Well, probably. I mean, how dare I? All Prince fans must like Purple Rain.

Sure, a tired song, as in; played too often. Not drab like Diamonds & Pearls or Nothing Compares 2 U, but tired. If Prince does not retire, as I think he should, mostly making the kind of mush he has the last decade, then just retire that one song.
Pretty please, Prince.

It's not 'tired' as you put it - you just don't like it - go on - admit it - I dare you?

And if you think Prince is mush why are you actually listening to him????

oh that song is so tired when u factor in the 60+ dates on the purple rain tour, the 20 odd dates of parade, x amount of times during sott tour, x amount of lovesexy dates, 51 nude tour dates, x amount of diamonds and pearls tour, x amount of act 1 and act 2 tours, gold experience perhaps less than 10 (THANK GOD), and so on and so on ..YEAH IT'S TIME THAT SONG GETS PUT OUT 2 PASTURE!!!
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

I must be misunderstanding you - you aren't saying Prince wouldn't let Elvis cover Pop Life are you? I mean that would be a ridiculous statement since Elvis died about 7 or 8 years before Pop Life was recorded.

Prince's Creep lyrics (what I got):

...
...just like an angels
Skin makes you cry
I float like a feather
In this beautiful world
You wish you where special
So do I

You're a...
You're a liar
What are you doing here
You don't belong here

You don't care if it hurts
You just want to have control
You want a perfect body
You want a perfect soul
You want me notice
(yes you do)
When you're not around
I wish you were special
Cause I think you're special

Maybe I am just a...
...liar...
What are we doing here
We don't belong here

Prince ruined the lyrics and made what is an ironic teen anthem into a old man's new age concert jam. disbelief

Creep is NOT ironic. It's a song about self-loathing and about expressing your deepest fears through a song.

Prince was trying to turn it around and say like yourself.. Hence the word changes in the lyrics to 'I believe I am special'

It's like the older Prince talking to the younger Prince AND the younger generation in general.

He's telling us to appreciate ourselves and love ourselves NOT be full of self loathing..

But ironically that is what he was like when he was younger..that's why he's very equiped to tell us this I think

Which songs/lyrics in particular evidence Prince's self-loathing as a young man?

I think most of us do understand what Prince was saying when he sang the song - simplistic new age stuff - Just that some didn't think that it was an improvement on the original, quite the opposite.

changing the lyrics of his own songs, when performed live, is evidence of that!

Creep is a very average tune.

And Radiohead can be easily top at their own songs. Prince just gave the evidence. He turned this tune into an a melodic and poweful anthem.

Prince has some talent to turn crap tunes into brillant ones. Magic.

I liked the cover overall. Great guitar and it was interesting to hear his take on it but I wasn't keen on the lyrical changes (I knew he'd filter out the 'bad' words but I didn't think he'd rewrite the song)

But the original is better. Very few covers beat the original and that wasn't one of them imho. That having been said, I wouldn't mind hearing it live and his set is getting stale. I know he mixes it up but some weak songs keep being played - for example, knowing what he could play, hearing the opening of 'Lolita' is a downer for me.
