I got it. Thanks Phil.

I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Very interesting. This definately sounds like so-called "80's Prince", moreso than MPLSound and I liked that one quite a bit. I don't want to get my hopes too high but I like what I'm hearing. The music hasn't sounded this energetic and alive since "3121" so that's a plus. The lyrics are interesting, I can take or leave what I've heard but it doesn't make me less excited either. I am more interested in hearing 20TEN today than I was yesterday and that's a great thing.

There's another thread on here that works to hear the samples for those that missed it on this thread.

But all in all I like what I'm hearing!! I am now officially excited! excited

"Compassion" sounds like the clean sister of "Let's Pretend We're Married".

"Beginning Endlessy" has that funky Linn programming that I've been missing. thumbs up!

And "Lavaux" has that old school funk/pop feel to it.

Can't wait!

I wouldn't go that far! no no no!

It actually sounds...TO ME...more like the bastard child Dad had, after he discovered Viagra works and went strollin' through his old stomping grounds. Related by blood? Perhaps! The clean sister of? HELL NAW!!! shrug

.

[Edited 7/6/10 10:22am]

lol I get'cha!

So I guess it's really a stretch to say that "Beginning Endlessy" reminds me of Lenny Kravitz's "Believe" and "Lavaux" reminds me of the Pointer Sister's "Automatic"?.... shrug

Verycool - still wondering what happened to the mirror link - thank goodness for SoundCloud

Compassion - beginning of the snippet sounds a bit like Let's Go Crazy and the rest sounds a bit in the vein of TheOneUWannaC

Beginning Endlessly - I liked the little snippet we heard last week and this one I really like the most musically - very fresh sounding and the vocal layering sounds very promising
Lavaux - the largest snippet and it definitly has a serious throw back sound to the 80s - good stuff!!!

Bring It P!

I am not suggesting we should all unanimously love everything Prince does, but I'm pretty convinved people here would have complained in '87 when he released 'Sign O Times.' In '88 'Lovesexy' would have been 'over-produced', 'grandiose' with 'too many instruments in the mix' and 'ridiculous lyrics.' 'Parade' would be an 'unfocused' mess with 'alien' parisian and orchestral sounds; 'over-indulgent' rather than 'truly experimental.' 'Around the World in a Day' Prince's 'psychedelic, beatles hangover', a real 'dissapointment' after the glories of 'Purple Rain.' '1999', a 'plastic dance album' missing the raw, up-front sounds of 'Dirty Mind' and 'Controversy'. And so on, right back to 'For You.'

This quote should be on the homepage (I've been saying that about SOTT on here for about 10 years lol

They definitely sound like 80s tracks, minus the heat. But hell, I'll take that over early-2000s tracks, minus heat. biggrin

And I'm not sure I want to hear what his heat sounds like, if you know what I mean.

I'm overall pretty damn excited now.

Speaking as one of the staunchest "complainers" here...AND...one that was actually around for ALL of the aforementioned albums. I can say in all and complete, wholehearted honesty, that I NEVER, EVER had ANY complaints about them!

Certainly sounds like old Prince on the surface.

As a guy who does not hate on Prince's new music generally, I feel I can say that it's strange that Prince does music like this, plays all his old hits in concert, but tells interviewers to "live in the present" lol

I like all three of those clips, especially Lavaux. It sounds groovy and fresh. They all sound like 80's unreleased songs. I wouldn't be surprised if he just used some backing tracks from the 80's and added new vocals -- the vocals are good but don't really fit with the music. He's just talking over those beats. But I love it...... bring on this album.

Just to add to this, every Prince album has sounded different since 1990 - 2010, not sure what your point is ? Prince has never repeated any album and his sound is his sound, so to say he's doing a retread is pushing the boat out a bit too far ...... lol

I'm not saying that this album will be a retread. What I meant by "every 80's album sounding different" is that there was no 1 "80's Prince" sound that could be easily copied today that would make me happy, because that's not what it's about. 80's Prince, at least for me, sounded and felt like someone who was trying to be creative and make great music, to not just rest on "eh, this is ok, it will do". It wasn't just the Linn, or the MN sound keyboards, or the falsetto, or the guitar (without the accompaning keyboard underneath), it was all of that and more. And no, every 80's Prince song wasn't great, but even the failures were interesting. Current Prince sounds like someone just going through the motions, at least to my ears.

hmph!
