstances have changed and TheEvent featuring Prince WILL take place this evening. The previous statement is rescinded. Prince has arrived in Dallas and will perform this evening."

The price for admission to the concert was $1,500 for a single ticket that included general admission, open bar and food stations.

If that was the case, then there's your problem. CA obviously is no Don King when it comes to promotion. But because of P's notoriety, the media's placing some, if not all the blame at his doorsteps.

Some of these issues have been discussed at length in other threads in the Concerts forum, including the one linked by SCNDLS:

http://prince.org/msg/12/...?&pg=3

As a ticket holder, what I found most appalling were the misrepresentations from the organizers right up until (and even after) the cancellation. The roads were very icy the night of the event, and local authorities had been warning people all week to stay off the roads. Despite this, I was about to head up to Addison when one of the orgers (CallMeCarrie) who was volunteering at the event notified us that the event had been cancelled. We got no official announcement of cancellation from the organizers, who had previously announced a cancellation only to rescind that notice. I called the Hotel InterContinental after the concert was supposed to have started, and the first woman to answer the phone told me that the concert was still on. I didn't believe her and asked to talk to someone else, who then told me it was cancelled. The first public confirmations of the cancellation came from the Dallas Morning News and WFAA-TV, not the organizers. In fact, as I write this I still have not received an official notice of cancellation from the organizers.

I was lucky that, thanks to CallMeCarrie, I got word of the cancellation in time to avoid the drive to the hotel. I feel very sorry for those who braved the icy roads to get to the event only to be abruptly told that it was cancelled. I am even more sorry for the volunteers who helped set up the event, and most of all for the scholarship recipients who flew in at their own expense to open for Prince.

We can argue forever about whose fault this was, but it was clearly a disaster, and there were signs well ahead of time that it was not going to work out as planned.

The bolded part is EXACTLY why I wasn't there. My connect told me to come on down that I'd be in VIP and all that. I got dressed, left the house and started heading that way. About 3 blocks from my house while driving only 20 mph, I changed lanes, hit a patch of ice, and did a 180 on the street and ended up facing oncoming traffic. With that, I decided to bring my ass back home. Imagine if I'd made it all the way there, only to find the concert cancelled, and then had an accident on the way back home. I tell ya, somebody woulda got they ass beat.

I've been trying to link to the other posts in the Concerts forum, but an interview with Chaka Khan keeps popping up instead. Sorry--don't know how to fix that.

Apparently, neither does the Org confused

You have to copy and paste the link into the browser.

[Edited 2/6/11 9:10am]

Yeah, that's why I said "in the future".

The organizers were clearly out of their league as I explained in my other post. The bottom line is that they failed to raise the funds to cover the event itself, much less having anything left over to donate. It also appears that they were not truthful up to the last minute and are still not being entirely truthful about what happened.

This debacle is not on Prince IMO, but I still think that going forward, it makes sense to do some research on any group he enters into a business arrangement, with especially when his name is the main draw.

nod I agree with you on that, and the point that the event organizers may not have been truthful about the information they were giving Prince's team, leading up to hours before the event was to take place. I'm not at all surprised that many would blame the artist for what went wrong, because of his name being attached as the main performer. I also agree with you that maybe his business manager/team should have done more extensive research on the organizers of the event. As one orger "Scndls" noted in another thread in the Concerts forum that Chris Arnold incorporated his company just a few days after he announced the event.

For what it's worth, at least those that paid to attend the event, will get a refund for the tickets they purchased.

Let's just chalk it up to yet another last minute cancellation and call it a day, folks.

At the point, it shouldn't surprise anyone. Does it really matters who is to blame?

It happened.....

You have to put url before the thread link, and then the /url with the backslash after the thread link, in order to get the right thread link to post on any forum here, but make sure you enclose both urls with brackets [ ] before posting or you will not get the right link to post.

lol I also noticed some mods didn't know how to redirect a link as well. Since Ben did the changes on this site, it takes extra steps to do certain functions now. Kind of feel like instead of improvements, he took it a few steps backwards as far as making it easier to post certain ways. The site could use a few improvements.

That's the bottom line, right there. Regardless to what a bunch of people on a Prince fan site, myself included, who weren't there or don't have anything to do with it, may think or feel about who is or is not, at fault.

There were many real people who invested their time, money and energy...that got royally shafted!

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

That was three days before the concert. Hard to say that no one could have anticipated the problems.

I dont know anything about the promotion or events regarding this performance but you definitely cant belive everything you read

1) I find it hard to believe the band was there but not Prince, I highly doubt Prince would send his band to TX for a non performance and send them back to NYC knowing they have a big NYC show tomorrow

2) this performance was probably cancelled long ago but the promoter announced the cancellation last minute just to get ppl to show up for whatever event or performance is substituting it

3) after Prince's amazing Superbowl performance in my opinion he no longer should do any superbowl linked performances, he left a huge mark , no need to do anything else

4) In my opinion Prince and his lawyers should be over this no-show madness and wouldnt purposedly involve themselves in another episode, just my opinion, all fingers should be pointed at THE PROMOTER - not Prince

5) dont believe everything you read, this fiasco sounds like it was made up and planned, anything for press

I blame the event organizers who first announced the event was cancelled, then later said it was on again. First of all, you don't announce an event is cancelled, then turn around and say it's on again. That's tacky as hell and playing with people's money and time.

They should have just left things alone, and stuck with the first cancelled announcement, and all the other fiasco that followed could have been avoided. Has any of the people reporting the news on this heard anything from Chris Arnold yet or is Chris still avoiding the press about his lack of handling the event or is he pushing all the blame on Prince?
