That's kickass. Purple Rain is right where it belongs, at number 1. I knew there was a reason why I subscribe to Entertainment Weekly!
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I think this is real cool considering Prince never gets number one on any of these lists. Whether it's best album, song, live performer, guitarist, etc, he's always behind people that he's better than.

This list is a complete joke. But, yes, PR belongs at the top.

first post for me smile but i had 2 say something here.. as much as i love Michael Jackson's Thriller, its REALLY refreshing 2 c a "top 10 albums of the last 25 years" without it! especially after 'Thriller25' made it almost a necessity 2 do so... anyways, headbang GO PRINCE headbang

Consider the source & move on, people. It's Entertainment Weekly, not the Library of Congress.

Yeah, no SOTT and Flaming Lips' Soft Bulletin is below Mariah Carey?? Actually, you could list any number of completely bizarre entries...Bob Marley Legend below Notorious BIG and Fiona Apple? Entertainment Weekly: you don't have to be deaf to work here, but it helps.

I own 16 of those albums.

Can't say I agree with alot on that list. No Doubt "Rock Steady" is a classic, but "Tragic Kingdom" is not???

Jay-Z's "Blueprint"?? Even in just the Jay-Z catalog"Blueprint" is not top dog.

Nine Inch Nails "Downward Spiral" is on the list, but no "Pretty Hate Machine"???

...please...

Wow, I'm shocked.
Prince usually doesn't get that kind of love or recognition.

Since "Thriller" was released in 82, and their list is from, 83-2007, i'm sure EW would have chosen that as their #1,since the list seems to be based more on their hype of the last 25 yrs.

I never get worked up over lists like these, but cute to see little Prince-y in at number one. I've been in a Purple Rain-era mode lately, so I'm happy it's there. The ones on the list that I love:

1. Purple Rain Prince and the Revolution (1984)
5. Madonna Madonna (1983)
12. Stankonia OutKast (2000)
14. Disintegration The Cure (1989)
22. 3 Feet High and Rising De La Soul (1989)
30. Appetite for Destruction Guns N' Roses (1987)
38. Raising Hell Run-DMC (1986)
43. Paul's Boutique Beastie Boys (1989)
51. The Score Fugees (1996)
54. Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 Janet Jackson (1989)
55. It Takes a Nation of Millions... Public Enemy (1988)
59. Ray of Light Madonna (1998)
61. Paid in Full Eric B. & Rakim (1987)
62. OK Computer Radiohead (1997)
63. The Joshua Tree U2 (1987)
66. The Chronic Dr. Dre (1992)
70. My Life Mary J. Blige (1994)
72. 1984 Van Halen (1984)
77. Dummy Portishead (1994)
85. Home Dixie Chicks (2002)
94. Synchronicity The Police (1983)
99. Live Through This Hole (1994)
100. Faith George Michael (1987)

There are others on there that I like, but those are my classics.

i wonder if it has something to do with recent sales in a certain period of time. At Best Buy every time I buy something from there they are always pushing you to buy a subscription to E.W. NO!!!! for the hundredth time! stab

I think the EW-list is about (100) albums that have helped to shape and define the music of the last 25 years, and it that sense it gives quite a good idea about the music from that period i think.

That also explains why sometimes not 'the best' albums from certain artists are included. I mean, i think most Radiohead-fans will surely rate OK Computer, higher then in Rainbows, right?

it could be argued that "in rainbows" has had a larger effect on the music industry than "ok computer", but i also think "ok computer" launched a lot of bands influenced by that album, so it's kind of a toss-up...though i think "ok computer" was a way more groundbreaking album from an artistic point of view.

Well, Anxiety, i guess EW was going for some kind of 'hipster' list: They probably thought, hey, everyone chooses OK Computer, why not go for "In rainbows" instead?

I mean, Kayne West and Jay Z... In terms of musical impact, shouldnt Public Enemy be above them?

And what is Lauryn Hill doing on that nr. 2 spot? what about Bjorks Homogenic or Vespertine?

Just a few examples to illustrate EW are probably going for the 'hipness' here.

Easy there, homie. Thriller is 1982 (the list is past 25 years) and Appetite for Destruction is on there.

Nothing against Mr. Rodgers but.... There's a lot of not so great albums on that list. Purple Rain deserves it's place. Obviously not of his other albums were considered....Sign O The Times??? I personally love Chaos Disorder. All of em should be on this list.
