I think he looks at the grammys, brits, WMA, AMA's, Oscars etc.., in his house on the hill looking over his land, checks his bank balance, reads the music press about EMI losses, thinks about the 21 Nights Concert Record that still stands and laughs out loud...."maybe i do know something about music"

Really ...we on the org may say this and that...but when Prince says i'm playing live we all (including the haters) dig into our pockets and buy a ticket...

We really don't know what we are talking about when it comes to music ...we just choose when to buy and when not to buy his records...end of story. lol

Hehe - on point. Anyone can be an armchair critic!

Everyone is a critic. I'm sure there's food you don't like to eat. Do you eat everything or do you like certain things and not others? Do you prefer one restaurant to another? I didn't create this song. Prince did. He gave it out so people would listen to it. It's only natural to have an opinion on something you listen to, play, or experience.

I don't know... Beyonce won how many Grammys? Does that mean she's a musical genius too? You know how many Beyonce albums I have? None.

If you single out any award it does not mean much really, but when you look at the scope of awards Prince has won over the years ...it goes with out saying he's a major force in MUSIC and forms a culture around it

There is a "Prince" sound

There will never be a beyonce sound it just does not exist and never will.. lol

I didn't think the reaction would be this overwhelmingly negative.

The Current's blog is lit up with positive reviews.

It's not my favorite, but hey, this is on the heels of "Purple and Gold". It sounds a little wacky and artificial, but it has potential.

Anyone remember the differences between "Feel better..." when it came out online versus the album? Not saying this isn't the finished product, but who knows.

I like the tune!! The first 24 seconds or so is REAL HOT!! That intro is fantastic!! I love all the guitars throughout the entire number. I like the " I AM HERE...WHERE ARE U," touch from the MONTREUX JAZZ FESTIVAL. I also like the KINGS X VOICE BOX that PRINCE uses somewhere in the middle of the jam. I will say that there are tones and textures here in this song that has never been done before by PRINCE. There was a hint of a LED ZEPPELIN vibe to it towards the end with that orchestral keyboard kicking in. Sounds like a great way to open a new show for a brand new tour. All in all.....a nice song. So is this the new direction for 2010??? Hopefully a brand new album shortly.

That's true. But regardless of how many awards or how great past Prince music has been, the past truly does not equal the future. I predict that Prince shelves this song in the same way he shelved Turn Me Loose after the poor response to that (much better) song. I wouldn't mind hearing the other songs Prince recorded during the session, I'll give him honest feedback about each one. This one just isn't a winner. Neither was Purple and Gold. So Prince is 0 for 2 in 2010. No big deal. Bring on more music.

plus, if prince were as popular in today's environment as he was in the 80s
and early 90s, they would be handing him grammys left right and center.

all these awards seem to have been completely stripped of significance, if
they had any to begin with.

what's up with any and all 'happening' artists receiving 7 grammys in one
go?

if you'd go by that standard, prince should have enough grammys to fill his
entire basement.

The song is called "Cause and Effect," and it's a rocker - filled with virtuosic guitar work, explosive drum breaks, a poppy chorus, trademark shrieks and whoops, some intriguing lyrics

Sounds more like something you'd read on the backside of a B-movie you found on the lower shelf at your local video store.

It's not a recommendation, it's a warning!!!

i'm still a bit baffled though where they came up with saying that
is was like foo fighters and radiohead. i'm sure i read that on the
current's promo bit.

Absolutely agree here! I bet a little bit of the bitter aftertaste I have now it's because I was expecting (ah! Xpectation) a darker, slower track and I was not ready for a 'The Last December"part 2.

I voted "Yes" on the new front page poll, but really, there should be a middle ground option, because that's where I'm at right now.

By the way, it's 100% Yes with only 3 votes. lol Who are the other two that voted? Are Prince and Larry orgers?

Ok I listened to it. I agree with most people that this sounds like a leftover track from Lotus Flower. I play Lotus Flower all the time but this song has no structure and no magic. The lyrics and guitar solo at the end was cool but that about it. The idea prob worked in his head but the song as a whole sounds off to me. It has moment's but that's it, nothing solid to take from it.
(Kind of like the Chocolate box song and video fiasco. rolleyes Why release one of the weakest songs on MPLS sound first with a bad concept video? Just all wrong IMO.)

I think that he needed an excuse to play some heavy rock guitar. If so, mission accomplished.
Maybe he has better stuff in the oven and this was just a 1 off?

I totally disagree! You can't just take one line out of context (well, you can - but it doesn't help in the search for meaning). Look at the entire thought:

if you stamp your passport full of regret
you have nothing to remember but a lot to forget

He's saying he doesn't regret the past (and that others shouldn't, either). That it's all a part of who he is. Cause and effect. Ya dig?

someone else pointed that out to me already and i've come to see
the error of my ways, lol.

it's not about his 80s work at all. the song is about growin up
and maturing.

if anything, he says he'd like to tell his former self that he's
up for an amazing ride.

he seems to regret some of his actions though, but hey, we all
do. i know i've wished in the past that i could go back and have
a sit down with my former self and say "listen up, that is
probably not the best idea you've got right there".

lol

Growing up...but not growing old. The whole thing about not being a subject to any other man isn't only about his faith - it's him saying he hasn't gotten old and he's still a rebel, at heart.
We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I like the direction - guitar but the song is not one that deserved this much hype. Then again, all he did was put it on one local station...he knows people are going to go beserk here which makes me believe he's reading or has someone read the reactions.

So, if you're listening - I loved Lotus, but you need to check out Jesse's Verbal Penetration. That first track is what you need to replicate!smile

love the new stuff by JJ.
of course,,how long did it take him to come out with something new?

Good point on the fact P just put this out on a local station....maybe he is just wanting some feedback or is giving a little gift to listners/fans.
I think we as fans/fams/followers of his work get ourselves all worked up
and can only be let down most of the time, just because of our own hopes for a monster jam of some kind. I like the song more now that Ive heard it a few more times. It is like that with all of his songs,,,once I hear em a few more times , i get it.
We need to ask what was his intention on giving this song?
I dont think it was to try to have a radio hit.
I think it was just a shout out and gesture to that local radio station whom
he now has a fondness for. Lets not make this out to be more than what it is.
Just enjoy and if not,,,,play one of his countless jams u do enjoy.

Ok listen, let's be fair...

We need to look at this objectively. One mans trash is another man's treasure.

This song is a work of fArt. So we need to see it as a work of fArt, and judge it accordingly.

kind of what i expected and kind of not.

i expected heavy guitars and drums. got it.

with the references to 'when doves cry' in the pre-release statement, i was also expecting a more traditional song structure with great verses and then a killer chorus.

instead it reminds me a little of 'joint 2 joint' , kind of like a suite rather than a simple pop song.

i was kind of hoping for a simple pop song, but i like it nonetheless.
i will put it on my ipod on the lotusflower cd (which in an edited format is one of my favorite Prince albums; c'mon Boom, Colonized Mind, Dreamer are KILLER! though not the best among them, i think it fits perfectly with those songs.

So while i am the first one to cut down P and his preachy stuff; I have to say that while not what i thought it was going to be, I think its pretty good.
