For all the straight prince male fans?

for all you straight prince fans like me, do u ever talk about prince with ur guy friends? If so do u get accused of being gay, etc etc? Is it tough being a straight male prince fan or do you guys not mention him at all infront of your friends?

Whenever I mention Prince in hetro circles, I'm fortunate enough to be in an environment where, as music lovers, they mostly go 'Oh, Prince... yeah... fuck. He's good, man.... What's he been up to? He's not released anything in years, eh?' They mostly know up to The Rainbow Children and / or Musicology. That's about it.

Any male friend of mine who cliams I must be gay because I listen to Prince, I simply keep kissing them until they agree that I'm not gay at all.

If your friends are that closed minded, homophobic, and plain stupid it's probably time to think about finding new friends.

Besides, 'gay' isn't a matter of how someone dresses, even if they are in high heels and makeup.

Snoop Dog curls his hair, wears fur coats and has manicured (and polished) nails, but no one ever calls him 'gay.'

Why is that?

Seriously, if your friends are that closed minded, you shouldn't limit yourself or what you listen to, by their limited thinking.

actually none of them called me anything. When i mentioned prince, one of them went "isnt he gay". I dont think i should let it bother me since most of us are fans of his music and could care less about his sexuality.

My straight friends generally respect his talent as a musician, though most of them can't name anything beyond the most obvious hits. My gay friends, on the other hand, can't be bothered with the man at all.

I'm not saying there's any kind of conclusive info, there... it's just a strange trend I've noticed. confused

Absolutely no problem among my friends regarding Prince...

Here's an open question...why is the issue of "gayness" brought up in general?...some of us are totally indifferent to homosexuality and don't see why the issue gets so much attention.

1. All my guy friends know that Prince is a badass musician. Even the most white/straight of my friends can look past his high heels and eyeliner to see/respect Prince for his skills.

2. I am comfortable enough in my own skin to talk to my guy friends about anything. If the conversation needs to be an hour long, in depth, talk about Jacob vs. Edward....so be it.

Hmmm this is a very good thread for the guys, although it seems like there are more male Prince fans than female fans on the net hut in real life, I meet more female fans. Off topic, I kno, but just puttin it out there.

But yeah most (ignorant) ppl go for the heels, mostly, and then the makeup for reasons not to like him, totally ignoring the fact of his fabulous musicianship. I don't think casual male listeners of Primce want to get caught up in that... But I'm speaking from a female's point of view so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! biggrin In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!!

It's never been an issue for me. I've been a hardcore dan since 1982 and never got any grief for it from dudes. If anything it got me laid more thru high school (girls will do anyhting for a bootleg)!

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

i hear stuff about the "butt out" pants all the time and that's completely indefensible so i don't try to defend that or thoughts of his gayness. i mention he's always had the hottest chicks on his tip. most agree that cats can't SEE him as a musician/artist

I've always talked about him with all my friends (male/female, straight/gay) and never had any problems (random people/acquaintances in passing conversation - some of those people have been a bit thick for sure).

First of all, it's hard for it to be ignored when you've got giant stacks of 7 and 12 inches laying around and a massive row of CDs on the shelf. Also, a good number of my friends over the years who would even bother paying attention to such things have been artists or musicians. They tend to "get it" most of the time, even if they aren't fans. So even though there are very few people in my life who are fans like I am, they still understand why I dig the music. But there's the difference, I think. I don't own anything else Prince. Just his music. No framed albums or posters. No altars filled with Prince knick knacks. I imagine a lot of people get more grief for that than just owning some music.

I could just be clueless, too. Because I really don't care what anybody else thinks. lol Somebody who would judge an artist by whether or not they might be gay isn't the type of person I'd usually be hanging around with, anyway.

I do have one friend who I've been tight with since I was 15 and he was 13 who fought Prince for a VERY long time because of the way he looks. Like, twenty years! lol But he's been a guitar player since he was about 16. So a few years ago I spent a good long time (weeks) picking through endless concerts and aftershow recordings, editing out the best jams and solos I could find. Filled up a CD, equalized everything and sent it to him. He didn't say anything for about a month (unusual, because we've exchanged music for almost 25 years now), then he called one day with the CD BLASTING in the background and started the conversation with, "dude... I didn't know!" lol Happy moment that one. nod He still doesn't listen to Prince, though. Just recognizes why I would dig the guys music so much.

If you have a "diva" CD (Madonna, Mariah, Cher, Aguilera, Britney, Lady Gaga) your sexuality comes into question. It's like saying you own a Judy Garland CD, or a large selection of Broadway musicals

I think the people who have their apartment or home decked out with Prince memorabilia might get some funny looks, but no one would think they were gay.

Go to a Stevie Nicks concert though, or Fleetwood Mac. There's whole sections of shirtless dudes that follow her.

But Morrissey is an interesting case regarding the male fans. Same with Justin Timberlake. It was considered "gay" to like N'Sync, but acceptable to like JT.
