He should do much better in the US charts...debut at #1! "Just like the sun, the Rainbow Children rise."

your right - it'll do better in US - the commercial SHITE they pump out over here is CRIMINAL - and the money merchants to blame for such shite as Journey South, Girls Aloud - need locking away for a very long time. totally pisses me off... Not as high as I was expecting to be honest. After all, Musicology reached #3 and 3121 is much better, but perhaps it hasn't had as much advertising as Musicology did? U been bamboozled, hoodwinked, took.

I think the reason this has happened is because its Mothers Day and all the more commercial shite - er I mean music has been selling - for example Journey South - a big hit for the Mums eh?? maybe he should have waited a while or released it earlier 'Ive never been 1 2 hide my feelings, Baby, u blow my mind I painted your face upon my ceiling, I stare at it all the time...' http://www.myspace.com/welshmess

I'm really surprised it isn't higher. I expected #3 or #4. Anybody have the full chart rundown? Sales figures?
Maybe it will move up the chart once Black Sweat is shown on TOTP and is released as a single proper...

that is a joke... | |

that is a travesty, but then, shame on universal and prince for not promoting this to the max.
This is why i dont understand prince, he releases a new album and then disappears, he's done close to no promotion for this album except the brits and snl. This deserved a top 3 placement, but unfortunately, i fear it will disappear from the charts next week with even less sales than musicology!

Hear hear. I can't believe that some so called artists just make music that people want to hear and then the record companies put this in the shops just to make money. If I had a record deal there's no way I'd want anyone to buy it - I've way too much integrity for that.

Well I kinda agree - I have been at work all day so watched TOTP to get the album charts and fully expected No.3 or 4 and kinda gutted it was no.9 !
I too felt absolutely ashamed that Journey South were No.1 - it is possibly my age but I still value the charts even though they no longer seem to have the relevance that they had during my youth , I take it as an insult to our society when a track like the godawful Chico gets to no.1 in the singles charts and today as Prince wasn`t no.1 , I felt the same sense of loathing for Journey South who are basically crap Karaoke singers who have had massive exposure through the X Factor. However I was clearly wrong , their performance tonight on TOTP of Roberta Flacks classic song "The First time Ever I saw Your Face" was astonishing , this is one of my favourite songs and one of those like Stevie`s "Lately" , or Chaka`s "I`m Every Woman" - songs which are so good , so timeless that only the original singer can do it justice. Be honest , how many times have you heard someone cover these songs and been satisfied ? Me too , until tonight. As much as I love 3121 and consider it to be an absolutely classic Prince album and his best in years for me those Geordie Boys ,(whose names elude me , but they will be household names in the next decade or two such is their talent and obvious staying power !) , they have deservedly pipped him to the post - their rendition of Killing Me ... was incredible , it re-wrote and raised the bar for Soul Music. It was performed live (well they both had pulses !) , if that is an indication of the vocal ability and sheer talent of the duo then their album is a worthy winner of the battle for No.1 and Prince should take heed and work hard at trying to match the gauntlet that has been thrown down by the wonderfully multi talented Journey South. ***IF YOU TELL ME TO WALK A STRAIGHT LINE***

Alas, I wouldn't lay blame for your newfound appreciation of the mighty 'South on your guinea pigging. Apparently when those guys heads swelled up to three times their nornmal size last week, they also turned completely purple.

Yeah sarcasm aside , how absolutely f***ing risible were Journey South on TOTP , the credibilty of a nation rests on that - who the heck buys such stuff ! but to be honest, im now startin to think it doesnt deserve no 1 , not simply that the music is bad, coz its not, but he simply hasnt done any work to promote it. Either prince is sittin at home sayin i dont want to be no 1, i dont want to promote, or he's sittin at home sayin "meh, ive done enuf promo for this". To be honest , i dont know which would be worse.

Isn't 'Black Sweat' out tomorrow? A bit of airplay and a chart position for the single and maybe 3121 will climb, But I have to say #9 is disappointing.

Before everyone gets their knickers in a twist may I just point out two things: 1. If it was released in the UK last Tuesday then it didn't get a full week's worth of sales to count towards its chart position so comparisons are not wholly fair. 2. The album is great and what matters is that people hear it and appreciate it not a chart position. Sign of the Times hardly set the world alight when it came out in the UK but it has endured as a classic. ..that's the best thing that can happen to an album....not its chart position.

i have to say, i dont really understand what has happened to Prince in the Uk he has ignored it for too long and his support here amongst the general public and the music industry has drained.
3121 will not be a success here unless he pulls out all the stops, and to be honest i think he has to do this, the Uk is one of his biggest markets!

3121 will not be a success here unless he pulls out all the stops, and to be honest i think he has to do this, the Uk is one of his biggest markets! was. up to 1992. Break it down. The ONA tour was small venues only and a handful of gigs only. He's not registered significantly or sold chartwise since the early 90's in the UK. I thought the Brit performance might have helped, but apparently not. he needs to get it sorted, TV appearances, gigs or whatever. He's respected, but that doesn't equal sales, and that is what he is going for with this commercial sounding album, right? Universal and Prince are both at fault, proper singles with more than one track are the order of the day, preferably before the album release. too late now though. He'll be lucky to be top 20 next week. damn shame cause 3121 is a pretty decent pop album.

He isn't. they showed 2/3rds of the Black Sweat video. I'm hoping he can debut #1 in the States, seeing as it's been awhile. our charts in the UK are complete shite.

That's funny you mentioned that. He's like the bizarro version of the band Queen (Prince/Queen see the royal connection). They ignored the US after 82 (i.e. no North American tours, not much single promotions) and it definitely hurt their US sales for that time period. I guess non spectacular music aided too, which may also be the case with Prince. ----- okay I better sum it up: A combination of ignoring a public and then when you drop something, not having it being the best thing since quilted toilet paper proibably equals in shit sales. (hey shit sales/quilted toilet paper. See the connection? Didn't even plan that one)

Prince never debut number 1 on the US charts has he? I mean albums didn't start debuting at number 1 until the mid to late 90's, unless my memory is flawed.
