honesty i thought it was about prince's future child...not Gregory per say but the song was about the thought of having a child in the future (had to clean this up so people wont get the wrong idea)

since the male determines the sex ...

i thought he was singing to a future child ...would you be a happy boy or a girl

plus their were children teddy in the video biggrin

its like hes taking to the future mother of his child and future child

That's what I was going to say.

What is your main problem?

It's only crude if Prince hasn't washed down there.

I guess it means that Prince is singing to either sex? All he can do is offer "love" to boys AND girls.

He also mentioned "a boy or girl" in "Movie Star", about grabbing someone to dance.

Yes, he did, but that was specific. Showing the self-importance and uncaring attitude of this "Movie Star" - the full lyric being "boy or girl, I don't care, I'm hot!"

In Anna Stesia he refers to taking "anyone, boy or girl" to highlight a state of lonliness and desperation.

In D&P, as mentioned already, its because he is talking about universal love and stating that giving expensive, material objects to anyone, boys or girls, is no substitute for love.

None of these examples are arbitrary and are more considered than some people here are giving the lyrics credit for.

I thought it was a well known meaning behind that line... I think wee have a winner here. Hit the nail on the head. thanks i needed that laugh, im sittin here at work bored to death! thanks. Much Love. lol

Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

just bad lyrics, really

unless you want to see it under the controversial "bi" lens, and that makes D&P a much more interesting / risky song...

Laughable, really. Don't get me wrong, I like D&Ps and I love a lot of his other lyrics, but D&Ps has the lyrics a kid would come up with. It's full of cliches that makes me cringe. Someone else may like it for that, and that's their right. But please don't tell me the line doesn't perfectly fit in with the rest of the lyrics and should therefore be considered as a deep, hidden message.

If you're still not convinced, I challenge you to come up with another lyric that fits in just like this one. It's used for some flow if you ask me.
You mean you're gonna actually hear what we play tonight? You're not gonna make up the notes in your mind?

For those who do believe that the "boy or a" has no deeper meaning and was used simply to finish the line to make it rhyme - no. He would have simply used "beautiful girl" or whatever instead. The "boy or a girl" does that something and I stand by what I said before.

I disagree. Using "beautiful" in this case would make less sense, it would be even more obvious it's a filler word. Try singing it in the song, you'll know what I talk about wink

You don't have to take him literally with "beautiful girl." His point was that Prince could have easily found a way to fill out the line with more words if he only wanted to direct it to a girl. It's not like "boy or a" is the only thing that fits there.

He's addressing both audiences end of-it is that simple. What Prince may need to do-or should have done is say "people" etc. Comments on here about bisexuality or homosexuality are nonsense. I'm not saying Prince isn't-who the hell knows. However lyrically Prince would never write from that angle because it ain't his sell or his public persona-his legacy is dirty hetro sex and anything there on in would make him a hypocrite (please don't debate that now).
