it was late 2001/2002.girl 6 was on tv a whole lot for some reason.i'm a big spike lee fan and own most of his movies.so i picked up this one.i don't know why no one likes that movie.i think it's great.sure it isn't perfect.but there is so much to like about it.theresa randle is a great, underrated, underused actress who does her thing with this undevoloped role.and what spike lacks in storytelling he makes up with such a great look and style.very well shot.anyways, the more i watched it the more i noticed how cool the music in the film was.so i bought the soundtrack.unfortunately(or fortunately because of how it turned out)all the songs i liked in the movie weren't on the soundtrack.the beginning of my "journey" if you will was buying albums just to get those songs.cut to 5 or 6 years later.i have all his official releases(not to mention some unofficial ones, but i won't go there).the songs that did it for me were "adore" and "hot thing".to this day my two favorite songs.while girl 6 got me interested in him the album that really made me a fan was sign o the times.it is in my opinion the single finest, most well-rounded piece of work ever made(by him or anyone else, for that matter).i haven't had any fall-outs.there have been other people/albums that i've gotten into but none of them can mess with prince in my book.as far as his recent actions are concerned.i don't agree with the way he's gone about it("PFUnk" is the shit, though)but i guess it's his right.i can't fully back him as i myself have indulged in the very things he's against.it's the cool, complicated, imperfect yet loveable jerk he is on records and at shows that i love and relate to.not the controlling, delusional jerk he may be in real life that i will probably never meet let alone have to deal with.i can separate the two,so i'm cool with it all.
For all time I am with you, you are with me.

1. When and how did you become a Prince fan? What were the circumstances around it? I became a Prince fan back in 1983 when 1999 came out! My sister bought me the album as payment for babysitting my nephew!

2. What album or song did it for you? The album 1999 did it for me...after hearing Let's Pretend We're Married, I was hooked, so much so that I went to my local record store and started ordering his back albums, then from there went ordering groups that were associated with him.

3. If you fell out of "fan-dom" which album or phase did that occur in? I haven't fell out of 'fan-dom'! I feel I will forever be a Prince fan, I just can't walk away from his music, it's a part of me.

was home watching videos and the 1999 video came on.. didnt know who he was.. i noticed he had on eyeliner n heels and although he was cute, the song didnt grab me.. .. later that same day, im blasting the radio, and. ..this funk jam comes over the airwaves .. and it's groovin' dancing jig ..and im like 'eek who is this?' so i cant wait til the end to hear who it is.. and the DJ yells "My man Prince! with Lady Cab Driver!" and it hits me... 'that's the dude with the eyeliner n heels eek' .. that song made me a fan and my journey had begun..

1) 17 Days. I was 11 When that song came out. I remember recording it off the radio (back in the day when they played the full version) and played it to death every day. Then Purple Rain (the movie) was released. And the videos, When Doves Cry, Lets go crazy, Baby I'm a Star, Purple Rain. By the end of the year I was a borderline Prince/MJ fan.

2) Around the World in a Day/Lovesexy. I know, I know. The albums are several years a part but it was between that time that I started getting Prince's back catologue and realized I could really dig him.

3) Somewhere between the Crystal Ball nightmare (some of you know what I'm talking about) and this whole Chaos and Disorder rant he's own. No,PFunk was the frosting on my cake. Oh what the hell am I saying? brick I'll continue to buy his music. I just wont be digging him. Where's that man who used to sing, "if you're with mew, you never have to call me?"

I think Prince very well knows how to get folks riled over a song though.

His choice of songs at the superbowl proved this. He chose classics, and white "straight" male friendly songs, and rocked the shit out of his performance. It would be a completely effortless thing for him to translate that to record.

He just doesn't. lol

I think he's trying to get a hit record on his own terms "cutting against the grain, and doing something unexpected---remember a lot of folks thought Planet Earth would reflect the tone of the Superbowl performance." Instead, we got this strange , quirky, likable but forgettable album.

Well, Prince remains interesting, if not completely likable. lol

while I'll kinda agree with likable, I'll disagree with interesting...the Rainbow Children and NEWS were atleast interesting....PE, 3121, Musicology, not so much lol...they were just sort of phoned in...shrug

1. When and how did you become a Prince fan? What were the circumstances around it?

I was always a "casual fan", I remember hearing Prince songs on the radio growing up and generally liked them, but I never bought any albums. I did buy both the 7 and Gett Off singles in high school and then The Hits/B-Sides when it came out. But that was the extent of my Prince collection until...

after college, I moved to Chicago and the guy I started dating was a huge Prince fan. We started going to Prince night every month at Berlin. It was there that learned all the songs (as well as The Time, Vanity, etc), albeit in mixed up order (as opposed to chronological as they were released). It was almost like learning by osmosis.

