Some people here seem to think that just because Trent Reznor is talking about things like depression, pain and addiction makes him 'more important' then people who dont touch these subjects.

The matter is: its how you deal with those subjects.

Reznor deals with them in the most blatant ways, coupled with his blatant take on industrial rock, its first of all toecurlingly pathetic.

The ironic thing is that people like Kurt Cobain and Trent Razor DID look up to Prince and have definately taken a lot of his ways on board.

But it's like it's NOW blown out of proportion and people are expressing their angst just because they think they should.

Prince's music was about what you felt in that 'moment', whether you felt happy or sad or whatever..

It didn't just mean expressing yourself because you were angry. Look at songs like Play In The Sunshine or Housequake. They are two examples of really positive, upbeat happy songs that you know he wrote because they would make people (ie us) smileand be happy.

Also Prince is able to look at the negative and positive. He may be unhappy but he's still got God in his life. ie Anna Stesia. It goes from being a really depressing song about the loneliness and confusion of life to an uplifting celebration of his connection to God.

These people don't know how to express that. They only know how to express the negative.

And the sad thing is I do think sometimes Prince copies them. It's all got mixed up and confused.

It's like the older brother ie Prince copying the cool younger brother ie Trent, Kurt, other indie boys..

Lol.. and double lol.. sad

Whats with those NIN fans constantly whining about the Prince 'connection' in here?

Trent Reznor is musically a cheap rip off of Ministry, and lyrically an annoying poser not very different from all those 'hip' emo-bands.

NIN-fans are as annoying as Tool-fans: they take their artists SO seriously, dwelling in their shared misery, thinking those artists are so wise and 'important', when its about nothing more then banal posures.

Wow! finally a topic worth following here, you are sooo right, Tool fans, NIN fans and Radiohead fans think that the more complicated, the more esotheric and the more experimental means good music. Don't get me wrong, I love this bands, they have great music but after the mid 90's it became a cliche to try to be deep and weird.

A few weeks ago I got into one of those forums were people commented about the greatest masterpieces ever, most of the reviews were done by the people who think that music started with the alternative scene of the late 80's, you know the Pitchfork/stereogum audience, lots of praises to The Pixies, Bjork and ocourse Radiohead, but when it came up to Purple Rain some of them say things like "I don't get the hype, the lyrics are two dimensional for me" like if the only thing to make a good album is been deep and arty.

I understand very much the whole philosophical themes of NIN or Radiohead, I use to like Tool and Bjork surrealism expressions too, but it became a sheep mimick really soon, my friends who like Tool just keep on relaying on the alucinatory trips of their music to say they are bad ass (the Pink Floyd syndrome), they don't even care if the band keep doing the same stuff over and over. Trent Reznor (NIN) is stuck on the 90's thniking that anger and bitterness stil rule the music scene, Bjork and Radiohead are turning into a cartoon of themselves: pretentious overelaborated music, with slow motion music videos and with a "look at me I'm in pain" credo.

There's a reason why the new rock scene became so warm and fun, if you look at the least comercial or super cool indie acts, you will see revolution trough hapiness and dance (M.I.A.), philosphical lyrics trough fun pop (MGMT), arty and experimental sound trough funk and the spiritual world (TV on the Radio), even great heavy rock trough love and sensibility (Wolf mother). No "I don't want to be a star" nonsense.

The few 90's act that really evolve are Beck and Jack White.

Can't argue with most of this although, be fair, "one of the most critically acclaimed and commercially succesful rock artists of all time" is overstating it a bit, don't you think?

Hey the same thing happen to me, I went out with a girl who was all alternative and shit, but she din't knew nothing about soul, r&b and funk, it remind me of those Radiohead fans who went over Prince after the Creep cover, like if rock music should be just one thing :3 dimmensional, torture poet bull shit.

I remember some one say in here that Radiohead fans din't dig Prince and Prince fans they do dig Radiohead, suggesting that Radiohead appeal to more people, but what that really means is that most of Prince fans are more cultivated then alternative music fans, we apreciate jazz, funk, soul, disco, dance, r&b, punk, glam, alt etc. because Prince music is a perfect mix of those genres.

Yes, so well said.

I also think that Prince's music goes over their heads. It's too clever for them and they can't relate to it. They can only relate to Radiohead because it is in their comfort zone.

They also relate to the 'look' of these Indie bands because they are mainly middle-class white boys. They feel comfortable with this they feel an affinity with it. But also it allows them to wallow in their own misery and it doesn't challenge them at all.

I disagree that bands like Radiohead are deep. They are sort of superficially deep, or faux deep as I like to say.

When you scratch the surface and analyse what they are singing about it is not much at all. It's like surface level deep.

And yep, I know there are going to be a million people saying they 'DO' have deep shit like Creep and No Surprises but sometimes you break apart other parts of their music and it's like 'Hey? What's this about???'

So then to say Radiohead or some other Indie Band is better than Prince - well you could analyse Tamborine or Starfish and Coffee and there is more going on in these songs than many of theirs. And they're not even anywhere near Prince's deepest songs..

That's the beauty of Prince - he can give depth to anything because he really thinks about what he's writing about. Well a lot of the time anyway..

