c) I still think that a Revolution comeback plus a BIG TV/Radio/Internet promotional campaign (including snippets of When Doves Cry, Kiss, Raspberry Beret, Let's Go Crazy, Purple Rain and even 1999 and LRC) could make millions for Prince: first a world tour, and then a new & moderately strong studio album...

d) Obviously the younger (and brainless) generations don't know Prince, but that's not the point. The Police comeback, for example, was HUGE due to the old-school fans, plus some cultish teenagers...

I think that a Prince and The Revolution comeback would bring back those Prince "fans" that lost faith/interest in his new music after 1995 (the real cause of his drop in sales)...I mean, nowadays the man has trouble in order to sell at least 500.000 copies of his new albums, but on the other hand he's selling out arenas??? Wtf

I don't think he needs the revolution. Why live in the past? Even at the height of POP success-his music move forward. Listen at ATWIAD sounds nothing like purple rain. Sales of CD's are down-because people just steal the music. If he would use the Revolution for a 1 night only PPV performance to support Roadhouse Garden CD release. Other than that-I see no use of the Revolution.

I would rather see prince move forward even if he stumbles forward than see him go backwards. I do not want to sit through a concert where Purple Rain the album is played from beginning to the end. As a matter of fact I don't need to hear him play Purple Rain ever again. Imagine what it must be like for him when he has played that song thousands of times. Let the man move forward, if you don't like or approve of the direction you should stay in the past. Not moving forward for any true artist is artistic death.

Prince wasn't a member of The Revolution....they were his backup band. He was famous/making great music on his own before The Revolution...well...they are famous because of Prince. His process of making music is much more isolated than Paul McCartney's or MJ's and his band serves a totally different function than The Beatles did to McCartney.

Well, band members have returned before, for one off performances, studio sessions, live band residencies etc, a whole line-up doesn't seem that much of a stretch.

As for comfort zone, what do you call doing hits shows?

The Twinz were just a re-run of of the D&P act, or having Sheila and Cat, or W&L at each side. Prince is mid-50s, and personally I think having 20 year old bits of fluff hanging off him looks worse than say, Lisa, Eric, Mark or Dez being on stage again. These people play and create music, and still do.

Honestly, I really don't think it would be that big of a deal. It would get some press buzz for sure, but it wouldn't rock the music world, and most people would just say "Who?!", people know who calls, and always has called, the shots: Prince.

Well, when I speak of a sensation, I am speaking not of the world, but only to those who are listening to Prince now, because I think that would be the nucleus of any impact on bringing back the Rev.

I never really saw or paid attention to the D&P act, I never really liked that song or that album, so I have to plead ignorant on that one.

As far as the hits shows.... those make me sad as well. I do not like the idea of it. I would be completely pissed to go to a Prince show and have a line up from 82-86 with only one new song.

I believe the Rev has done all they can do with Prince, that sound is over. I also say the same of the NPG. Prince needs to push forward, and that is some of the problems I had with Lotus, it seemed to reach back into a comfort zone that has long been beat to death.

We if I could see a show consisting of music from 1982-1986 I could die in peace. There are so many songs from that time period that were either never performed live or only performed in that album tour period or only once in a while. And to hear some outtakes live from those times. WHICH by the way has the greatest output of his career

What sound? there were so many sounds that as Prince said they barely were scratching the surface on.

That's like comparing apples and cars. That line of thinking does not compute. The Revolution to Prince relationship does not equate to you and your Mom's relationship. Did you fire your Mom? Plus, one can assume your relationship with your Mom has changed from when you where a child-I trust you wipe your own bottom? My point being, still needing your Mom does not equate to Prince needing the Revolution band.

Let's face it; Prince's first album after the farewell of The Revolution, SOTT, was not a big hit; Lovesexy was a failure; Batman was a huge hit because of the movie (like it or not), GB was , if I'm not mistaken, not very successful and D&P was a hit because of the singles (nobody truly cared about the NPG anyway). Love Symbol's sales were a "disappointment", and ughh, everything after that sucked in terms of sales (Emancipation being the exception, mainly because of the "false" platinum disc affair)

Musicology and 3121 were successful, but could have been bigger (despite 3121 being a Nº1 album) and PE and LF/MPLS have both flopped.

So, let's face it folks: Prince needs the Revolution if he wants to be as successful as he was during the mid-80s.

It seems that Prince, like some other solo artists that started or achieved fame with a band (Sting, Springsteen, etc.) is still remembered, by the mainstream masses, as that guy of the Purple Rain movie who had that cool band called The Revolution.

In my case, I don't give a damn if Prince resurrects the Revolution (it won't happen, anyway), but I'm sure that the comeback would be HUGE.

Thoughts?

yep, you are right. But the question is not whether we approve of the idea artistically, but whether or not Prince needs the revolution to be a star again.

And I totally agree with your statement bro.

But when we think about it, how can we say the words "star again", when did Prince ever cease to be a star?

I would think a man who can get on SNL or the late show whenever he wants is still a star.

Will he ever be 80's famous again? Probably not, but I liked him the least in those Purple Rain days, cause I knew people who jump from one fad to next was crazy about him. They jumped off of the PR band wagon as soon as they got on.

So to have all of the fad people notice him again from the 80's, yep, the Revolution would help, but as someone pointed out to me earlier, it would still have not the impact that the 80's did, not nearly.

Prince made real magic once in his life, when he was young, and wasn't really trying, it just happened because of so many elements playing at once. It's rare someone make magic twice in a life.

We are all so full of doody here

Are you an artist? In the Andy Warhol Diaries Warhol laments that the fact that he did not stick to doing the same kind of painting. A band like Motorhead is sort of in that vein, they created something original and they just keep tweaking it every album. They still make great albums!

It's not the only way to go, but it is certainly not a crime to specialize and do particular things as an artist.

That said, reforming The Revolution would actually be a potentially interesting diversion for all involved. It would not be the same old same old at this stage of the game.

Hell no he doesn't need the Revolution. They all look older than he does except for Lisa. He needs some fresh meat that also happen to adore his sound and body of work. A new band with a fresh perspective and no more dancers!

Not true. Many of the greatest had recurring images and themes.

Salvador Dali painted "soft watches", his wife Gala's visage, black ants (representing decay), his own profile, and his town of Figueres, Catalonia, Spain in many of his paintings.

That's unfair. He never stopped being a star he just had fluctuation of record sales and didn't over expose himself like so called "stars" today are doing. He took a creative breat but kept releasing music because it's in his blood and he still needs a paycheck now and then. I mean it's not like he's Meg Ryan, Brandy, Morris Day or even Tom Sizemore. Now those are people who have stopped being stars.

(1) Why would you like Prince less because of fans, why should fad fans reflect Prince?

I will say as much as I LOVE ATWIAD, the next album should have been more of high energy album that could have bridged him to the next project. At that point during the Purple Reign he could have easily asked for WB to put out 2 albums Our Destiny & Around the World in a Day (for example)

(2) overall I don't think anyone can have an impact on music as it once was. But I do think a reunion would shake things up.

That's because we are all fans. And the years between Rave and the Musicology tour were hard in terms of popularity, specially outside the US...

It would be "cool" if Wendy, Lisa and Dr. Fink got together to work on something again. Wishful, thinking on my part.

I don't think stardom has anything to do with any of them at this point in their careers. It's all about the love of making and performing music (now).

Peace ... & Stay Funky ...