2. What album or song did it for you?

17 Days. The DJ would play it regularly at Prince night and I loved it. I asked the boyfriend what song it was and he was like, "Dumbass you have that song--17 Days--it's on the b-sides." I had never listened to that disc. redface The rest is history.

3. If you fell out of "fan-dom" which album or phase did that occur in?

The Planet Earth/Websheriff phase.* neutral

* As we are currently in this phase, I'm hoping it will pass (like a phase). But right now I am not feelin' Prince the "business man" or the musician at all. I haven't listened to any Prince music other than PFUnk for at least a month (which is a long time for me).

Ooh! Ooh! Funt hread!

1. When and how did you become a Prince fan? What were the circumstances around t?

I became a Prince fan in three minutes. It was 1984, I was 13 and had previously heard Little Red Corvette and 1999, but they had just registered as something fun.

2. What album or song did it for you?

I heard When Doves Cry on the radio and in the course of those 3 minutes was turned into a fan. I begged my mom for the LP and then I was fan for life.

3. If you fell out of "fan-dom" which album or phase did that occur in?

I had loads of moment that made me go UHMMMM.... the letting go of The Revolution, even though that was quickly forgotten after SOTT, the Lovesexy cover, the slave thing.

What made me disconnect was The Rainbow Children. After the journey Prince went on to reconsile the demons and angels in his head he went wfor something so limiting I could not follow.

PS

What really made me disconnect finally were the )2 concert. What I saw was an artist that seemed bored and unispired. Where I previously decided that even though the albums were whack, his performances were at least still on fire.

The O2 concerts made me feel for him; rehashing old stuff not even his own. For the first time he bored me live.

Yup. No hard feelings here either. You can't always be on top. He is becoming what James Brown was; a shadow of his past self, playing the old hits without the fire and passion of old.

Occasionally, the old brilliance flares up when he is doing something he is particularly into. Like at the aftershow he attended, it was all rather lame jamming, until the horn section came up with something really hot and he got that fire again.

I loved the album singles I had heard on the radio...

I was allowed to stay up past my bedtime on weekends, and was watching tv. I was flipping through the channels and *bang* there Prince was on stage (on fiyah!) in his underware.

I think that show was called The Midnight Special. And I think the song was "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?", but I'm not sure that I remember it exactly.

By accident? haha...

sounds just like me.

But I call it by a different name wink

Check it out: for me, it was a drawn-out process of him popping up when I both didn't expect him or where my attention was at the time.
* that weekend afternoon, flipping thru the channels, PR on VH1...
* a couple of years later, I'm a fan of American Idol... he's at the finale
* I'm a football fan of 10 years... he's headlining the SuperBowl

People call them coincidences, and I'll probably get some skeptics with their eyes bugging out at me for saying this...

but personally, I call that "fate" cool
Prince is the first mainstream artist whose music I jumped into it in a LONG time. And his career/reputation is solid with all of this music he's written, and he's still doing what he does best cool

There's something I forgot to mention. My dad likes to tape music performances and play them on a rainy day or whatever. He really likes the 04 grammies and, oh my god, I have watched it dozens of times. Dozens.
So, I was hypnotized by that performance for 3 years.

1. Became a fan when I was 5 after hearing When Doves Cry. Didn't become die-hard till I was 12 when Diamonds and Pearls dropped.

2. I was 7 when my mom got me Parade, which was my first Prince album but when I heard the whole Purple Rain album a couple of years later, I knew I was always going to be a Prince fan.

3. I've not fallen out of "fan-dom" with Prince. I came close when I learned about the 1st wave of fansite closings in 1999 but I made a vow years earlier that no matter what great or stupid thing Prince did, I was still going to be a fan. I'm still here and "It's ain't Ova"! It's far from over.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I appreciate NEWS and the Rainbow Children for their deviation from usual form...I honestly expected Prince to continue in that direction at this point in his career...sort of experimental and non-conforming...both NEWS & TRC were released soon after changing his name back to Prince...I thought it was creatively courageous to produce that kinda music at that point...I wouldn't put either album on a short list of favorites but they do not bore me...since 2004, the music has bored me...I will not subscribe to the "Princes worst music is better than most artists classics" way of thinking...there was a time when that statement was true, but not anymore...
I'll always be a fan and I would like to be excited about new Prince music...with his last three offerings, he's made it tough...
