PARADE Could Quite Possibly Be...

My favorite motherfuckin' Prince album of all time.

I swear to GAWD, in it's short 41 minutes or so, it rocks, it thumps, it croons, it gets psychedelic, and then it bitch slaps me with originality.

Like John Holmes or Chad Hunt's porn star penis, this album is one of a kind. There isn't anything out there on the market, before or since, by Prince, or anyone else for that matter, that puts all these elements together so seemlessly and in such a delightfully imperfect yet quirky manner.

I've heard critics call it a "near miss" of a gem, and I'm inclined to agree--but I think this is why I love the album so much.

It's truly Prince at the peak of his beetle-esque era. I would love to see him recapture some of that.

admit it, you just liked his bum in the kiss video and he doing splits in a zoot suit without ruining his hair razz
If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

Honestly when he does that rub-my-ass thing in that video, I can't help but wonder why he didn't eat more. I mean, he was rich by then.

I agree...

I seldom listen to this album, but when I do, I always get blown away at how original and daring it was.

Every track, even the odder ones that you may not listen to very often, is a real classic, somehow.

I've always wondered why it's considered some sort of crowning achievement...shrug

it's on a level with most of his 90's work to me...a few hits, a few uniques and a few misses...hell, it didn't even live up to its name...I thought it was gonna be a great social commentary through the eyes of Prince-judging by the title track...needless to say, starfish & coffee didn't strike me as a call for education reform in our public schools...

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

i love this album as a whole.

the way it weaves the story and so seamlessly mixes up the styles and some fab tunes that work as standalone singles. but i prefer to listen to the whole thing the way its meant to be and the ending is so sad.

For a long time i considered Sign of the Times his best album.

The eclectism, the mixture of styles, the balance between 'funsongs' and more deeper, psychological lyrics, the sprawling feel of an double album. All elements that make Sign of the Times such a rewarding album.

But lately i tend to think Parade is at least on par with 'Sign'. Its a very different album, often very playfull and whimsical, songs that sound like sketches, others that sounds too overproduced for their own good at first. But the 'magic' of that album is: somehow it works!
While an album like Purple Rain sounds like a 'winner' at first listenings, every song being catchy, energetic, right on spot it misses the kind of charm that Parade has. Parade might sound flawed and ambivalent at first listenings, but those are exactly the elements that also make it an album to be treasured and 'learnt from' 21 years since its release.
