Wanna know why you don't hear many Prince songs on TV?

http://twitter.com/questl...6826571119

if prince didn't charge 5 times the price for publishing, i woulda did his ode to her "Valentina" as her walkover.....instead....

What's kind of funny about the whole thing is that he hasn't really released anything in ages that demands a premium above some of the stuff that's currently in circulation by other artists (who on paper aren't nearly as gifted as he is).

If he had demanded a premiu for Parade or SOTT, it would have still been somewhat douchey, but at least it wouldn't have been comedic. Most of the stuff others may want to play may be his older material, but it's his newer material which he's going to be judged on.

Prince is rather funny.

I don't see what the problem is. You charge what you're worth.

Unless you're ready to bitch about The Beatles, Springsteen, and Radiohead charging similar prices like Questlove said they do, please keep quiet.

Prince is hardly the only artist who charges high prices for publishing.

I'm damn sure you're not gonna call all those other artists greedy, because it doesn't help your agenda.

So, take this weak bullshit somewhere else.

BTW, great research going on someone's fucking twitter page!!!

isn't it more so that his latest output don't justify high pricing? Like said above, SOTT/Parade etc is a different story.

Who gives a flying fuck what questlove or anyone else thinks about Prince's pricing? Oh wait...of course, BVH since it's something negative that's said about P. I don't want to hear Prince's music in commercials, MTV crap or whatever some goofball wants to use it for.

Fuck Questlove. He's the same dumb MFer who declared truth to that phony mug shot of Prince from a couple of months ago.

Prince is greedy, it's that simple. He's missed every opportunity to have his music played wherever by whoever. You can't price yourself right out of the market, then bitch because everyone ignores your money hungry ass.

Well to be fair, publishing is where all the big $$$ are at in the music biz, and with Prince having his own label and studio to finance and not doing many gigs I can understand why he'd charge so much... still seems a little much though!

Scenario:

- artist A asks $500; 5 tv-shows think it's a fair price, and pay the license;A earns $2500.

- artist B asks $5000; zero tv-shows want to pay that price; B earns $0.

Who's the winner?

Ah, so how much did Prince earn from this? $0.

Oh, and his song wasn't exposed to an audience that might be interested in buying it; instead, he got yet another slice of bad publicity.

Yeah, I see your point.

Yeah, I see your point.

How is this "bad publicity"? It was a tweet.

Questlove has always made it known that some artists charge more to use their songs than others.

Trust me, a 10 second snippet of The Roots covering Valentina isn't gonna make anyone go out and buy LotusFlow3r.

Most people won't even know what songs they play unless they talk about it during the interview.

I'm guessing The Beatles and Radiohead are missing out on getting their music heard too, because they charge high prices for publishing.

you're really missing the point here. P has ample opportunity to make mega$£, maybe not in 1 big hit [which he likes to do] but on smaller amounts ihn higher quantity over longer periods of time. If P has gone broke after earning mega millions since the 2004 comeback then he only ha s himself to blame.

You're right, Prince does have ample opportunity to make mega $. That's why he's gonna be touring and playing large festivals where he can make millions for one night.

He hasn't gone broke since 2004. That was all rumor-mill bullshit that hasn't been proven.

hmm and that's why he still has the commercial sense of a drunk monkey!. He announces major stadium dates this summer with very little notice and guess what they ain't selling out and the prices are having to be dropped to get some bums on seats. No doubt he enjoys this kind of drama and is threatening to sue behind the scenes BUT it is all his fault.

Right, the first presentation of the scenario is a bifurcation fallacy. The OP assumes Prince is playing the implied game and thus has a stake in winning it, as though he is in P's head to know what is most important to him.

Its completely obvious that Prince likes money, BUT as anyone knows, he's extremely stubborn about many other principles that he lives by that mean more to him than selling himself cheaply.

Change it one more time..

here's the problem. Prince is charging 5 times the standard to make money off of his publishing. The point being, to make money. So instead of getting 10 organizations who are willing to pay the standard rate, he might get 1 to do. Thus losing out on 10 organizations' pay and 10 more exposures to his music. Which he'd like to sell. And the organizations who pay this kind of stuff really are not going to be bothered to pay 5 times the going rate just for a Prince song, so they'll quickly look elsewhere for something just as suitable.

Good thing he's a musical genius, because he's a complete dope when it comes to anything else.

How about let Prince worry about Prince's finances, and stop pretending to be his accountant. If he charges that much because he doesn't want his music to be played on T.V. shows, and in commercial, so be it.

Someone besides Prince needs to worry about his finances or he wouldn't have ended up a couple million dollars in debt earlier this year.

It's not about Questlove being stingy. The studio gives him a set music budget. Why waste a portion of it on a snippet of a song that the general audience won't have any idea of what it is when you can get 5x the bang for your buck with something that has widen audience exposure.

Yeah, I see your point.

it's easy to mistake Prince for just another pop music artist desperately grabbing every opportunity to promote himself, get his music played, and make money

i realise he's done just that many, many times, so i understand why anyone would assume it the natural thing for him to do under any circumstances

but maybe it's merely an issue of what price he puts on his own publishing

he knows his own worth, which is more than can be said for maybe 80% of pop music artists today

would you rather him be the whore he's so often accused of being, or would you rather he have a healthy attitude toward the monetary value of his own work?

Prince doesn't care if his shit isnt used like that which is why he has it priced so high. This is why you dont see him on Now 732 cd's or his music in too many trivial commericalized areas. Who cares if he made 0 dollars? He doesn't. Yall act like he is a pauper trying to sell his wares to anyone who will buy and for any price.
