hhhhdmt

highlights from the album are Joy in repitition, The Question of u and thieves in the temple.

On the other hand, all those time songs are unnecessary and dont belong on a prince album

I will never understand why songs lime Girl o My Dreams and Pink Cashmere were left off when they are far superior to most of the album.

When you think about other great projects that had a much shorter life before he got bored of them or shelved them. The idea of 'Graffiti Bridge' must've been relatively important for Prince at the time. It's kind of like a more internal version of the utopian Paisley Park idea.

Although the whole movie and era is a bit of a tragedy, I still find the whole project really interesting because of it's evolution and how long Prince had the project on the backburner. I like deconstructing the threads that make up GB, nitpicking to see how it all ended up as that glorious technicolor hot mess we all love to hate.

Like the battle of the bands idea comes from 'The Dawn', and the PR sequel idea was tacked on at the end to rustle up interest, and then the Time come on board, which finishes off Corporate World, the music is from all over the place, tons of old stuff revamped, how GB and Rave were intertwined, and the ever changing casting of Ruthie/Aura depending on who happened to be sucking the purple party stick at that time, etc.

I know what you mean, I post a piece from the 1985 Prince talks interview, where I believe he was talking about the GB film concept, it seems it might have been an Idea even prior to that... Sometimes I wonder if the 2nd coming was a part of that.

Trying to go to deep with a film full of non actors couldn't cut it. Purple Rain with it's twists and turns the 'reality' of most of the people in the film. The tragic parts of generational abuse and turmoil, forgiveness, isolation, artist/musician struggles, love & sex... PR was a very deep film

On a purely shallow level, I've been saying for years that this was the era when Prince looked the hottest.

New Power Generation

Lay down your funky weapon (Whoo!)
Yeah y'all, here we go
Pumpin' the big noise in the 90s

Pardon me 4 livin' but this is my world 2
I can't help if what's cool 2 us might be strange 2 U
Pardon me 4 breathin', can we borrow some of your air?
The problem with U and your kind is U don't know love is there

CHORUS:
Lay down your funky weapon, come join us on the floor
Makin' love and music's the only things worth fighting 4
We are the New Power Generation - we wanna change the world
The only thing that's in our way is U, ooh
Your old fashioned music, your old ideas
We're sick and tired of U telling us what 2 do, ooh

Pardon me 4 thinkin' but there's something under my hair
I bet (maybe) U thought the lights were on but no one's livin' there
U think that if U tell enough lies they will see the truth
I hope they bury your old ideas the same time they bury U

CHORUS
(Oh yeah)
(Oh)
(U, U)

We are the new (huh!)
We are the new {x2}
Makin' love and music
New Power, (huh!) we stand

Pardon us 4 caring, we didn't know it was against the rules (Shout it out)
If we only wanna love one another then tell me now, who's the fool? (Tell me, tell me)
No father, no mother, no sister, no brother, nobody can make me stop
So if U didn't come 2 party child, I think U better get up offa my block!

CHORUS {x2}
(Hey yeah, yeah)
(Yeah)
(U, U, U, U)
(Your old ideas)
(Why don't U just be happy, baby?)
(Go'n on and get up offa my block)
(Get up offa my block, cuz love is there)
(If U'd just open up 2 it)
(If U'd just believe, your whole world would change, yes it will)

New Power Generation
(Oh-oh-oh) {x3} {repeat}
U got 2 rearrange (We've got 2 rearrange)
We are the New Power Generation
U gotta give up all the fightin'
We gotta try 2 love one another, yeah
We are the New Power Generation {x3} {fade out}

New Power Generation (Pt. II)

(We are the New Power Generation) {x4} {fade in}
(Oh-oh-oh) {x3} {repeat}
Don't pick my apples, don't pick my peaches {sample from "My Tree"}
Leave my tree alone, leave it alone, leave it alone
(Well, yeah yeah yeah...)
(Don't U look at me)
If U're sad and U know it and U think U wanna blow it
Look up in the sky, Love is there!

Oobey shoo doo loo be doo, loo fly me shoo koo doo ooh {x3}
{Sample from "Oobey Doop"}

Kid! (Yo?)
Kid, I got 2 do this
I got the noise, I got 2 do this, man
Then pump the big noise, c'mon in the house...

This here rap's about the true confession
If ya listen close U 'bout 2 learn a lesson
U must know failure before success
Now this is the failure I must confess (Well)
I was hanging onto life trying deal with this
Playing the games, almost got dismissed
Cocaine was the thing that I took on
And nowhere was the place that I was goin' (Preach brother, c'mon)
I must tell the truth, I cannot lie
I was headed 4 the kill, steal, destroy, and die
Top 2 the bottom 2 bottom 2 top
Success is where I'm headed, there ain't no doubt
Success is something that we all want
But the truth is what we need 2 reach that point
I had 2 give this message the so-called truth
I hope there's somthin' in it that's there 4 U
Like I said before, I'ma tell U again ({"Loveleft, Loveright" CHORUS x2})
Success is something that's deep within
So remember the truth - U can't go wrong
The flesh is weak but the spirit is strong
I know I can do this rap, and I know it's right
Cuz I did it in the name of Jesus Christ
C'mon somebody, let's party 2night!

U want me 2 what?? (Shake!) {sample from "Positive Place"}
Yo, what? (Shake! Shake!)
Alright!

The New Power Generation has just taken control

The only songs I listen to on this disk are "Elephants and Flowers", "The Question of U", "Tick Tick Bang", and "Joy in Repetition".

I pretty much skip everything else.

Even so, I love those particular songs so much, I still count this disc as some of the best work he's ever done.

Once you hear Girl o My Dreams & We Can Funk via Dream Factory sessions 1986 you can never listen to anything else. Especially the way GoMD's segs into We Can Funk

It's probably because the best stuff comes from Controversy sessions - Dream Factory era ... recycled, even Jerk Out & Chocolate and 1 or 2 more Time songs are from those years

The one I'm listening too isn't the Camille version

Girl o My Dreams goes into We Can Funk, sounds like full band recordings

Sure you should see it. I think it is a right of passage. If you are really into Prince then you should experience all of his material and form your own opinions. Just go into this one with LOW expectations and unless you are in the company of real hard core Prince fans, watch it alone as you will not be able to enjoy or even experience any of it due to the ridicule that could be thrown your way. I was very lucky at that time as I won a radio contest and got to attend the premier in NYC. The only thing was I had to call into the radio station and do an on air review of the movie. I think I said, uh, well the music is good. Anyway, watch it and at least enjoy the live performances.

Once i heard one of the early configurations of this album on the 30 Years Of Unreleased Funk bootleg, i never went back to the official release, i think it is far superior.

^^^^ lol

I was ashamed when I saw this one, because I was still a heavy Prince fan (trying to hold on after the disappointement of the break up of the Revolution & then the SOTT band)

I held out hope and I felt like someone yanked my pants down in a public mall, while sitting with my brothers and could see they knew this was wack

It's weird know Sheila E. played the drums originally but she isn't there.

And Dr Fink is not in the movie... the only person in the band that's a "hold over" of the Purple Reign is Mico, soon to gone as well
