Prince's hits are always tied to pussy.

Here me out on this.

He scored a major hit with the album 1999 because he was drowning in pussy at the time. Purple Rain came out and he was having him some Vanity pussy.

When Sign of The Times and LoveSexy came out, they failed to sell as many records as PR because Prince was sleeping with Cat Glover--who it is arguable may or may not have possessed a pussy. So, the USA didn't dig it as much as it could. However, LoveSexy did very well in the UK, because they are relatively gay over there and dig chicks with dicks, or at least the idea that the chick next to them might not have a pussy.

The Prince fucked Kim Bassigner, and YOU KNOW she had some prime time pussy back in those days, and he scored a major hit with Batman.

When Graffiti Bridge came out, the pussy there was provided by Ingrid Chavez. However, that was sterile poetic pussy which seldom leads to much excitment, so the USA didn't dig it.

Then Diamonds & Pearls came out. ONe could argue Prince scored his first major hit (not tied to a soundtrack) due to the pussy being provided by Diamond or Pearl; however, there is no evidence that he was sleeping with either women.

There is, however, TONS of evidence that Prince was using his OWN BOI-PUSSY almost nightly on the Act I tour.

In recent years, Prince's pussyventures have been sporadic and often laced with a certain amount of desperation. At 51 years of age, attending high fashion shows in Paris accompanied by a much younger looking female companion who looks a bit like a cross between an extra in a Janet Jackson video and an Egyptian hooker, just makes you look sort of...well, silly.

So again.. It's all tied to pussy.

At least he's still getting tender choice cuts of pussy from time to time.

Totally disagree

Just by the amount of outtakes and boots from the 1986 period alone, shows the Revolution wasn't done yet.

To say that sound (what sound? from 1999 Purple Rain ATWIAD the Family Parade)? which one because each is very unique...

That same sound was continued with Sign o the Times, SOTT was not a Sheila E. Levi Boni Cat Mico album. That music was Dream Factory/Revolution/Susannah Melvoin + Prince. Just because the Revolution wasn't his backing band didn't negate that. Even music from the Black album came from that 1986 era... there is a reason Susannah is the backing lead on Rock Hard In A Funky Place

I guess Tony M had what it took to take Prince where it was happening. Prince got lost in the swirl of 1990's heavy hip hop influence music.

If anything, if Wendy, Lisa, Dr. Fink, Bobby Z. and Prince were to make an announcement that they were going on a limited tour of the U.S. and Europe people would flock from all over to re-live Prince & The Revolution. All the artist mention have went off and score success in some level or another. If anything they're famous amongst diehard, like myself.

It would be a $ Tour to say the least. It's not about being a Star. They're all Musican/Stars in my eyes.

Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

That goes without saying that if Prince & The ORIGINAL Revolution, Morris Day & The Time and Sheila E. went on the road or in select cities, that would do very well. They all do pretty well on their own but, to do it collectively, I'd really go for that. As the title of the thread says:

Does Prince need The Revolution if he wants to be a star again?

I do not believe they need each other at this point. Again, it would be the LOVE of performing together that would have us all misty and teary eye'd.

I was at the Northrop gig in Minneapolis when Matt, and Fink got onstage. I was at the 7/7/7 shows in Minneapolis when Wendy and Sheila E were there. As a hardcore Prince fan, I loved it.

However, the casual fans didn't really give a flying fuck about Sheila, or Wendy, or Matt or Fink. Some people even needed explanation of who these people were.

As a surprise guests, seeing his old band mates/friends is great. As a hook to get the masses to a Prince show, it is ill fated and slightly smacks of desperate nostalgia.

I just don't see these old band mates having $$$$$ drawing power to the casual fan. Again, The Revolution matters a lot to Prince fans. To your everyday person? Not as much. Prince is Prince to them. Except when he's prince

This is the third or forth time the point has been made by both of us but people don't want to acknowledge/accept it. Prince's band members are known mainly to the fanbase. The casual fans who came to the show with me on 7/7/7 had no clue who else was onstage...same with the Musicology tour. And those are the people who sell out shows, along with the general public looking for a fun night out.

It's really odd that folks don't get that.

Pretty much.

Prince could call any one of his bands The Revolution, not include any of the bandmembers from the 80's, and the General Public wouldn't notice it.

They might notice that there's no longer a dude playing keyboards in surgical scrubs and a mask, but they wouldn't notice any big difference.

When most people pay to see Prince, or Bruce Springsteen, they're paying to see them, and not who's in the band.

There is that risk...kinda like George Lucas going back and doing Star Wars I-III. Definitely tarnished his legacy.

What Star Wars is to George Lucas does not equal what The Revolution is to Prince.

Also, I would add that--although the Prequels may have upset older fans of Star Wars and divided critics, the new films were each all time mega hits, hella blockbusters, and gained George Lucas a few more generations of Star Wars fans. They weren't bombs by any sense of the word. Prince would be lucky to "tarnish his legacy" like that. The kind of massive appeal that Star Wars has is exactly the kind of mass appeal the original poster is talking about.

Lastly, George Lucas made Howard the Duck. If that didn't "tarnish his legacy" nothing will. The same could be said of Prince and Grafitti Bridge.

[Edited 6/3/10 6:47am]

No doubt...it was just an analogy refering to the fact that a Revolution reunion may not produce the same effect that they had in the 80s. Much like Star Wars I-III did not produce the same fan reaction as the originals.

