This would only work if Prince and his band just muscled through versions of Jackson songs with musical prowess, with a guest vocalist (not Prince!), and guest dancers (Like Timberlake, C Brown, or auditioned new cool street dancer talent). So in essence, Prince would do his part as a coolest of cools MUSICIAN for a tribute.

Thus, Prince would retain his "Prince" brand separate from Jackson.

I think U will find that Prince opened the door for MJ on MTV.

MTV was predominantly a rock orientated station back then, 'Little Red Corvette' only got play cause of the nature of the song, if MJ didn't come so big, it's unlikely P would have got regular airplay again.

Michael forced MTV to play a wider range of Black music.

Yes and the MJ music got played for the same reason-it wasnt exactly NWA. Bloody hell if the MJ stuff was any lighter you'd need to put a paper weight on it before you could play it. Until today I've been restrained about these types of comments but good god people no wonder the world is screwed over

blah fucking blah...

for fuck sake what has happened to the facts!!! LRC was the first major song by a black artist to get regular airplay on MT fuckin V!! alongside the non rock track 1999!!!!!

What's next MJ put the guitar/piano/drums/22 fucking instruments in purple boys hands and made him play them fucking all..GIVE IT A FUCKING REST. MJ was a very talented singer/dancer THAT IS ALL.

He was also, I may add a very dubious character who has had some serious accusations/trials against said character, just because he is fucking dead it does not mean HISstory can be rewritten!

Wouldn't that be more proof to them that MJ is better? I don't get that argument.

IMHO i don't think prince should do it. He shouldn't be paid or be put on the spotlight to do a michael jackson tribute.
Us prince fans already know that he has performed jackson songs, jackson 5 songs and even a janet jackson song.
Prince respected michael even before his death so why should he have to now please the people especially those involved with the world music awards to do sometyhing like this.
If they want to do a michael jackson tribute they should let the remaining jackson 5, janet jackson or those young performers who were influenced by michael to do the tribute.
Prince shouldn't be talked into this, if anything he should tribute michael in his own way guitar and when he wants to wink

If Prince says his prayers about this and he genuinely wants to do it, he should go for it.

Doesn't sound like a good idea.

To MJ fans and to Prince fans who don't elusively like one or the other, it would seem like a perfect tribute.

To the general public, it wouldn't be any different then Debbie Gibson performing Tiffany songs--fodder for humor.

I think it would be awesome if Prince did an MJ tribute. They were peers and they respected each others work. It would be great if Prince did something totally out of left field by doing this. I believe it he would do an incredible job and it would be very tastefully done.

Yes, I couldn't agree with you more, Purplecam.

I remember reading someone on this forum said Prince shouldn't be talked into that.
It being said that "they are in talks with Prince", doesn't necessarily have to mean anyone is "talking him into it". I don't believe this is something another person can "talk you into". It's a matter of the heart and it's a matter of true respect.

If it is Prince's wish to do this with genuine devotion, he should, and: I'm sure it's gonna be awesome!

http://www.drfunkenberry.com/2009/08/07/world-music-awards-says-it-is-in-talks-with-prince-to-do-a-michael-jackson-tribute-performance/

According to the World Music Awards, they are letting it be known they are in talks with Prince to do a tribute performance to Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson will be accepting an award on her brother’s behalf.

We have not heard anything on our end about Prince performing at the Award show, let alone doing a tribute to Michael Jackson. The award show is not taped until October but is taped in Monaco where Prince is slated to perform next week.

Is the World Music Awards that big? Surprised the MTV Awards, American Music Awards or Grammys have not been trying to get Prince to perform a tribute on their shows. MTV will most likely tap Chris Brown to do it.

We will let you know if we hear anything about this Purple Rumor.-Dr.FB

can someone tell me where is the awards being held....Monaco? and what date? just curious if it's around the time he will be per4ming at Monaco Opera House.

Why do some people here keep saying things like:
- he should do it, they both were 'big' around the same time
- they were both peers / rivals in the eighties
Like Prince 'owes' MJ something?

IMO the Prince vs MJ-thing has always been a fan-thing in the first place. People were and are exaggerating some non-existing battle in their mind: I have read that MJ saw Prince as a competitor, but I have never read Prince saying the same about MJ. He seemed to respect MJ, but its not like he really cared about which way MJ's career and music were going.

Just because they are both afro-american and did reach their commercial peak around the same time, doesnt mean they are automatically 'connected'.

Princes owes Michael nothing. MJ wasnt a main influence on his music and he didnt seem concerned at all with 'beating him'.

If anything, i think its far more 'logical' to expect a Prince-hommage when Joni Mitchell dies, or Sly Stone (not hoping for that, of course).

Fact: Michael was publicly accused of child molestation twice.

Fact: Michael died of a drug overdose. Whether administered by himself or someone else, he had an apparent history of drug abuse. You don't just develop a knowledge of all those high power anesthetics over night, and from all reports he went to great lengths to get them for a number of years.

There is no honor in the way he died.

He is only now being so widely 'worshipped' in the media and by Joe Public because he died.

Even six months ago he was just the butt of a lot of jokes about his appearance, his fondness for little boys, his speaking voice and mannerisms.
He was a parody of himself. (Much the way Prince is becoming/has become.)

He wasn't known for music or dancing prior to his death.
He was known for his shenanigans, baby waving, face mask wearing, plastic surgery obession.

The best thing Prince could do is stay as far away from this as he can.
He should not affiliate himself with Jackson any more than he already is, as people have enough opinions about his own penchant for cross-dressing, and public persona.

He doesn't owe Jackson anything.

Sorry, somebody had to say it.
Seems a lot of you people jumped on the band wagon when he died and forgot what you were thinking and saying about him even a year ago.

I would be completely shocked if he did this. Prince just isnt the type unfortunately. It would be incredible, if his HEART was in it. If his heart isnt in it, id rather him not do it. He'll just get up there and try to be all sexy, and sing in a falsetto voice, and thats not what a tribute is about.
