I'm not saying that Prince didn't mean it as a JW message. I'm sure that it is.

What I'm saying is that it simply doesn't matter, since the lyrics are vague enough so that they can be applied to any religious belief.
The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

I don't know how in the blazes my statement got in between Banana Cologne's truth but I had to take it out so it read..."as I said it" (pardon me, bananapeel" lol just kidding.. (wink).

It is truly sad when opinions become more energy than they deserve to be conceptualized; however, on the point, please read the following:

Pertaining to 3121 via Prince Rogers Nelson, no matter what type of song he does, he always puts his music out into the world with his heart on a plate. Respectfully speaking, people need to truly touch an instrument and know that it is not just the instrument playing (even being recorded) that really makes that song come through in the music but that the energy the person is feeling deep down into their bones and spirit that allows us to contemplate and arise out of a slumber of daily life to feel something good or bad about it that awakens our senses even for a split second to realise that potentially for that fracture and fragment within that moment there is a shot of energy running through your veins and mind to your spirit to make that opinion good or bad. With that being said, Prince Rogers Nelson has within this cd compiled songs that are being shared to simply "awaken your senses" out of what might be a better day for you to simply enjoy what he is sharing. I wish the best for 3121 and all of the musical companions he shares this venture with (including whom may be reading this now)... aka all of you.

I totally agree. Good read.

Due to the harsh groove and bizarre FX used in the song "3121" it has earned my satisfaction as One of My Favorite Prince Songs.

Ok, so I was lucky enough to have a friend of mine drop a copy 3121 in my mailbox last night and I have listened all day and I'm sure will continue to form an opinion in the coming weeks. I've read many postive and negative reviews on it and now I can give one of my own...

I have listened to Prince since 1980 and have been a fan all along...I don't love everything he's ever done but I respect it all. I own pretty much everything he has ever released and have been sneaky enough to get a lot more that hasn't been....anyway...

my take on the 3121 is that is really cool as an entire album. I think it's his most hip album of late. Yes, i know there are some 80's keyboards but all together I think it's a really good pop record. 3121 the song is a killer opening track that shows Prine hasn't changed but has been able to borrow some really cool modern production techniques.

I will only mention two others that I think really stuck out after the first listen...Love and The Word. All in all, a very cool album with more of shot at radio play than I think he's had in years...but who cares anyway. I know he doesn't. I put it up there with Around the world in day and SOTT.

The following is a review of the actual cd, not a stream, though there seems to be no difference.

3121
- A mid-tempo grinder that stays mid-tempo. Prince talks his way through most of this one as opposed to actually singing, and there's no real melody. There's a four-bar guitar solo that goes nowhere. Considering the presence of 4 horn players, one might expect a brass feast. But they just do a brief fill-in, and are buried behind a synth for some reason. The repeated phrase "3121/don't U wanna come?" does start to stick to the synapses.
The album needed a better opener...mediocre.

Lolita- This one's got a staccato rythym that'll make you want to move, propelled by multi-layered synths. Prince's starts off singing, though the melody never really catches fire, and by the end, he's speaking again, not singing.
A fun groove, but ultimately a just-miss.

Te Amo Corazon- We all know it, but what grabs you in context of the cd is how organic sounding it is, and hey, Prince is Singing!
I"ve always liked this one, and it works well here.

Black Sweat- Okay, the groove's a hip mover, but the man takes self-cannibalization to a new level. The falsetto thing over a drum machine, the bridge that doesn't quite fit, and "I've got a brand new dance?" We heard that in 1991 with "Horny Pony" After several spins, it occurs to me it's basically a funkier rewrite of "Rave in2 the joy fantastic" As on Lolita, prince speaks the bridge, doesn't sing it. Sad to say, no real melody...again.
We're not off to a great start.

Incense & Candles- Full disclosure...I don't care for much modern day R&B (Old School here!). That said, this is modern day R&B. It sounds fine for what it is, but it's not my thing.

Love- Okay, here we go. This one grabs you at the :18 mark with a killer beat, funky guitars, and nasty synths. A sugary-sweet chorus bumps up against the grinding verses. At about 2:25, it stops dead for four bars while Prince speaks again, and the beat dies off. Then, at 4:20(!), Prince says "Let's skate", and things really get nasty.
The best, and certainly most lively, track so far.

Satisfied- I either love Prince's ballads (Adore, Call My name, Damn U) or skip right past them (Insatiable, The Arms of Orion). This one I love. It's got great old-school soul flavor.
The whole thing builds to a near blues ecstasy of sexual longing at around 1:45, then sweetly draws to a close.
There'll be no skipping here.

Fury- This would have been a 10 if the guitar would simply have been turned up prominently in the mix. For reasons I'll never understand, it wasn't, robbing the song of much needed power.
Because of the low-mixed guitar, another just-miss.

The Word- The acoustic guitar grabs you at :12. It's propelled by guitar strumming and a punchy sax (Does Prince play sax now? He's credited with all instruments here.) A really nice-sounding chorus. It's the album's only religous tune..."Don't U wanna Go get saved?" is the songs last line.
There's a nice little fuzzed out electric guitar solo near the end.
This song perfectly demonstrates how great production can take a simple idea and turn it into a gem.
Perhaps the most complete song on the album so far, other than TAC.

