World Music Awards Wants Prince to do MJ Tribute ---Update

http://www.drfunkenberry....rformance/

UPDATE: It seems the WMA’s are just TRYING to bring attention to themselves so file this under FALSE rumor.
According to the World Music Awards, they are letting it be known they are in talks with Prince to do a tribute performance to Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson will be accepting an award on her brother’s behalf.

We have not heard anything on our end about Prince performing at the Award show, let alone doing a tribute to Michael Jackson. The award show is not taped until October but is taped in Monaco where Prince is slated to perform next week.

Is the World Music Awards that big? Surprised the MTV Awards, American Music Awards or Grammys have not been trying to get Prince to perform a tribute on their shows. MTV will most likely tap Chris Brown to do it.

We will let you know if we hear anything about this Purple Rumor.-Dr.FB

If my memory is correct, Prince played WMA in 1994. He performed 'The Most Beautiful Girl in the World'. He then played some concerts for the Prince of Monaco and premiered many of the tracks that would form 'The Gold Experience'.

But WHY, people insist on linking Prince with MJ or expect comments/tributes is beyond me. Prince gave no comment to James Browns passing beyond a line of his website and Brown is an influence. MJ, to my mind, has no connection musically to Prince at all. Or personally for that matter.

If Prince do this, man,I wont even be mad that his music is muted on youtube anymore.I swear I would just cry,an rub it in my friends face(because they all think MJ is better) and say,"Yeah who honored MJ?Chris Brown no.Prince did."

Probably because he was one of the big artists of the 80s (alongside Michael Jackson and Madonna).
I don't think a tribute done by Madonna would be anywhere near as good!

I agree. There seems to be a demand for this. The only one fitting to do an MJ tribute is Prince. I don't think those little punk ass imitators like Chris Brown are fit to lick the shit off Prince or MJ's shoes, musically. I am not impressed with these so called talents who spend years copying the greats. What ever happened to being original?

I dont thik he would do it and I hope he wouldn't. However you look at it, it would come across as deferential in the worst way. That is not me slagging MJ (even tho I am not a fan) I just feel that it would appear as Prince knowing his place in some pop star hierarchy. Coz whatever we argue about Prince the musician, Prince the artist. Prince the genius... to MJ and big name consumers Prince is just another pop star who has had less success and so not as good, if they did not think this way they wouldnt buy that music in the first place. Also I dont think MJ fans would like it-I think possibly they might interpret it as Prince trying to have the last say. Even tho I dont think for a minute think P thinks like this (I believe he is already quite happily convinced of his superiority) I think he would be vary wary of having this association.

I think it would all depend on how it's done. People have paid tribute to their peers before. It is not necessarily selling out.

They all sounds like reasons as to why Prince WOULD do it!

He could of just played a song at one of his Montreux shows like hes done in the past and what other artist have done since MJ has passsed ie Madonna and N.E.R.D(the ones ive seen) but obviously the world music awards are gonna dedicate the whole show as a MJ tribute, for someone who doesn't celebrate death its coming over as being done for showing off/money and not with any sincerity at all.

let's say he does do this, what would he do? I'd love to see him hit the bassline on Billie Jean, he could do an instrumental medley tribute, without singing a note, and that would be cool. no?

For fuck sake give this shit a rest PLEASE:

definition of peer - a person or thing of the same rank, value, quality, ability, etc.; equal; specif.,

MJ is NOT in the same division!

I would add however, Prince could do a tribute to that man in his sleep if he chose, christ he could do a tribute to fucking Mozart if he put a little effort in.

Question is, could MJ have done a tribute to the purple genius? DONT MAKE ME FUCKING LAUGH!

Nah, just that if everyone is saying 'don't do it' or 'he knows his place now', it would be the impetus for him to go out there and blast out an MJ tune or two.

He can't do it, it would be embarrassing! He could only do it if he turned it into his own like he has been doing.

No basic pop songs for someone like Prince!

Prince didn't do anything for JB so, certainly nothing for MJ.

Also-how could he do it. When people think about MJ it is more of an image thing. If P got hold of Billie Jean or other song he would tear it up, add jams and do it as he sees fit.People associate these things with the jerky movements and the videos-the songs are almost inconsequential (dont berate me for that-its easy listening with a sharp video-please dont fight me on that one) Prince could not lock himself into that simple equation. Either way he would lose
1.Smash it up and look like he's peeing on MJ's ability or
2 Do a standard cover version and not dance coz Prince is a groover and not part of a 10 piece choreography troupe (Thank the Lord)

I wish people would stop saying this crap about MJ. I watched the funeral and (I know this is gonna be moved to another thread) and could not believe the way the American Black community reclaimed him-firstly it was embarrasing and secondly it was bullshit. MJ is as a result of racism easing off in America not a contributing factor to race relations. MJ did not go to MTV like some Martin Luther King-they played his video because it was catchy and visual and they played it because they weren't as racist.Success does not mean you have broken down boundaries-it probably means pioneers have broken them down. MJ could not sell 28 million copies of Thriller in the US alone if it was driven by racism-you dont convert that many people in 12 months. If Michael Jackson represented half as much as you give him credit for trust me he would not be a tenth as successful as he was. Pop music for Pop fans-cant his fans be grateful for that-it is quite an achievement-but please stop projecting the History Of Mankind on to him as well

Wouldn't surprise me, considering what I have been saying here about Prince being impacted by Micheal's death.

Still, a tribute seems out of the ordinary 4 P.

I think it would be awesome if Prince did an MJ tribute. They were peers and they respected each others work. It would be great if Prince did something totally out of left field by doing this. I believe it he would do an incredible job and it would be very tastefully done.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

MTV was predominantly a rock orientated station back then, 'Little Red Corvette' only got play cause of the nature of the song, if MJ didn't come so big, it's unlikely P would have got regular airplay again.

Michael forced MTV to play a wider range of Black music.
