I appreciate NEWS and the Rainbow Children for their deviation from usual form...I honestly expected Prince to continue in that direction at this point in his career...sort of experimental and non-conforming...both NEWS & TRC were released soon after changing his name back to Prince...I thought it was creatively courageous to produce that kinda music at that point...I wouldn't put either album on a short list of favorites but they do not bore me...since 2004, the music has bored me...I will not subscribe to the "Princes worst music is better than most artists classics" way of thinking...there was a time when that statement was true, but not anymore...
I'll always be a fan and I would like to be excited about new Prince music...with his last three offerings, he's made it tough...

xpectation was another step in that vain and i hear what ur saying..even tho 3121 has been my favorite of the last 3, there still hasn't been a album i can sit all the way through and say well there is just one clunker ..planet earth was the album that i never dreamed i would loathe so much

you know, I don't even mind if I really don't like the music, I just want it to sound inspired and not phoned in...with all the talk in these forums about the sad state of modern music, I think it's an even sadder statement that a person with so much talent has been content serving up half assed r&b thats no better(and in some instances, alot worse) than anything else out there.....

true.. since everyone has the same beats ..and can't sing worth shit. umbrella? get the fuck outta here with that stale ass bullshit. and even tho i like alicia, that latest song doesn't set my soul on fire. so when u hear about cd sales diminshing etc, i have 2 laugh at when these execs blame it on digital music and piracy. naw ..it's ur artist and development departments that don't exist anymore
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Wow...great topic! biggrin

1.Watchin' Purple Rain it for me...I probably saw it the first time in the late 80s/early 90's. I'm 26 so I was only like 3 when Purple Rain first came out.

2."Do Me Baby","When Doves Cry" and " Beautiful Ones"...true classics!!!

3.I'm still a fan but I enjoy his older music best...

DoMeBaby69

In 1986 when I went to see Under The Cherry Moon at the cinema. I wasn't into Prince at that time to any extent but it seemed like a good film to see on a Sunday afternoon and from then I was hooked. But I already had tickets that year to see George Benson live and couldn't afford Prince as well so had to wait to see him live for the first time in 1988. So I suppose the Parade album was the first one which did it for me.

oh lord, Herman...prepare for the fam backlash over that last comment...lol

Ah, well, it is my own experience, of course. If people liked him doing Play That Funky Music White Boy than it says enough about them anyways.

Em.. he got someone from the audience up to sing that, during a audience participation thing! He stopped doing it quite quickly I think wink

I think he began to realise he didn't need any 'gimmicks' and the next show I attended on the 6th was totally inspired IMO