For the record, I really liked Ep I, loved the story of Ep II but the execution was horrible, and thought Ep III was really good but lacking in some areas. But yeah...Lucas got a lot of my money in 1999, 2002 an 2005.

This thread IS about how popular a comeback of the Revolution would be; I'm not talking about the quality/relevance of the music that Prince has released without them... wink

I know. But other points of view have come up about Prince not needing Wendy and Lisa, how his output has been fine without them, etc. and I was responding to that.

Personally I would give my left nut for a Revolution reunion but unfortunately I dont think the masses would get too hyped up. Like many have said, few youngsters have any clue who the Revolution members are.

Why so MANY people here worry about the friggin' youngsters is beyond me. FUCK'EM! WE DON'T NEED 'EM, AND CLASSIC ARTISTS DON'T NEED THEM EITHER. Brainless american youngsters stick with Nickelback and Katie Perry and they usually don't buy records, they just buy some songs from iTunes or whatever.

A comeback of the Revolution has chances of huge success thanks to

a) the european young audience (16-30 years old) which is, let's face it, MUCH MORE cultivated than the american youngsters/teenagers,

b) those american old-school enthusiasts that basically give it up after Come/Gold/Emancipation...and who partially rediscovered Prince with 3121/Superbowl Show...

c) those 30-45 years old mainstream pop lovers who would surely jump on the whole "Revolution comeback" bandwagon, just to be a part of it...The same people that help Prince to sellout arenas these days...

d) and of course, hardcore fans that stick with the man no matter what

Exactly and it might be more lucrative as well, besides youngsters if they want to learn about you will get on some device and steal your shit lol. The coverage would be insane as well, media outlets who smell dollars will clamor for interviews, Oprah and Ellen would fight one another in a steal cage for the first P & TR performance not to mention Leno. Like i stated earlier The Stones have been reconfiguring and finding new ways to take boomers $ for years. If he got the Super Bowl gig simply on the strength of his legendary status what would HBO, MSG or some Vegas Casino bid to broadcast a live PPV. I would love a 1999 retrospective similair to the new exhile on mainstreet project but i know this thing can only fly with PR as it's centerpeice. The hat trick Prince pulled then hadnt been done since Hard Days Night so there is culteral significance. The Time who played the foil in the groundbreaking movie would have to open and Sheila can be added as warm up/ guest percussionist for both acts. The American Music Awards as well as the Grammys and Idol..smelling money will convienently choose to honor PR/Prince in conjunction with all of the shit they see going on. We are talkin forte knox, minus a dime of the childrens money. If kids who wanna know, or relive or know their shit want to come on board cool but it will only be gravy. Wow, just thinking about how easy that would be..makes me sad lol. Never gonna happen lol

Let's face it; Prince's first album after the farewell of The Revolution, SOTT, was not a big hit; Lovesexy was a failure; Batman was a huge hit because of the movie (like it or not), GB was , if I'm not mistaken, not very successful and D&P was a hit because of the singles (nobody truly cared about the NPG anyway). Love Symbol's sales were a "disappointment", and ughh, everything after that sucked in terms of sales (Emancipation being the exception, mainly because of the "false" platinum disc affair)

Musicology and 3121 were successful, but could have been bigger (despite 3121 being a NÂș1 album) and PE and LF/MPLS have both flopped.

So, let's face it folks: Prince needs the Revolution if he wants to be as successful as he was during the mid-80s.

It seems that Prince, like some other solo artists that started or achieved fame with a band (Sting, Springsteen, etc.) is still remembered, by the mainstream masses, as that guy of the Purple Rain movie who had that cool band called The Revolution.

In my case, I don't give a damn if Prince resurrects the Revolution (it won't happen, anyway), but I'm sure that the comeback would be HUGE.

Thoughts?

? Prince STILL is a star.

Well... these are different times. We don't even have pop stars like we did in the 80s. Also, who over the age of 40 was ever as huge as Prince was in his 20s? The star-making industry doesn't put it's support behind non-youths, generally. But really, how do you define success? Prince can sell out giant venues anywhere he goes at any time and pull a half million dollars. Certainly, I don't think if he got back together with The Revolution that they would be necessarily doing the quality of work they did during those last 4 years. What they had was something unique amongst each other at that time. Who knows what would come out it. Look at what Prince did to Wendy and Lisa's contributions on Planet Earth. They are so obscured and minimal. Based on that alone, a reunion doesn't bode so well. That said, I would be lose my fucking shit if there was a Revolution reunion. Merely for the fact that I never saw them when I was young, and I always wanted to. (PS -how come I can't format paragraphs? What's changed?)

I think Prince is probably more than happy with the renewed star status he has enjoyed since 2004. That really was the year of his second coming. OK it might have been US centric, but the Musicology album and tour and the RnR HOF and the Grammy appearance etc helped him attain that music legend status.

He cemented this with the Superbowl performance in 2007 (in the UK and Europe i think 2007 was the equivalent year to 2004) and then with the O2 residency. The 21 Nights gigs were similar concept to the Musicology tour, greatest hits, superb shows that were all about Prince as solo act.

I'm not sure that a Revolution reunion would make him any more a "star". In any case he would have to be fully on board in terms of hype and marketing to make it even register with the casual music fan. When Wendy and Lisa appeared at the Brits with him in 2006, it wasn't even announced. They were just there and most people probably just thought Prince had an (almost) all female band. Of course we were all stoked and moved but it was irrelevant to most. It's all about Prince, you either like him or you don't I reckon.
