Listening to the Montreux shows

I'm going to give them a proper listen tomorrow, but I just listened to "In a Large Room With No Light" and "Purple Rain" from the second show.

They sound freaking incredible. "Purple Rain" in particular.....WOW. This could be from '85, it's THAT good. What an amazing, inspired, innovative performance of a legendary song, with perhaps the tightest band unit he's had in a while.

My mind has been blown.

I love the brilliant small band with space concept.

We have very good imaginations. Clear all thoughts, and cultivate the sound of silence... then you will hear both shows as if your ears were sitting right there.
Change it one more time..

I love 'All Shook Up' and 'Little Red Corvette' from the 2nd show.

He basically sings all of LRC, minus the "Girl you got an @ss like I've never seen" part.

Funny, I was gonna create a post asking people what they thought of his live renditions of Purple Rain. Not the song itself but the soloing. I've (preparing to get blasted into outerspace) always thought he plays his double-bends flat. It's live so any guitarist can be forgiven a few mistakes, but it's on every live boot I have. Including this new Montreux one.

Personally I think the version Militant is talking about is just the usual performance he gives in the way that any band will play when they perform one of their hits for the 1,000,000,000th time. It may still be very very good but you just know that behind the personas are just a bunch of musicians playing by the numbers and smiling at the crowd. Even if they are having fun.

Cool. It's been a while since he has got further than the second verse and chorus.

Yeah, after the guitar solo, he comes back with the "A body like yours ought to be in jail" part. Then he talks some and gets the crow to repeat the "you got to slow down" part. The song goes about 6 minutes. Kinda cool.

I think we were all just used to Prince seeming to defy the ageing process. Right up into his 40s he just did not seem to change but we have all noticed the wrinkles and crows feet catching up with him in the last few years. This is natural, he is 51 years old, not worn out.
Just somewhere in the middle,