Beautiful, Loved & Blessed- For those who haven't heard, it's a sweet, catchy R&B ballad with really nice co-lead vox by Tamar. I love her "Hey,hey, hey's" at 3:05. There's some nice fuzzed-up guitar at 4:10. At the end, the song turns into a funky little jam.
3121 is now on a decided roll.

The Dance- Less grand, & slightly less melodic than the original. It begins ominously. The synths play off each other to create an undercurrent of tension and melancholy. At around 2:30, it flirts with a Latin sound courtesy of a piano solo and a rythym change.
NOW- much has been made of the screaming at the end, but that only follows a great trademark Prince rant that features all we have come to love about Prince...confidence, boasting, vulnerabilty and a virtually tangible sense of sexual longing. "Baby, how U just gonna really stand there/and act like U don't want this" he snarls, over hand claps. And what will he miss about his lady? The lovemaking "on the stairs/ against the pole/On the north side of the..." SEX!
I love IT!

Get on The Boat- An instant grabber. This is kick-ass James Brown, far better than lesser efforts such as "The Work". And with a deep-throated "Good God!" from our man, how could it not be?
The chorus and the bridge are catchy. Sheila E's percussion is prominent and deep in the mix. Maceo gets a call to arms at 2:30! It makes a brief trip into latin-jazz, then comes back around.
A keeper in the Prince does JB genre.

And so, 3121 is a solid effort that gets better...much better...as it goes. The best stuff here is far more lively than anything on Musiclolgy, and long time fans will not be dissapointed with most of this material.
Final score: 3.5 out of 5.

Well, I think this album contains some real classic sutff!!

"3121" is a real strong opener and one of the best (if not the best) song of the album, "Lolita" is built up as a kind of old fashion pop song but it sounds so fresh!, "Love" is definitely Prince vintage to me, so is "The Word" and "The Dance". "Get on the Boat" is classic good ol'funk much reminiscent to "In A Large Room With no lights" methinks.

I really like the vocal delivery of "Te Amo Corazon" and "The Word" as well as the Arabian vibe towards the end of the latter.

Me like Black Sweat also, even if I find the song too short!!

"Beautiful, Loved and Blessed" is quite nice, in fact I really dig it for what it is: a kind R'n'B song with a funkay ending!!

I only skip "Incense and Candles", not that I dislike it but somewhere it doesn't fit my format (I especially don't like the "rap" part). "Satisfied" is nice but I wouldn't have put it on tha album.

I hope the next album will sound more coherent. This one is varied prolly because it is intended to be a commercial success and also to show the various aspects of Prince's new HQ "3121"!! Party time!!

I sequenced the songs in a different order (without "Incense..." and "Satisified" and Black Sweat being right after "Love") and well we got a real funky new album being classic Prince (= princely vibe with a fresh sound)...

I definitely like this one!!!

Not that we need one, but here's my review all the same: lol

3121 - Feels more like a groove, an intro, than a full-fledged song. Has a little head-bobbing effect and a bit of idiosyncracy about it (quirky guitar, voices), which sets it apart from some of the other tracks. Had potential for being something a little better, but all in all it's alright. Could've done without those synth horns. Doesn't quite satisfy.

Lolita - Goes straight in with a keyboard riff that reminds me of 'IWBYL', but the actual keyboard sound could've been better. It's straight up fun pop, kinda catchy but ultimately not my thing. A little too fluffy and Emancipation-eque. Wouldn't have made my 1 disc CDR of that 3 disc album.

Te Amo Corazon - Sweet track, beautiful production and instrumentation, but doesn't conjure up any more exciting adjectives than 'nice' or 'pleasant'. I wouldn't skip it, I'd enjoy it, but it could pass me right by if I weren't sitting there specifically to listen to it.

Black Sweat - Sparse, electronic funk track that is too short and for me never really hits stride. Another that doesn't quite satisfy. Some funky rhythm guitar would've improved it in IMHO, but even with that addition wouldn't feel like a good song.

Incense and Candles - Sexy, without a doubt, with some nice touches, but again just not that good a song. Production is good, some nice sounds and a smoothness to it that in this case I don't think detracts, but in conclusion only an average track.

Love - A kinda funky track which combines electronic elements with some nice rhythm guitar licks. The hook is nice, but the verses are pretty poor. The ending is where the track gets funkiest the more the guitar is prominent.

Satisfied - As many have said, very similar to 'On The Couch' but lacking something interesting like the vocal horns on the aforementioned track. Nice instrumentation, pleasing loose feel to the structure and playing, but passes by without really registering. Pleasant enough, but hardly taxing for ol' boy. He could write 3 of these a day and I'm beginning to think perhaps he does.

Fury - As suspected, and often feared, disappoints compared to the SNL performance. Sounds pretty soft, keyboards too prominent, guitar not prominent enough, vocals just so-so and a little quiet in the mix. Even the scream towards the end has a perfunctory feel about it. A cool song that I do quite like, but having seen the SNL performance it's hard not to feel a little disappointed. Knew it was coming though, unfortunately.

