Listen to 105.9 tonight they were playing some songs that i haven't heard in a long time.
But imo i don't think that was mojo. Songs that were played mostly late 80's and early90's r&b.
If Kreftwerk,ol'school rap,alt R&B, was not played at all. then it wasn't Mojo sorry Detroit.

Yes, tonight's sets were HEAVY on that era - But Kraftwerk WAS played, twice. Anyone who was expecting Mojo's usual smorgasbord of genres is bound to be disappointed. In today's corporate radio, Mojo cannot be "himself" - he would have to stick closely to the station's style - what happened tonight was a lot of the same flavor as this station is known for ... except the cuts and selections were often deeper, and more obscure - it was classic Detroit radio at it's best. Stay tuned next Saturday night for another exciting episode of "IS IT YOU, MOJO?"

I know I will - and once again, welcome back old friend!

If last night was the first time I listened. I probably wouldn't have thought that was Mojo either. But since I've been listening for the last few weeks, last night only added to my speculation that it is.

The one thing that's for sure is, it'll come out sooner or later and one way or another. In the meantime, I'm going to take smokeverbs advice and stay tuned!

I rarely listen to the radio at night, and my kids are usually all over the computer, so I hardly am on it, but I will definitely be listening to my daughter's boom box next Saturday.

I was a member of the Midnight Funk Association, though Mojo never sent me my Tshirt.

If he plays Gary Numan's "Cars" or Stereo MCs "I Wanna Go Higher," then it is most definitely Mojo. Those were two of his staples when he was on WTWR in 1989 or 1990.

Speaking of cars! I heard "Cosmic Cars" by Cybotron, the Saturday before last. Just a snippet mind you but I heard it! Definitely a Mojo staple!

Ok folks. I used to have Mojo's email address, but it bounces now, so he must have a new one somewhere. Since I couldn't send this to him last night, I'll post it here, maybe he'll see it.

My Detroit Friends in this thread, I gotta say I've loved hanging out in this thread with yall. Maybe this thread, no matter how it gets buried under new threads on the front page, can be a little home for us...

Dear Mojo, Mr. Johnson,

It has been nearly 20 years and I doubt you would remember me well, but I interviewed you for my High School Newspaper (Finney in Detroit) back in 1989, when you returned from WTWR to join WMXD. A mutual friend gave me your address, and I hope you are not offended that I'm writing you out of the blue.

A Lot of folks here are convinced you are DJ'ing undercover on the 7pm to Midnight slot, Saturdays on 105.9 ... This thread at prince.org shows tonight's excitement as we all tuned in. Please take a look!

http://prince.org/msg/7/240341

I would just like to say - If you are back on Detroit's airwaves, as a lot of us think you might be, Welcome Home. You've been very missed, and even if you can't deviate too much from the station's format - it doesn't matter, you ARE Detroit's DJ. You educated us all - I've been listening since 1984. Everyone understands that in Today's Corporate Radio climate, you may not be permitted to be your usual "no genre is safe" self.

If the Saturday night DJ on 105.9 is not you - I just thought it might bring a smile to your face that everyone is thinking of you. I still have my copy of The Mental Machine book that you sent me, autographed, back in 1995. You said "Watch The Skies" among other things in your inscription. I have been ever since.

Cheers, and God Bless,
Anthony Tittle

See yall next Saturday!

oh. p.s. to everyone reading this... I'm trying to track down a copy of that interview - it was quite long - and If I do, I'll post it for yall, it was a hell of a piece!

touched That was beautiful! touched

Don't worry, I'll be sure to bump this thread every Saturday so we can all witness the return of Mojo together!

I had mad fun last night! It has to be Mojo because I haven't had that much fun listening to the radio, since the last time I heard Mojo on the radio!

I swear, right here and now, if it turns out to be 105.9, just trying to capitalize on the Mojo phenomenon and playing with my emotions...I'll be outside their studio picketing their trifling behinds so loudly, they'll go find Mojo and give him whatever it takes, to get him to go back on air and to shut me the hell up!!

YES!!!!! I drove all over the city today. I visited people I haven't thought about in YEARS, just to see if they've been listening to 105.9 lately. I told them to tune in and see if they noticed anything familiar.

I didn't tell them I think it's Mojo because I could be wrong, highly unlikely but still. Also, if it is Mojo, I'm not sure he wants people flooding the radio station with "Welcome Back!" calls just yet. I just kinda dropped hints that they really, really should listen this Saturday.

Yeah, Detroit really did feel more like Detroit today. Our Mojo's back! cool

WTWR used to be broadcast from Monroe, MI, where I live, so I had no problem getting it in. That station used to suck during the day, but everyone tuned in when Mojo was on.

