Creep is NOT ironic. It's a song about self-loathing and about expressing your deepest fears through a song.

Prince was trying to turn it around and say like yourself.. Hence the word changes in the lyrics to 'I believe I am special'

It's like the older Prince talking to the younger Prince AND the younger generation in general.

He's telling us to appreciate ourselves and love ourselves NOT be full of self loathing..

But ironically that is what he was like when he was younger..that's why he's very equiped to tell us this I think
Shut up already, damn.

heart

Finally, sense!

Creep in Prince's version sounds like a lame version of Purple Rain, which in itself is already a tired song.

Prince's choice of Radiohead songs just means he is as shallow as his music since the Rainbow Children.

Well, probably. I mean, how dare I? All Prince fans must like Purple Rain.

Sure, a tired song, as in; played too often. Not drab like Diamonds & Pearls or Nothing Compares 2 U, but tired. If Prince does not retire, as I think he should, mostly making the kind of mush he has the last decade, then just retire that one song.
Pretty please, Prince.

It's not 'tired' as you put it - you just don't like it - go on - admit it - I dare you?

And if you think Prince is mush why are you actually listening to him????

I love how fams who never heard of Radiohead before Prince played Creep are interpreting the song.

It has been a joy to read, since Coachella. Why oh why didn't Prince rape "The Amazing Sounds Of Orgy" instead of "Creep"?

I forgot, as I just heard Prince's version twice; were there any horns in it? He should have done a bold disco version, methinks. That's what he does these days. Disco. Bring Me The Disco Prince.

im not your love. neutral

but back to the discussion.

When you were here before,
Couldn't look you in the eye
You're just like an angel,
Your skin makes me cry

You float like a feather
In a beautiful world
I wish I was special
You're so very special

But I'm a creep,
I'm a weirdo
What the hell am I doin' here?
I don't belong here

I don't care if it hurts,
I wanna have control
I want a perfect body
I want a perfect soul

I want you to notice
when I'm not around
You're so very special
I wish I was special

But I'm a creep
I'm a weirdo
What the hell am I doin' here?
I don't belong here, ohhhh, ohhhh

She's running out the door
She's running out
She run run run run...
run...

Whatever makes you happy
Whatever you want
You're so very special
I wish I was special

But I'm a creep,
I'm a weirdo
What the hell am I doin' here?
I don't belong here

I don't belong here...

Now, he sings the "your so very special, i wish i was special, but im a creep, im a weirdo" part with irony...it's not the lyric per se but the tone that adds layers to the entire song....and the part IMHO makes the song....he isn't expressing his deeper fears...where the hell are you even getting that from?

why do you think the song closes with the following line: What the hell am I doin' here?

I don't belong here

I don't belong here...

the narrator likes the girl, doesnt want to admit it or deal with rejection so he uses the fact that he is a creep to accept the rejection.

Whhhhhaaaaattttt??

Are you actually talking about the song Creep hear???

It's not ironic at all.

It is actually about self-loathing...

Think about millions of teenage kids thinking they are too fat, too thin, not perfect enough.

It is not ironic.

You are missing the point if you think it is.

That is something rather greedy to pray for. I'd say that is abusing godly powers.

Prince should never have touched it in the first place.....disbelief

just like Orgy should never have touched New Order's Blue Monday.....

just like Marilyn Manson should never have touched Eurythmics' Sweet Dreams....

just like INXS should never have touched Joy Division's Love Will Tear Us Apart.....

just like the Simple Minds should never have touched Prince's Sign 'O The Times.....

just like Prince should never have touched Foo Fighters' Best Of You (and NOT U mad ).....

.....and so on!

Some songs are there not to be touched by others.
All the of them, except Prince, at least had the decency to respect the original lyrics.....

I'm totally with sosgemini & HamsterHuey.....so go & call me an old fart!

While I think he did ok by "Best of You," I appreciate the sentiment of this post. It's bad enough that you try to cover but then to futz with the lyrics like some teenager is unforgivable and shows a bit of tonedeafness on Prince's part for totally missing the point of the song.

This from the same guy who wouldnt let Elvis cover Pop Life. I dont get it.

Well, Well, Well, I have just managed to hear this or see it, although there was little to see, this is one of my top ten fav songs from the 90´s and is without doubt one of the best songs of the 90´s to boot.
I have often wondered what certain songs covered by Prince would sound like, but this was definately not one of them and after hearing it once, my opinion has not changed.
The guitar work was great as one would expect, just a pity that he did not have Thom Yorke doing the vocals or at least try one of his more darker vocal ranges.

On a positive note though, it is good to see that someone like Prince appraoching 50, has got a great taste in music cool
If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

There is one very interesting thing about this thread. One person hears one thing from one song and another person hears something completely different from the same song. I think that's what makes music so incredible, we all have our own ideas about what a song means to us.

As for the 2 different versions of "Creep", I dig them both. Radiohead's version is more raw, and Prince's is more mellow. I can listen to both and be satisfied.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

True!

Totally true. I love how people ATTACK other people for having another opinion. The Guantanamo Bay Fams.

Best is the name calling, of course; I adore the meagre attempts at snide remarks, but fams are total whack at it. It's what keeps me tied to this site; the total obnoxiousness of it all.
