I've never wanted that perfume

Well I'm digging "Guitar" right now...

I'm not sure if anyone has thought of this but we all know how Prince likes to be very sneaky and sexual in his lyrics. Even today with his Jehova influences, he still manages to be quite sexual although not as blatent as he once was.

We all know what "Tambourine" was about. It was very subtle but upon listening you knew what it was. The kind of music that you can play to anyone and they wouldn't even suspect the true meaning.

Well---my theory is about "Guitar". Give the lyrics a listen---"I love U baby...but not like I love my Guitar".....hmmmmm....do you understand what I am getting at? What do you think his "Guitar" could actually be---you saw the SuperBowl performance with the sillouette behind the sheet-- Am I the only one that thinks this song could really be about HIS guitar!?!

planet earth's title track is good. i think i said somewhere else that it's "epic fun on high." i think he's trying to take the political influence music had in the 60's-70's and set it loose on todays world. as well as being political it touches base with some ethical stuff in those lyrics, all positive, nothing that preachy, good fun, and still a powerful ballad. it's a really solid track and a great piece of music. the only thing i'd ask for is more guitar (it has a great/moving solo at the end, but maybe it would sound greater if he carried it out longer). i give it an A

My Take On "When Doves Cry"

Greetings All I was listening to "When Doves Cry" today for about the 500,000,000,000,000,000,000 time in my life and for some reason the following explination of the song hit my in the face lie a ton of bricks....so I thought I would share my thoughts with you.....I believe this is a song about a relationship that once was good but when sour and this is Prince's plea to his loved one of the time in the middle of their "I Don't Wanna Be With You" argument.....and I will explain that to you now

I feel these two verses are his way of saying remember when we use to be in love like this.....the pasion was hot even the animals and all of nature enveyed them.....and then asking can you remember or in Princes words Can you picture this?

The Chorus of course is his plea....how can you leave me.....how can you walk out and leave me here alone.....and then he basically says is it because I demand too much of you and this relationship.....or is it just because no matter what I am never satisfied (I think has sexual "tones" to it....and if so are we ever truly "satisfied" or do we just want more ....and lets be honest everyone in a relationship has told their partner a time or two you are just like your mom....or you are just like your dad.....Prince then goes on and says why do we have to fight and argue....and since a dove is usually used to symbolize peace and love.....he uses that to get his imagery across.....when we argue it sound like doves crying.....the love and peace have been disturbed.....

This verse is his way of saying he is scared she is leaving.....the butterflies in his stomach and such....anyone who has ever been nervous knows exactly what he is feeling here.....and then he says Please don't make me have to chase after you because I still want my pride.....

Okay, I decided to analyze Cinnamon Girl. The song is mainly about 21-st century stereotypes and how they can mentally damage those it targets and turn them to act in revenge. By pushing them away, we are essentially making them outcasts, leading them to choose to retaliate against those who push them away.

And now, to give my take on the lyrics. This will include exertps to make it a bit easier to follow. When reading the lyrics closely, we see that prince makes several references to ancient cultures/literature, etc.

1: Babylon, the capital of Babylonia, an ancient empire of Mesopotamia, was a city on the Euphrates River, in what is now southern Iraq. Babylonian literature was well developed, and records have been found of highly developed religion, history and science. Medicine, chemistry, alchemy, botany, zoology, math and astronomy were practiced. This religion and the cuneiform writing were derived from the older culture of Sumer.

2: That day is a reference to 9/11/01.

Cinnamon Girl of mixed heritage
Never knew the meaning of color lines
911 turned that all around
When she got accused of this crime --- (3)

So began the mass illusion, war on terror alibi (4)
What's the use when the god of confusion keeps on telling the same lie? (5)

3: This a reference to the post-9/11 mindset. Before 9/11, those of Middle Eastern or South Asian descent were well accepted and their children born in the U.S. were well integrated into society. However, after 9/11, they aren't seen the same way. Any one with a sari, a turban, or a hajab is always looked at suspiciously. Many Muslim men have been arrested for no reason what so ever.

4: Reference to Bush's actions after 9/11. The term "war on terror" was created, and it was used as an excuse for invasions, sending out mass numbers of troops etc. "Mass illuion" can also refer to the media coverage during that time.

5: There is a possibility of 2 answers for this line. One is that it could be a reference to Seth, the god of confusion, represents chaos and disorder, the constant and eternal challenge to order of creation. Or it could be a reference to Bush who has constantly used the same lie of the "war on terror" to justify his actions of "fighting the terrorists" "stopping the enemy before they stop us", etc.

6: When we hear Prince sing this line, its almost a plea to the "girl" to think about what she's doing. It can also be somewhat of an apology for the actions of society.

7: Here, prince speaks of the futility of war and why we're really fighting. Fighting only leads to deaths on both sides, many innocent and few guilty.

In conclusion, I chose to analyse the song Cinnamon Girl because being of South Asian descent, I can relate to the meaning of the lyrics. Prince expertly ties in references to modern politics with those of ancient times to create a beautiful song about stereotyping those we don't understand, questioning why we are really fighting the war, and if its all worth it. By killing the innocent civilians of countries we're invading, we are only giving those who are "terrorists" reason to fight back in any way they can. Granted, we should deal with the people who were responsible for actions of terrorism, but is what we're doing now the right way to do so? Such a beautiful song with alot of depth behind it makes it more important to listen to it carefully. Prince does a wonderful job with this song, and I'm sure many of South Asian descent like myself can somehow relate to the song like I did when I fist heard it.

It may not be perfect, but its been awhile since I analyzed something to this extent, so forgive me if there are any spelling errors, reference erors, etc. I also want to say that this is just an opinion of mine. One of the great things about music is that one song can have different meanings for different people, and it touches us differently.
