Calling all Motorbabies!

If you're near a radio or can listen online I want you to tune into 105.9 fm Detroit and listen to the selections of songs!

They're over there jamming their asses off! But here's why I need you to listen...the songs that are being played are not your run of the mill Saturday R&B radio crap!!

I'm working and jamming and I'm thinking..."Damn, if I didn't know better I'd swear that was MOJO! YES! The Electrifying Mojo!

Then I'm like nah, "Wishful thinking girl!" Because the DJ never says a word, so I'm guessing it's just a long programmed playlist with the commercials and stuff set up, no need for a DJ.

Then I hear some Grace Jones shit I haven't heard in decades just nicely slip in after some hard Rick James and then out of nowhere comes Prince "Mountains"!

I'm like, "Alright now ONLY Mojo would play Prince's "Mountains"! So I call the station to ask...no one answers the phone. It just rings! Now, I'm sure it's Mojo!!! lol

He's throwing in lots of Prince...the GOOD shit and plenty of funk. Somebody listen please and tell me if you don't feel Mojo's presence! cool

Ok. Check it, and put it all together yall:

1. Last year, Mojo hung out with a bunch of us in the Holy River Radio (now Emancipation) chatroom and he told us that he's Program Director for a couple of radio stations here in Detroit, but he doesn't like to advertise which ones. My guesses have always been 92.3 and 105.9 ...

2. If you look at the DJ schedules page on the 105.9 website, there is no DJ listed from 7pm on. Perhaps Mojo is filling in this slot, and wants to avoid all the drama of "Being Mojo" so he's doing it anonymously.

wait, there's much more....

3. There is a site called "yes" which you can look up radio station logs, this is linked from the 105.9 site - you can look at everything the station played for the last week, what time it was played, etc. If you look at last saturday night, there are a lot of gaps in the log, where nothing is listed. Mojo is known for bringing his own record collection in, instead of using a station's in-house library. Whether this is coincidence, I'm not sure, but none of the Prince stuff he played is listed in this log, nor is "Screams of Passion" - Do you know how freaking rare a copy of that song is? That album walks right out the door! I have two copies of that album, Mojo must have at least one himself, eh?

4. A LOT of what I heard when I tuned in that night was OBVIOUSLY played from vinyl - it didn't sound raggedy but you could hear some vinyl noise, pops, etc. None of this was anything that isn't easily available on CD - Mojo always seemed to prefer Vinyl when he DJ'd.... Hmmmm....

5. Also, when you look at what songs were played in this log, it also lists the rating of the song for the station (i.e. ranked by most popular... if the song has the number 20, it is the 20th most popular song on the station. Everything the station has ever played has a number rating.... That night, "Moments In Love" by Art of Noise was played - Which Mojo used to play a lot.. and it's even listed in the log. This song has NO number rating listed, indicating it has NEVER been played on this station before... Hmmmm????

I'm not entirely convinced yet, and like SexyBeaut said, might all be wishful thinking, but it all seems to point toward it being Mojo. The only shitty thing about this is, if it IS him, he's not being allowed to do his thing - he's been fired from stations in the past - for playing so-called white music on black stations, and black music on white stations... last saturday's playlist seemed to adhere very close to 105.9's usual stuff.... at least what was logged...But even a half assed Mojo is better than none at all. Stay tuned...

What do yall think after reading this post??

I think you're great!! hug I just needed to know if I was seriously tripping because I had myself worried. whew

I'd forgotten about Mojo saying he's a Program Director. So it would be very easy for him to slip some things in.

Also, I saw TuneUp Man yesterday and I asked him point blank if Mojo was at 105.9 and stepping in on Saturday's, he just looked at me in total amazement but wouldn't confirm it nor deny it.

I'll be listening this Saturday and we'll see. If it is Mojo, he won't be able to resist dropping clues and Mojo-holics like me will know them when we hear them.

If he plays "THE SOUND" ... I'll die!

How many of yall remember this? WAAY back in the WJLB days, during the last song played by whatever DJ would come on before Mojo, you'd hear a Sound. Very distinctive, like the Mothership was ABOUT to land - not the actual landing itself.

Maybe I'm giving away the game, but here are some songs that I remember ONLY Mojo would play...

A Rainstorm, followed by both versions of "God".
"Temporary Love" by Vinx
"Behind the Wall" by Tracy Chapman
"Numbers" by Kraftwerk
A Live version of "How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore" that begins with a snatch from "Moonbeam Levels"
Just about any Prince 12", really
Stairway to Heaven ----- ON AN "R & B" STATION. This is how I immediately knew he was on WMXD back in the day. He was on WTWR, which was hard to get in some nights, then one night, he wasn't. I was flipping through the dial, and heard the beginning of Stairway to Heaven. WMXD, of course, is a Soul station. I instantly knew, and I was right! lol

For those of you who tuned in from 1988 (when he was on WTWR,) to 1989:
WHAT WAS THAT WEIRD ASS SONG he used to play? Girl, stoned sounding, talking about busting her man creepin... one line was "I followed you ..... In my BLUE CAR....." ... the second half of the song is the guy responding. one of his lines was "You wouldn't have Fucked Up in the first place...." This song beared NO resemblence to "The Rain" by Oran Juice Jones, before anyone even suggests... No idea but it's bugged me for years...

See yall this Saturday night....
Keep your headphones on.

It's Saturday! woot!

Motorbabies, don't forget to listen to or log on to 105.9 tonight. I've got an event to video tape this afternoon that could run long, so I may be a little late logging in here to discuss but by any means necessary, know that I'll be listening for signs of Mojo. Please feel free to start the discussion without me. If it is Mojo, this could be fun! cool

Oh hell yes! Mojo had(hoping seriously that should be HAS) his signature songs! Remember "Mesopotamia" by The B52's?

Man, no matter where I was or what I was doing, when I'd hear that song coming from a passing car, some guy's Boom Box as he walked down the next block, a neighbor's stereo, I knew INSTANTLY they were listening to Mojo and it was time to get home or at least to the nearest radio and listen too!! touched

Can't wait - I haven't been excited about listening to the radio in SO long...

If you look at http://yes.com/station/WDMK it lists all the songs played ... this teena marie song is the 25th most popular song on the station. Meanwhile, Purple Rain has NO RATING, indicating it has never been played on this station before... Mojo, are you here???

SahajaLove (7:46:51 PM): I'm definitely not feeling mojo in what I'm hearing right now
djdetroitbutcher (7:46:58 PM): like i said tho, it's still early
djdetroitbutcher (7:47:27 PM): if it is him, i wonder how long it is going to take before he starts going outside of the station's format??
SahajaLove (7:48:15 PM): that's just it, I think he'd already bet outside it, don't you?
djdetroitbutcher (7:48:47 PM): not exactly, no... don't want to blow it too quickly you know ... and how long would he actually last here, if he immediately started flippin the finger to the boss's, so to speak
SahajaLove (7:49:25 PM): very true
