Im only 19 so wasn't blessed with the chance of being a fan since day one.

Though I don't believe it matters (Biased of course) A fan's a fan and I appreciate and LOVE his music just like an original fan would.

Someone recently said to me "blah blah, love Prince..reminds me of growing up" I said, same here really Ive grown up listening to his music because I chose to!

But yeah always heard bits and pieces of his of course but REALLY started getting into his stuff at 14-15...

Im new round here also! lol
All the critics love U in LDN!

I too was born in 78 and become completely hooked in 89 by the Batman Album, I remember always being aware of him and his music and even loving the Bangles Manic Monday and knowing it was written by Prince but not really having the thought prior that I was a fan.

Sometime around 1983/84 I was in a Night Club and was doing my 'new romantic' thing. That all changed when I heard '1999' blast out the speakers for the first time...it just blew me away. All the other music I was into just got up and left and for the next few months I obtained anything that was to do with the wee purple genius! Hooked and proud to say I still am, keep the faith children.

[i]Summer of '78. For You. Side 1 knocked me out. "Album" ended with I'm Yours. Thinking at the time that this guy was a year younger than me, later finding out that he is actually a year older, blew me away. I had friends in bands that were pretty good and they were equally blown away. A few of us saw Prince on the Rick James tour on April 12, 1980. True fans will be able to see where he was on that date because that info is out there. With the release of Dirty Mind later that year, I was convinced that not only was Prince not a fluke, but was somebody that was speaking my language. I could and can relate to everything he says in his songs. Nothing like that nasty, funky stuff from back in the day, but the man has evolved. He realizes that at 50, he shouldn't try to be 22. He gets all of my respect. Can't wait for the new music and tour. Really wishing he would put out a hard, funky, blazing guitar album. He definitely has it in him. Would love to hear him play Europa by Santana.

Yay - i'm not the only newbie!!
I know what you mean about being a younger fan....people can sometimes assume that just because you weren't around 'back in the day' that you can't possibly be a true fan! I would have loved to have been at some of the concerts in the '80's.

I love that song, I think I appreciated it more years later when I heard it during the Lovesexy show, the second half of the song(jam) has a melody that lulls me to groove

He played that recently at the 1st Avenue 7.7.07 aftershow:Sheila E. Wendy the Twinz Maceo and the rest of the band.

I would love for him to an all out jam of this and other songs like he did during the Dirty Mind -Purple Rain years. Long workouts

I'm very new to this site, tho i've been lurking for a while. One thing that strikes me is that a lot of you guys seem to be long-time Prince fans.
I was born in '78 and was never really aware of Prince music whilst growing up.
I remember hearing Cream and Peach as a teenager and thought they were okay..... then I heard tmbgitw and loved it!!!! I then brought Hits 1 and 2 and played them non stop, before getting most of the other albums!
I finally got to see him in London (tho only twice) during 21 nights. Amazing!

Dont remember a time when I wasnt a fan.....Even as a child I loved to listen to Prince.
Say it's just a dream...
U open up ur eyes and come 2 realize
u simply imagined this
So u lean over and give her a kiss
Here on earth, here on earth,
with u it's not so bad
Here on earth, here on earth
eye don't feel so sad
Stay right here

One day I farted and purple gas came out of my arse, so I thought, "Hmmm.....what else is associated with purple other than Jimi Hendrix who I already dug?" I guess it could've either been Prince, that fuckin purple tellytubby, or that other purple muthafucka named Barney the dinosaur. I guess Prince was the better option then. Hence I am now a Prince fan....cuz I done farted purple.

I was first conscious of Prince in 1985 after hearing Raspberry Beret, thinking what a weird song (At the time I was 9 and into Boy George, Madonna and Michael Jackson), and I kind of followed Lovesexy (SOTT may have been a bit deep for me b4 my 11th birthday), loved Batman, didn't really notice GB. By that stage I was caught up in Milli Vanilli confused (Cried the day they were unmasked as lipsyncers), Young MC and MC Hammer eek (Sad). Late 1990 and early 91 saw me go nuts over Color Me Badd (Why!!!!) eek .
Finally when Cream came out in late 91 I took notice, and saw the video at a friends house and thought "That Prince is just so weird and so dirty" I also realised he is very funky and realised he was also behind all his own music and many others like Martika. I realised I had found the artist I had wanted to worship all my life, sometime who was dirty, funky and had incredible musical talent as well as not needing a gimmick. I was hooked, and had bought his whole back catalogue within 2 years. biggrin
