Ok, from what I've "heard" the live sound really matches the sound of the new album (based on these snippets). I loved the Montreaux stuff, but this sounds both fresher and more retro at the same time - the coolest sound since 3121 if not before, I think.

What I've heard from O2 and Musicology sounded just milking the hits, this sounds like he's revisiting and juicing it up.

Much as I love the horns, I think giving them a rest is turning out to be a great idea... (+Yonnet and Sheila = great bonus and I'm lovin' Shelby too...)

Certainly sounds like old Prince on the surface.

As a guy who does not hate on Prince's new music generally, I feel I can say that it's strange that Prince does music like this, plays all his old hits in concert, but tells interviewers to "live in the present" lol

Er....Wrong ....See Berlin show 5th July Setlist..... lol

Come on folks, these songs sound like decent sounding MPLSsound kinda songs. Not bad at all. Remember, this comes from the top hater on the org..lol.

Nah, I am pure love.

We should not expect 1999 or Sign O The Times again. That creative period is dead. Just enjoy what you can and be glad it aint crap. I'm feelin it.

All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

Dreamer2 said: I'm not saying that this album will be a retread. What I meant by "every 80's album sounding different" is that there was no 1 "80's Prince" sound that could be easily copied today that would make me happy, because that's not what it's about. 80's Prince, at least for me, sounded and felt like someone who was trying to be creative and make great music, to not just rest on "eh, this is ok, it will do". It wasn't just the Linn, or the MN sound keyboards, or the falsetto, or the guitar (without the accompaning keyboard underneath), it was all of that and more. And no, every 80's Prince song wasn't great, but even the failures were interesting. Current Prince sounds like someone just going through the motions, at least to my ears.

hmph!

I would have to agree with Dreamer and Klyph. For the most part, with few exceptions, the last few records made in the past 5 or 6 years ago have all seemed just weak. Like Prince isn't trying to make anything great. Sure, some songs are definite attempts to be "mainstream" or "commercial." But I don't get the feeling from listening to ANY modern Prince record that he was trying to be "new" or "fresh." Certainly not "creative" or "exciting." They all just seem like cop-outs.

Compassion sounds like it is from 1999/Controversy era.....love this!

Beginning Endlessly is very experimental but retro (sounds like Dream Factory era to me)

Lavaux: Cool song. Really reminds me of WONDERFUL ASS

These 3 songs sound new wave-ish to me, I love that sound, and I hate cookie cutter r&b.

Here's hoping this is Prince's whitest album in a long time.

My only gripe with these snippets is that Prince adds nothing via his vocals. Part of what made a good Prince song, and the uniqueness therein was that there were multiple layers of melody. He used to add melody to the vocals as another instrumental element, but these are sung very dry. Hopefully, there will be some better singing on other tracks - of course the songs that these snippets came from could have some extra color elsewhere in the track.

I agree. Vocally, he sounds like he recorded himself sleep-talking on these clips. Minor gripe i suppose.

nod

Something does feel off with the vocals... His delivery seemed to change in 2002, no? But then I love Satisfied, and I like what he did with Fury, so...

Nothing's perfect, but I do like the dry delivery, it beats oversinging it, like he's done a lot, with too many oohs, aah, yelps. Like I said before it's as if he took 80's backing sounds and just talks over it.

I am not suggesting we should all unanimously love everything Prince does, but I'm pretty convinved people here would have complained in '87 when he released 'Sign O Times.' In '88 'Lovesexy' would have been 'over-produced', 'grandiose' with 'too many instruments in the mix' and 'ridiculous lyrics.' 'Parade' would be an 'unfocused' mess with 'alien' parisian and orchestral sounds; 'over-indulgent' rather than 'truly experimental.' 'Around the World in a Day' Prince's 'psychedelic, beatles hangover', a real 'dissapointment' after the glories of 'Purple Rain.' '1999', a 'plastic dance album' missing the raw, up-front sounds of 'Dirty Mind' and 'Controversy'. And so on, right back to 'For You.'

What's your point? Everybody knows that there's no Prince album everybody agrees on being perfect. It's just a question of what does the majority of Prince experts or members of the Prince fan community think about his work.

Sounded pretty good. Much better than what I've heard from him in recent years and certainly much better than that rediculous embarassment of an album he did last year. I think I'll buy it.