But yep I was at Coachella (ahem have I mentioned that before lol ) and I was stood next to the most miserable people. Then when Prince started playing Creep it was like 'Wow..he's plaaaaaying Creep??!!'

They didn't get it, because they actually 'do' think Prince is a creepy weirdo.

Most of them have have never listened to his music.. or they certainly haven't understood him...

And I'm probably not making any sense...??

It's late.. lol I'm going to bed.. sad

Don't take me there girl! I totally agree with you, In fact I have many discussions about it with sooo many people. Their lyrics are really pretentious and their sound is so overelaborated, they try so hard to be artsy. But the worst thing is that Thom Yorke is so hypocrital, he sells this image of a torture soul, he say he doesn't have a good voice, he suffers for the world, he talks about third world countrys poorness etc.,while he wears 3000 dlls glasses, make music for Twilight and go to the Grammys, there's nothing wrong with doing this things but Radiohead was against the industry monopoly, they represent the so called rebellious alternative scene that was so anti-mainstream, their fans really belive that Yorke is kinda like this humble honest man: "he so real like us".

If I see another Radiohead slow mo video I will puke.

High Five brother!

Me and you are so there!!

Enough of this faux teenage angst crap... these people need to grow up and get with the programme.

And they need to grow a major sense of humour..

Could any of these bands write the lyrics...

They just take themselves far too seriously the lot of them.

Don't be ridiculous.

Trent is the artist, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and producer behind the band Nine Inch Nails. He's the one that produces all them music and writes all the songs. It's not even fair to call Nine Inch Nails a band really, as it's just Trent and the other members are always revolving and just used for live shows (although Trent has just retired NIN as a touring band)

He's one of the most critically acclaimed and commercially succesful rock artists of all time, as well as being a pioneer of new music industry business models since splitting with his longtime label Interscope back in 2007.

He's a genius and amazing musician and up there with Prince, not just as one of my favorite artists of all time, but as one of my most respected artists due to the fact that he also produces and plays everything himself, and has been a pioneer in the music industry. It's these reasons why he gets mentioned a lot on these forums and why some people feel the need to make snotty comments such as the one above. Grow up.

You got to be kidding me...!

I mean for me. I can explain exactly why too, but I get the feeling that you wouldn't care anyway.

she wouldn't..
of course for you, thats a legit statement...and thats perfectly fine and you explained your point of view fairly clearly earlier...that's the problem with this forum, any discussion about P and other artists turns into a 'Prince is the awesomest ever and no others can compare' fest...what could be a decent discussion about matters of opinion turns into a crappy, one sided "my Prince opinion is fact" discussion...

It din't bother me but I guess it shows your ignorance and bad manners: "you silly kids still talking about this bullshit??" if you have so many cool topics to talk about why bother to comment?

ThreadBare

I've heard "Had U" owes a lot to Trent and NIN's influence. I've always heard a Santana/Hendrix touch, personally.

Either way, gorgeous arrangement.

I hope your not a 12 year old kid.

let's be real here...my comment was no more ignorant or rude than some of the bloated opinions expressed in other posts in this very thread...

reading some of these posts, it's been perfectly fine to dismiss anothers musical taste or opinion of another artist...

you expressed that "most of Prince fans are more cultivated then alternative music fans"...I literally laughed out loud when I read that..this forum proves on a daily basis just how uncultivated some Prince fans can be...

yet, this discussion comes up numerous times a year, on a Prince fan site, by Prince fans, comparing Prince to (insert artist here)...

and there's always a few that believe that Prince is untouchable on any level and that any one with a differing opinion is immature, ignorant, unimformed or just plain stupid...then there are some that can take off the paisley and lace blinders and look beyond all their own pretentious opinions and have a valid discussion without resorting to a full on attack of anothers personal preference..

I'm sorry, I didn't come armed with any cool topics of my own, so I checked this thread out thinking it may have some potential...lesson learned

but just as a show of good faith and no hard feelings, c'mere and give me a hug...hug

MY ANSWERS ARE WITH ***

***Still doesn't justified it.

***Well, I know many Prince fans and they are quite cultivated, most of them love all kinds of music, most of Radiohead fans just listen to Bjork, Muse and Radiohead wanna b's, I mean don't look on the org. go to the alternative forums like Pitchfork and Stereogum, It's a well know facts that those sites suport mainly 90's alt rock. But the Creep cover reaction is enough to see the ignorance of some of the alternative music fans. By the way I think prince.org forums have so many cultivated people.

yet, this discussion comes up numerous times a year, on a Prince fan site, by Prince fans, comparing Prince to (insert artist here)...

*** You are right, but my comments were based on someone else comment trashing Prince just for the sake of it and praising NIN with no facts.

I'm sorry, I didn't come armed with any cool topics of my own, so I checked this thread out thinking it may have some potential...lesson learned

***Well, your "silly kids" and "bullshit" say enough of your intentions, you don't have to explain, no lesson to learn here.

but just as a show of good faith and no hard feelings, c'mere and give me a hug...hug

***Hug to you with love smile

By the way I love NIN and most of alt music, my comments got nothing to do with my musical taste.

Peace.
