U2 and Springteen had #1 albums this year; why can't Prince have one?

Did he blew it by releasing the album exclusively on Target or those artists just have bigger fan base? Considering all 3 acts had #1 albums in the 80s, it would have been nice if they did it again this year. Prince fell short. What could he have done? I think Prince should have made albums available on iTunes at least 2 increase first week sales.

There's no guarantee an iTunes download would have increased sales by any significant means. It means some people might have exchanged a CD for a digital copy. It could have still been held from foreign iTunes stores, and only made available to the US users. I think Lotus will end up somewhere else in another year or two, like iTunes.

Prince at least had a #1 in this decade, but even that was fishy.

The year is not over yet...and hopefully he will tour, which would help. Let's not 4get the fact that Bruce Springteen did the superbowl half-time show right around the time his cd came out. Also, Both Bruce & U2 had Rolling Stone covers( with glowing reviews-surprise surprise.(Isn't it funny how much Rolling Stone coddles BS & U2-either of them could put out a cd singing "happy birthday" and Rolling Stone would call it a classic and drool all over themselves). I think it's quite good that P got the #2 spot without all the hoopla-and he is #1 on TWO other charts!

Who really gives a shit, if prince was that popular, i am not sure most of us would be fans. I have seen both live, plus MJ, and believe me only U2 come near Prince live, Springsteen is boring and jackson is a...

Prince doesn't care about the charts, he just wants to get his music out there and is exploring new ways of doing so.

He is well aware of all business opportunities and does exactly what he wants and as he pleases.

...and there is nothing wrong with that.

if he had maybe made it a double album (mmm...sound familiar?) instead of a triple release - and sold it through more than just target then he'd have had a better chance.....but really who cares...I'd prefer to judge he albums by their merit rather than their sales....Lovesexy bombed but its one of my favourites....The Truth album was hidden amongst Crystal Ball but it is my favourite Prince album so far...same goes for TRC, Exodus, Gold, ATWIAD....hell even 1999 didn't sell as many as the albums released after it - does that make it a weaker album?

but yeah, I think its more a wake up call - he's just not 'touching the current generation' as he did in the 80's...and really that shouldn't be a surprise...he's not 'of' this current generation of 'pop' culture.... those days are gone - and the timing of Purple Rain etc etc just can't be repeated....move on....

being No.2 ain't too bad at all when u consider that he's had no major airplay for the last 10-15 years - except for his mid 80's 'old/classic' material....

They can't decide if he's rock, pop, soul, funk, or just plain weirdo, and it makes them uncomfortable to not be able to categorize every artist in their collection.

They clearly have bigger followings and always have. Prince despite his Purple Rain hysteria, has never been a HUGE seller, hes been consistent, but not huge.He has a very loyal following, like an REM, and just like REM had their "day" with mainstream love, Prince had his.

#2 debut is nothing to sneeze at.