In 1989, my boyfriend at the time told me on the way to school one day, that the night before, him and his friend called in to Tower 98 and won some concert tickets for Bobby Brown, I think. Anyway, he told me that he had to go to the station that night to pick them up, and he said that Mojo came to the station door, with two "bodyguard" type of guys on either side of him to give him the tickets.

I often wondered if he was lying about it because I had never heard of Mojo actually doing things like that on the radio. Of course when I was 16/17, I was stupid and didn't think to ask my boyfriend to show me the tickets.

Ok. Check it, and put it all together yall:

1. Last year, Mojo hung out with a bunch of us in the Holy River Radio (now Emancipation) chatroom and he told us that he's Program Director for a couple of radio stations here in Detroit, but he doesn't like to advertise which ones. My guesses have always been 92.3 and 105.9 ...

2. If you look at the DJ schedules page on the 105.9 website, there is no DJ listed from 7pm on. Perhaps Mojo is filling in this slot, and wants to avoid all the drama of "Being Mojo" so he's doing it anonymously.

wait, there's much more....

3. There is a site called "yes" which you can look up radio station logs, this is linked from the 105.9 site - you can look at everything the station played for the last week, what time it was played, etc. If you look at last saturday night, there are a lot of gaps in the log, where nothing is listed. Mojo is known for bringing his own record collection in, instead of using a station's in-house library. Whether this is coincidence, I'm not sure, but none of the Prince stuff he played is listed in this log, nor is "Screams of Passion" - Do you know how freaking rare a copy of that song is? That album walks right out the door! I have two copies of that album, Mojo must have at least one himself, eh?

4. A LOT of what I heard when I tuned in that night was OBVIOUSLY played from vinyl - it didn't sound raggedy but you could hear some vinyl noise, pops, etc. None of this was anything that isn't easily available on CD - Mojo always seemed to prefer Vinyl when he DJ'd.... Hmmmm....

5. Also, when you look at what songs were played in this log, it also lists the rating of the song for the station (i.e. ranked by most popular... if the song has the number 20, it is the 20th most popular song on the station. Everything the station has ever played has a number rating.... That night, "Moments In Love" by Art of Noise was played - Which Mojo used to play a lot.. and it's even listed in the log. This song has NO number rating listed, indicating it has NEVER been played on this station before... Hmmmm????

I'm not entirely convinced yet, and like SexyBeaut said, might all be wishful thinking, but it all seems to point toward it being Mojo. The only shitty thing about this is, if it IS him, he's not being allowed to do his thing - he's been fired from stations in the past - for playing so-called white music on black stations, and black music on white stations... last saturday's playlist seemed to adhere very close to 105.9's usual stuff.... at least what was logged...But even a half assed Mojo is better than none at all. Stay tuned...

What do yall think after reading this post??

Indeed. He used to begin his shows with "In The Air Tonight" Coinciding with the landing of the Mothership. I wish I still had some tapes of those days.

I remember:

Mojo had been gone for a couple of years, after leaving WHYT in early '87. Couple years later I'm scanning my FM dial... looking for... anything.... Halfway coming in one night I pick up someone playing the 12" version of U Got The Look, I'm like hell yeah. Managed to get the station coming in decent, then they played the long version of Wild Wild West, by Escape Club, and then Hendrix's All Along The Watchtower. And then I heard that unmistakable sound, and then that VOICE. I about fell out of my chair, if I'd been sitting in one.

I laughed my ass off when, the night he returned to Detroit, at WMXD, I was listening (see above where this SOUL station played Stairway To Heaven (Zeppelin) ... And Mojo said:

This is the Electrifying Mojo and you're jammin to W-T ..... W-M-X-D... DETROIT.

He literally had just broadcasted the night before from WTWR..! Hilarious.

I know! I used to tape his shows constantly. What did I ever do with those tapes? I had one that was priceless to me: It was my best friend's 17th birthday. At the time, "17 Days" was OUR JAM. So I called Mojo on her birthday to have him wish her Happy Birthday on the air. He asked me what song to play for her, and I told him to play anything by Prince. I started taping, and he says, "Happy Birthday, Erika...17 Days..." and starts playing "17 Days."

Ahhh...I really loved Mojo.

It's Saturday!! woot!

Now 105.9 has been jamming since yesterday. They're playing some serious ol' school jams. They're hyping it as the Detroit Takeover. They've got Gary Chandler and Waxtaxson (sp?) Dre on the wheels of steel. It's been really nice but if my hunch is right and that's been Mojo doing Saturday nights, he's going to show them how it's done tonight!