The Word - Acoustic guitar is a nice touch and there's quite a nice feel about this track. Lyrics aren't the best, but it's not a big issue. An enjoyable track without being that catchy or interesting. The usual nice touches here and there, some cool guitar work and a good vibe about it, but certainly not a great song.

Beautiful, Loved and Blessed - A decent pop Rnb track, some nice vocals from both Tamar and Prince. Good structure and quite catchy and a funky coda at the conclusion. All in all quite a well put together track with decent instrumentation. Quite good, will probably work well on Tamar's album. Doesn't break any molds but is a pleasant listen.

The Dance - Greatly improves on the other version. Has a nice mood about it and some subtly emotive singing. Piano work is good and fits well. I think this is one of the stronger tracks on the album. It feels more fully thought out. Again, it doesn't really jump out at you but there is some beauty in the subtlety. Ends with passionate pleading, emotion that is very welcome and sadly missing from much of the rest of the album.

Get On The Boat - Fun and funky with some nice solos in there. A very weak hook though, and verses almost identical in rhythmic delivery to 'Pretty Man'. The backbone to the song is chugging and funky though and the overall effect is a nice groove. Could've been a little grittier, but the playing is pretty tight. Not bad.

So, hardly the most positive review on here. In fact, I've not been exclusively positive about a single track on the album. The problem for me is that while it's quite consistent and I wouldn't have a problem with putting the disc in and letting it play all the way through, there's nothing really great on here. A few nice tracks, some cool music, a handful of good ideas, some wasted opportunities, some pretty weak songwriting, some questionable choices of instrumentation and production, and an overall pleasantness that ends up disappointing more than enthusing due to the man's obvious talent and our expectations of what should be capable of.

2.5/3 out of 5.

Finally a fair critic of this album, i d even drop it to a 2 out of 5.

I am all confused...to me 3121 is just plain lame. Really truly super weak album. I don't get it, I have been a fan for YEARS...was in the audience of the Sign'Othe times at the Zenith in Paris...And this album is just yuk.

A mix of video game rythmics, Cher'ized vocals, cheap lyrics, predictable grooves, annoying keybords and samplers...

3121 better than musicology?/?/?/?/?

Show me which tune is better than Dr Mr Man or Call my name, ICPC or Marrying kind, etc etc

ok, granted that I went a little heavy on the all the ones who do appriciate the album, but I think that the Prince fans "tolerate" more and more the microwaved crap Prince remixes and burns on the CDs.

If this album came out after SOTT or PR or UTCM or even diamonds and pearls etc we would have FLIPPED!

If it is true that Prince and his crew reads our posts...We should let him know that he is becoming a Mini Prince...

Seriously, let's say the tunes are "OK", but sheesh even the mixing, production etc makes EVERY tune a diluted, fat free song.

Sounds like he rushed to slam them songs while the painter and plumber were fixing up his new crib!

Let's ALL agree that Pince is not half the great song writer he once was, that his "flame" that once was blazing, is just a candle light on a short wick.

But darned, can he at LEAST produce his albums decently? Whatever happened the the Studio Whiz??

Truth is I think this is one of those albums you have to hear at a concert to really warm up to. It's a nicely produced album but it is VERY commercial.Do I think he is trying too hard? Maybe so. Kinda like Madonna tries too hard these days.(Okay I thought she has always tried too hard.) And I must also say that I love the care that promisekept took on the post. I agree with totally with that statement.

ok, granted that I went a little heavy on the all the ones who do appriciate the album, but I think that the Prince fans "tolerate" more and more the microwaved crap Prince remixes and burns on the CDs.

Not sure why the major differences of opinion. I must say though that I like this album better than Parade or UTCM, certainly D&P, after 30 listens. I think that is the key. I was luke warm at first to almost all the tracks - now I would not dare skip one. It really does require a bunch of listens - if you don't like it after that, then well, you have no taste.

lol - Just kidding.

I wanted to post reviews from Icelandic newspapers about 3121 but there haven't been any yet, which is understandable considering the album isn't in stores here yet (crappy Icelandic wreckastows mad ) However I found two mentions on the Icelandic website Rjóminn (The Cream), which is a music website with reviews and music news, kind of like Pitchfork in the US, except The Cream is a bit more mainstream. I found two articles about upcoming albums, one about possible top 10 best albums of 2006 and another about top 10 "mainstream" albums to look out for in the future. Here are the bits about Prince, translated for your viewing pleasure smile

(Probably) The Best Albums of 2006:

10. Prince
I believe this will be Prince's comeback year. He will release something great on March 21. Later this year we'll all be convinced that "1984" (I'm guessing he means "1999" lol) and "Purple Rain" aren't heard enough while we wonder, with a carefree tone in our voices, why the Prince album of 2006, 3121, wasn't released long ago. OK, this may not be very likely but I can always hope.

Promising upcoming albums for the mainstream crowd:

8. Prince: 3121
What will Prince do now? It will be exciting to see. A landmark album or what? Our questions will hopefully be answered this summer.
