The reason why Prince should get rid of these backup singers is because, his music sounds so pedistrian and uninspiring. What I liked about the One Nite Alone-Musicology period, was that Prince first and foremost emphasized musicianship and artistry. From his records and shows during that time, he was the musicians' musician. A cat that surrounded himself with other musicians he could bounce off of and challenge his own musicianship by incorporating their some of their ideas and talents on their respective instruments into his own work. With the girls it seems like he's more interested in showcasing them than showcasing the full-spectrum of talent that is in his band.

since when did Elisa get a reputation as some great soul singer? she was a second-rate Paula Abdul wanna be at the peak of her career.

You need to get your ears checked. Paula aint never had pipes like that...

judging by their recorded output, they're on par. the only difference between them at the time of their heyday was that Elisa had no personality and putting out dance records with no ability to dance.

this is prince land.

the best way to lose the backup singers is to say you love them, they absolutely make the show, and bring out the very best in prince. He NEEDS them.

= they're fired the next day.

This thread failed as soon as i read the OP say Prince was too spineless to fire some one.

lol seriously! Prince has no trouble changing band members

Soo true! That 's because prince initially started out as his on band/background vocalist,so band members and background vocalists will always come and go freely with him.

Thats the biggest bullshite I've heard all day. Post at least ONE Paula song where she even comes close to singing as good as Elisa... Thats right, it doesn't exist. Paula was never a singer. Elisa has singing and winning competitions as a teenager. The only comparison is the type of music people got them to sing.

Change it one more time..

This isn't about album sales. Its about talent. We all know singing talent does not a successful career make... else people like Britney Spears, J-Lo, & Paula Abdul wouldn't have had careers... smart guy. If she would have released Playgirl or Loves No Fun as her second single from I Am instead of Oooh this i need I think she would have had a different trajectory as a solo artist.

she's not that good on those songs either and her career trajectory would have been the same. her material was sub-par Paula Abdul records and Mariah Carey had already broken through and she would have gotten no props for her voice.

Getting back to the point of the thread... smile ...I think Shelby, Liv and Elisa bring energy, perfect voices and a grown-up eye candy to the gigs.

I don't care what a persons age is

But these women for me are not grown up eye candy at all

not talking about singing ability if Vanity at her age was up there that would still be 'grown up eye candy'

I agree that the ONA-band and tour was excellent and Prince maybe musically on the top of his game.

But this tour has got a lot of Soul and Funk ( at least in Vienna wink and this 3 ladys with their strong voices contributed a lot to the show ! love them biggrin

Same with Frederic Yonnet , he was phenomenal !!

i agree, listening to shleby reminds me of planet earth and therefore I associate anything she does with mediocrity. its like graffiti bridge with all the "guest" singers who frankly ruin that album. the biggest problem as noted here is that prince likes these singers and thinks they are "talented" so we have to therefore listen to them too.

shelby in particular is disturbing because her voice is so distinctive and therefore it doesnt sound "background" or "support", rather it always sounds like a lead vocel. the days of the weaker backup vocals like wendy and lisa, sheila e, etc were great as it allowed prince to stand out and be noticed, but i agree these guys overpower prince and to be honest when i buy prince, I want to hear prince not shelby and other shite.
