1) Graffiti Bridge (the movie). I would have rather been given chemo once I figured out how much it was going to suck.

2) We all spent a day in the sun and just hanging out with a boom box at a State Park when I was 12 years old. My friends brought Motley Crew's "Theatre of Pain" and Van Halen's album with the song "Jump" on it. I brought "PARADE", and lawd when "Do U Lie" came on, did they ever bust out laughing. They made me play it twice to savor the comedy. lol lol lol
They laughed at "Sometimes it Snows in April" and "Under the Cherry Moon" too, but not as hard as at "Do U Lie" lol

3) I was an adult by this time, but my roomate and I were cleaning the house, and I played one of the disks from Emancipation. The Song was "Soul Sanctuary" and the part where Prince gets all helium-high pitched and shit, my roomate literally yelled out with a disgusted look on his face, "Dan!!! OMG, Dan!"

I was an adult by then and didn't really care what he thought though. I just busted out laughing cause how does one really explain Prince's fey moments like that? lol It's just Prince.

What songs have you shared with other non Prince friends and you were embarrassed when Prince let out a scream or did something bizarre? Like you wanted to turn the volume down for that part?

Like God Vocal is a good example. I mean I can listen to it and like it. But my friends who did not listen to Prince....

Yes, when he screams I find an excuse to turn it down or skip to the next song. cool

About 10 of my friends were chilling in mine once & I had my i-pod on shuffle. We were having quite a serious discussion at the time so I didn't notice "Something in the Water" was playing. The discussion reached a very awkard & serious moment where everyone went silent. At that moment I realised what song was playing but by then it was already too late....

Thats what I am talking about.

Suggesting someone is mental because they do this is mental in itself. Keep it light people!. A fun thread here not a serious one. If you don't do this then no reason to respond. But obviously several other people are familiar with this topic.

Being enbarrassed by Prnce music only when you are with others is really your problem. I would do some self inventory to find an explanation for that.

Now your pulling a Prince....LOL...I am embarrassed by this comment. Skip forward to the next track. LOL

Come on my friend lighten up!

I don't really play Prince for friends anymore unless it's NEWS or some other instrumental tracks w/o vocals. They just don't get. I have a few friends that are really into music & I'll make them mixed cd's but that's about it nowadays. I usually only share Prince w/ my wife. I recently played the boot Box O Chocolates for her & she hated Wonderful Ass & the version of Starfish & Coffee, so I guess 9 of 11 ain't too bad for a casual fan.

there are, however, also some unexpected moments of interest from people
when a prince song comes up.

i made a mixed tape of prince tunes for a good friend of mine who was
interested in him, during the mid/late 90s.

we used to go out to clubs with a group of friends and we'd always take
a ride with these 2 metalheads who listened to nothing but deathmetal,
which was hell to have to sit through in the car.

but since my friend was a beautiful girl, she'd always get them to put
something on that she'd bring.

so one time, she gave them the mixed prince tape and i was dreading
what they were gonna say about it.

but they just started analyzing the bass and guitar playing and were
impressed, to say the least. kept rewinding bits and yelling "who is
this bassplayer? who is this on guitar?"

their favorit song was the glam slam miami funk freakout on "days of
wild".

but there's also those people who you'd like to slap for lame stuff
they say.

i had a guy over for the first time, having some drinks and talking,
and i had my computer on shuffle very softly in the BG when prince's
"soul sanctuary" came on and he just started yelling "what the hell
is this? turn it off, turn it off. ewwww you listen to horrible music
man. ewwww".

i was like :wtf: ?

i can understand people not liking something but i'd never go to
someone's house or sit in their car and complain about their stuff,
unless it was totall loud and intrusive. i'd even sit through half
an hour of deathmetal in that friend's car whenever i had to since
it was their car and i got a free ride anyway.

some people are just rude lol
and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

OMG! The EXACT same thing happened 2 me. Same scenario as well! I was dating this girl when I was in high school back in 2000. She wasn't a big Prince fan but she seemed 2 love the mid tempo funky groove 2 "letitgo" so she cranked it up. Before I took her home we went 2 the gas station and I cut it up louder pretending like I was just feeling the music lol When I came back from paying, "Orgasm" was playing loudly and she had this mortified look on her face, but 4 the life of me I dont understand why she just didn't turn it down, especially seeing as how it was a warm spring day and we had the windows down! That was so funny but she was embarrased lol

did you get the girl?

Lol... yes wink She replied to me when I hurried in the car and skipped to the next track.... some thin in the way of " Is this expected from Prince fans? " hmmm... I already made a song for her, that I played to her the same night, so she was sold smile Funny... I could swear she must have known that song already.

I got one.

Backstage before a show in '89, I had my brand-new 'Batman' cassette blasting (I realize now that I was trying to convince myself that I just loved what I later came to understand was the first non-completely-brilliant Prince album of the 80's).

'Scandalous' was on, and this one actor was making fun of it. That alone wouldn't bother me - people can like or dislike what they want. But the guy was singing along, hitting the same notes, and he sounded about as good as Prince did...

That pissed me off! mad

Are you kidding me?
My text message tone on my phone played the "She took a whip to me until I shout, OH MOTHERFUCKER, SHE'S A MOTHERFUCKER CAN'T YOU UNDERSTAND?! " part from "Sister"... loudly.
I was on a bus with a friend of mine and she looked at me like she wanted to die when it went off. Fuck what people think.

My ringtone is "Hey, you're a crazy bitch, but you ____ so good, I'm top of it, when I dream, I'm doin' you all night...." It's LOUD too for some reason; louder than my other ring tones I've bought. But it raises a few eyebrows in Target with the soccer moms when it goes off. hahaha

When I was in college, me and my buddies were playing cards in a dorm room and listening 2 the prince album. At one point there was a brief moment of silence in between conversations, and all of a sudden Prince blurted out the line "I'll be standing naked with nothing but a smile on" from Blue Light.... and everyone all turned their heads towards the stereo and had this whofarted look on their face. It was.... yeah....

I don't need to care much about the lyrics since many people don't understand Enlish aurally in Japan.

What I have to care is a track like the last one on Come album.

Who here can tell me when they first heard Girl, the rolled down the windows and cranked it up?

Come on. I like it. But I know it's not the jam everyone wants to here.

Now give me days of wild and it's a different story.

That's the cool thing about Prince. Some of his songs are meant to be heard by just the listener and not a crowded room.

I experienced the same situation, just hanging out with friends and family talking with Prince playing in another room. At some point, the suddenly conversation stalled, the room got quiet and all we heard was"I gonna cover yo ass with this sheet" from "I Hate U". Fortunately they were cool and just laughed.

Ha - no it isn't. You guys take yourselves way too seriously.

Prince makes a lot of songs that are best enjoyed in private. Nothing kills the ride to a Metallica concert like "Solo" popping up on your iPod.

I submit that the people who lack self esteem so muich that they actually take responsibility for Prince's work when they need validation from others are the peope who are taking themselves too seriously - and should seek some counseling

Yea..Wedding feast forever ruined Prince with some of my friends. I made the mistake of leaving them in the car alone with my cds. They put in Rainbow Children and shuffled around some tracks. By the time I got back from getting the food, they were all singing it and laughing. There was nothing I could do to salvage the situation after that. Not even Purple Rain could convert them.
