I would say Susanah hands down with these 2 classics that were inspired by her.

Add

Nothing Compares 2 U

The Beautiful Ones

Condition Of The Heart

and the unheard 'Wally' amongst others to that list and there is no competition.

How 2 split the org into two distinct camps in just one thread - it's never been done so cleanly b4 (except for the one or two Susan M's and Vanity's plus Vainandy and Imago, who were always in their own camp...)

I'm in the susannah camp - altho it's hard to go past the inspiration for Erotic City (and did she alsoinspire LPWM?)
"We've never been able to pull off a funk number"

"That's becuase we're soulless auttomatons"

Ummm no.

DanceMusicSexRomance: Prince the First Decade, by Per Nilsen

page 135, paragraph 3

"When Doves Cry" was inspired by Susan Moonsie, who remained one of Prince's closest friends. [...] "He had seen a lot of people but Susan was always kind of his number one. She was always around."

Susannah.

Why do people think that Susannah inspired Beautiful Ones? Is this a known fact? I wasn't aware that he was with her when that song was written. The sentiment of that song seems more like a lament of the end of his relationship with Vanity than the beginning of one with Susannah. Just an observation from afar.

It's a toss up between Vanity and Susannah to me. The Vanity-inspired music was funky and freaky. The Susannah inspired music romantic and beautiful. So it depends on my mood. A lot of other lovers inspired some great music too. I have to give props to Robin Powers for Gett Off and Insatiable. Also props to Susan Moonsie for Private Joy. I wasn't feeling the Mayte inspired music - it was a little too sappy for me. Although, I do like The One and One Kiss a Time. Let's Have a Baby is BEAUTIFUL, but so sad to me now. Ironically, the Mayte breakup inspired some nice ones too - The Greatest Romance..., I Love You but... and Man O War. Mani did her part with Call My Name. Patrice Rushen wasn't a lover but she inspired I Feel For You and I Wanna B Your Lover. I am sure there are countless others who inspired some of my other favorites. Anyone know the inspiration for When You Were Mine? So, they have all inspired some great Prince music in their own ways.

The story on "The Beautiful Ones" goes something like P was just introduced to Susannah by Wendy, and was so taken with the fact that there was a "more feminine/non-lesbian version of Wendy, that he fell in love with her right then and there. Trouble was, Susannah had a man at the time and Prince, being the gentleman he is, gave her the ultimatum of "him or me", hence the end portion of the song. I might have missed couple points, but I think that's the gist of it.
