"The Word" In the Top 5 All Time

After several listens I think its in the top 5 of Prince songs.

Might be heavy of the religious tip, but really the song is deep because eff the reason he wrote it. Anyone can interpret their own way and the song is contempory and damn good.

This is Prince's 1st great work that fits the times since P rain.

It's certainly high on my list but top 5 is just too damn difficult to say with all the awesome songs he's already written, there r just 2 many! Just from the top of my head;

Do Me Baby,
Crucial
If I was your Girlfriend,
The Beautiful Ones
Lady Cab Driver
Open Book
Lady Cab Driver
Good Love
Power Fantastic
Sometimes it Snows in April
Last December

See, I'm already in big trouble - how the hell am I supposed to choose only 5 from these beauties? Impossible! However, having said that, The Word is my favourite track of 3121. The religious msg doesn't bother me at all this time, not in this song.

Let me clarify.

As far as songs that are great for the time, I think this one is in the top 5.

However, as far as Prince's collection and the ones that have no time, I would say in the top 20.

As much as I dig electronics.. I like when he uses them.. I just think the sound that floats in this song is something i've heard from him before, I think its the drum programming.... very npgmc 2001 to me.. but hey, I like the song overall...

This is the best production on any song on 3121.. I will say that

It´s for sure a GREAT song , it´s fantastic and catchy and has a very uplifting vibe, very much like Everywhere and some of those uplifting songs off of Diamonds and Pearls, and I love that.

Still, it´s difficult to say it´s in the top five...that´s subjective. As good as it is, I think the chorus sounds a bit weird, the way he sings " ...wicked ooones " and safeguard against funky talk etc. , but other than that, it´s another proof that Prince can still write amazing songs anytime he wants to.

Even though I don´t necessarily agree with a lot of the religious imagery used in his music ( I don´t have a Christian/Biblical background ) I can still relate to the positive message conveyed in songs like the ones I mentioned. 7 is one of my all time favorites.

KoolEaze - I agree with what you're saying.

BTW - it's 'forked tongue' even though the second syllable of 'fork-ed' is enunciated ... and it can sound similar to the way he might use 'funky'.

You are ( as usual, as I might point out) right, it´s forked tongue...see, up to now I had listened to the album in my kitchen, and after my post I have listened to it onheadphones plus I´ve got the real deal with the booklet now.

Thanks...I hate it when I make mistakes like that. neutral

Then again, a lot of native speakers have come up with far more "individual" interpretations of lyrics over the years, so I guess I didn´t sound like a complete idiot. lol

I seriously don't understand how/why this song is getting this much love. I really like the track but it is by far not even close to my favorite. I'm shocked so many people think this is the best track. Although I do love the chorus about the spiders and all that nod
